Then the White Rabbit saw Alice.
“What are you doing here, Mary Ann ” he asked. Go home immediately and bring me a fan and a pair of white gloves.
Alice was too afraid to tell him she was not Mary Ann, a servant. So she ran off.
“I’ll try and find his fan and gloves,” she thought as she ran.
She soon came to a little house. There was a name on the door, “W. Rabbit.”
She went inside without knocking on the door. “How strange this all is!” she thought. “I am running errands for a rabbit. Perhaps Dinah will ask me to run errands for her.”
She ran up the stairs into a little bedroom, and to her joy, there she found a pair of gloves and a fan. She picked them up and was going to leave the room when she saw a bottle. It was near a looking glass. On the side of the bottle were the words “Drink me.”
“I’ll drink some,” Alice thought with excitement. “Perhaps it will make me grow again. I’m tired of being so small.”
She quickly drank half the bottle. Before she could get out of the little house, she started to grow. Surprisingly, she was so big. Soon, she could not move in the room.

Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away in Wuhan at the age of 99 on February 6th.
Born in Guangdong in 1926, Huang studied shipbuilding at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1949, just after graduation, he began his lifelong career in China’s shipbuilding industry.
In 1958, Huang was secretly called to Beijing to join the research team tasked with designing China’s first nuclear-powered submarine.
At that time, China didn’t have the basic conditions to develop nuclear submarines. None of the researchers had any knowledge in that field. What was even worse, other countries kept their technologies so secret that they hardly shared any technical information.
So Huang and other researchers started by searching newspapers and magazines for information. After carefully analyzing that information and studying two US submarine models, they finally came up with five plans.
The team members didn’t have computers, so they used abacuses (算盘) to solve problems. To make sure the results were correct, they were divided into three groups to do the math at the same time. If the results were different, they would start over again.
In the years that followed, Huang and several other top engineers lead the research. In 1970, they develop the first Type 091, making China the fifth nation to have nuclear submarines. Huang’s name remained secret until 1987, when a magazine in Shanghai was allowed to publish a report revealing only his family name.
Even in his 90s, Huang visited his office every weekday to review and organize materials. He also provided advice for young researchers on solving technical problems. Due to his great contributions, Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honour, in 2019.

Many of us have considered adding some plants or trees to our homes to make the place look just a little bit prettier. So, what about a bonsai
According to gardening expert Jessica Damiano, growing a bonsai is more than just caring for a small tree—it’s an art and a way to develop patience.
Growing a bonsai might seem challenging at first. However, once you learn the basics, you can grow one-as long as you have some patience and pay attention to detail.
When choosing a tree, you need to consider both your weather and experience level. Different trees grow better in different temperatures and locations. After bringing your bonsai home, place it somewhere that meets its sunlight and temperature needs.
Growing a young bonsai takes time. Regularly check the tree and plan your next cut.
Growers often train branches to grow into wanted shapes by wrapping them first with protective material, and then with bonsai wire. This must be done carefully so as not to damage them. Moreover, the wrappings should be regularly loosened (松散) to protect the branches from damage as they grow bigger.
Check whether the soil is dry daily by putting your finger into the top two centimetres. When the soil feels dry at that depth, you need to water it slowly until the water comes out from the hole in the bottom of the pot. In general, your bonsai should be fertilized (施肥) from spring through fall. Different types and ages require different care-be sure to study the specific needs of your bonsai.
Here’s where the patience comes: the beauty of bonsai lies not in the final product but in the journey. The tree, which can live for years or even centuries, will change over time, as will you. And by putting your personal touches on every branch, you will mark your bonsai with your own style.
37. What does Jessica Damiano think of growing a bonsai
A. It is a simple task for everyone. B. It takes plenty of time and energy.
C. It is about taking care of a small tree. D. It is an art and a way to develop patience.
38. What does paragraph 6 mainly talk about
A. The tips for placing a bonsai. B. The importance of choosing a bonsai.
C. The process of shaping bonsai branches. D. The ways to water and fertilize a bonsai.
39. Which opinion does the writer probably agree with
A. Bonsai care changes by its type and size. B. The beauty of a bonsai depends on its final shape.
C. Growers should follow strict rules to grow bonsai D. The grower’s personality influences the bonsai’s style.
40. What’s the best title for the passage
A. A World of Arts B. Bring Beauty to Life C. More than a Tree D. Enjoy Power of Nature

例文
Dear Mr. John,
I’m Li Hua. I’m happy to show my plan for Field Trips.
I suggest visiting the local history museum and an ancient village. First, the museum displays old photos and traditional tools, helping exchange students understand our local history and customs. Then, visiting the ancient village allows them to experience folk life, like trying traditional farming and tasting local snacks. They can also learn to make handicrafts from villagers, such as paper-cutting.
Field trips combine learning with fun. They provide real-life experiences, which are more impressive than classes. This plan can broaden their horizons and deep their love for China.
Hope you’ll like my plan.
Yours,
Li Hua
