The relative humidity (湿度) of the air affects how comfortable we feel. Humidity is the amount of water in the air. ①_________. If you are standing in the bathroom after a hot shower and can see the steam hanging in the air, or if you are outside after a heavy rain, then you are in an area of high humidity.
Air contains a certain amount of water vapor (蒸汽). The amount of water vapor depends on the temperature of that air. ②_________ A low relative humidity means that the air is dry and could hold a lot more wet at that temperature.
If the temperature is 25℃ and a cubic (立方的) meter of air contains 22 grams of water, then the relative humidity is 100 percent. If it contains 11 grams of water, the relative humidity is 50percent.
③_________. If the relative humidity is 100 percent, it means that water will not go into the air. Our bodies rely on the evaporation from our skin for cooling. The lower the relative humidity, the easier it is for water to evaporate from our skin and the cooler we feel.
If the relative humidity is 100 percent, we feel much hotter than the actual temperature indicates because our sweat does not evaporate at all. ④_________, we feel cooler than the actual temperature because our sweat evaporates easily. We can also feel extremely dry.

New research suggests links between ultra-processed (超加工) foods — such as chips, many cereals and most packaged snacks at the grocery store — and changes in the way we learn, remember and feel.
Many ultra-processed foods hit the brain rapidly when we eat them and have a strong effect on its reward system, which is involved in pleasure, motivation and learning.
Those effects are similar to ones when people use nicotine, alcohol and other addictive drugs, said Ashley Gearhardt, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan.
“People have a very strong desire for ultra-processed foods and eat them compulsively and find they can’t stop eating them,” she said.
The combination of high levels of both fat and carbs (碳水化合物) in many ultra-processed foods is likely why we are addicted to them. Foods in nature are often high in fat or carbs, but not both. Bananas are naturally high in sugar but you eat one and you’re good.
Scientists were surprised to find that people who had been eating a high-fat, high-sugar snack also had changes in how their brains learned.
In a study, four days of having a breakfast high in saturated (饱和的) fat and added sugar was linked to reductions in performance on some learning and memory tests, according to researchers in Australia. People who had a healthier breakfast didn’t have the performance changes.
11.What will probably happen if we eat too many ultra-processed foods
A. Our brains may be hit rapidly and we may get ill.
B. We can never quit ultra-processed foods once we are addicted to it.
C. We may find it difficult to keep English words and phrases in mind.
D. We may become addicted to nicotine, alcohol and other addictive drugs.

A. Foods high in fat or carbs are really addictive.
B. The intake of ultra-processed foods has a negative effect on learning.
C. People who have a healthier breakfast can perform better in a memory test.
D. Drinking alcohol, though has a similar effect as eating chips, does less harm to our brains.
14.How does the writer develop the last paragraph
A. Giving examples. B. Listing figures.
C. Making comparisons. D. Explaining cause and effect.

The Australian sand octopus (章鱼) was discovered in 1990 and is the only octopus species known to bury itself deep in the sand to hide from enemies. A team of researchers are studying the venom (毒液) of this kind of octopus. They have discovered that the venom may greatly slow cancer growth. And it can also help fight drug resistance in patients with a BRAF-changed skin cancer. BRAF is involved in managing cell growth. A change in it results in abnormal cell growth. These BRAF changes are seen in half of all cases of skin cancers.
“We and other groups have previously discovered that other animals-snakes, spiders, bees-have anticancer properties,” said Dr. Maria, the study’s lead author. “However, in my current knowledge, the anticancer properties of an octopus species have never been studied or confirmed before.”
Current treatments face a few challenges including low response rates, poisoning and side effects, as well as drug resistance. The octopus venom slows the growth of BRAF-changed skin cancer. More importantly, it is safe to be used in large quantities — it is not poisonous. Therefore, in combination with other drugs, the treatments could potentially achieve better and safer patient outcomes.
It is very unlikely that the octopus has specifically developed its venom to contain an anticancer substance. According to the researching team, the octopus venom contains over 1,000 unique substances with several functions such as reducing pain and anticancer.
“In this study, we have shown that the octopus venom specifically targets BRAF-changed skin cancer. The next step is to examine whether similar promising results are applicable for other BRAF-changed cancers.” said Dr. Maria. “Before it can be used on patients, the team will need to perform several rounds of lab testing and clinical trials to understand how it works and its full potential as a drug against skin cancer.”
11.What can we know about BRAF
A. It is a change in cells. B. It controls cell growth.
C. It can cause a deadly illness. D. It helps to cure a skin cancer.
12.What discovery did the team make
A. A medicine to cure cancers. B. A substance contained in animals.
C. The medical value of octopus species. D. The anticancer effect of an octopus venom.
13.What is an advantage of the octopus venom to treat the skin cancer
A. It is of large quantity. B. It has no side effects.
C. It is less expensive. D. It has lower risks.
14.What can we infer from the last paragraph concerning the octopus venom
A. Its application requires further work.
B. It helps treat BRAF-changed cancers.
C. Its safety needs more clinical testings.
D. It has already been put into wide use.
For years, research has linked sitting too much with numerous health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Researchers have found that walking for five minutes every 30 minutes is the most effective way to reduce the harm of too much sitting. Want to spend less time sitting before your screens and more time on your feet in 2025 ①_________ Here are the top five tips.
Make a movement plan. ②_________ Make sure it’s a reasonable goal and try to push yourself. Five minutes every 30 minutes is best, but if you can’t, change that aim for every hour or two hours.
Get someone to join you. Having a partner can make taking movement feel less discouraging. Think: co-workers taking quick walks or friends encouraging each other through text! Long distance friends, husband, kids, co-workers, neighbors — anyone can be your companion! ③_________
Keep going but take it slow. It’s tempting to get all your movement done first thing in the morning, but studies have shown that one longer workout doesn’t reduce the harm of long sitting. ④_________ Besides, walking slowly is enough to get the physical and mental benefits of movement.
⑤_________ Your 5-minute walks don’t have to all be walking. You can turn your movement breaks into dance breaks! Or you can get housework done, like taking out the garbage cans.
Get creative! If standing isn’t a choice, chair-based exercises are great too.
Track your progress. Counting your movement encourages you to keep going and helps you be mindful of how your body is feeling throughout the day.
A. Mix up your movement.
B. Add regular breaks to your movement.
C. What can help you stick to your movement
D. Send them an invitation and take the challenge together.
E. But missing some movement is not the end of the world.
F. What amount of movement will you build into your day

关系代词 which, who, whom, whose, as
关系副词when, where等
The old bridge, which was built in 1950, is still in use.

They moved to Sanya, where the winter is warm.
2. as的用法
. .as, the same . . . as中。
I never read such books as he recommends.
He failed the exam again, as his parents had expected.
As the teacher said, practice makes perfect.
as is known to us 众所周知
as is reported 正如所提及的那样
as we all know 众所周知
as has been said before 正如之前所说
He bought a new laptop, which cost him over 10,000 yuan.

This is the book that changed my life.
I bought a novel yesterday, which is written by a famous author.

He plays the piano every day, which improves his skills.

His brother, who is 19 years old, is serving in the army now.
He is the man who lives next to me.
He is a warm-hearted man, who lives next to me.
Ms. Liu, whom we interviewed last week, will join our team.

Thomas Dambo, an environmental artist in Denmark, thinks big. In 2010, he started his first large-scale project: building birdhouses. He and his crew ended up creating 4,000 of them. Now he makes giant trolls (巨怪). So far, 59 trolls can be found at locations all around the world.
His creations are made entirely from items people have thrown away, such as discarded wooden pallets, old fencing, and broken sheds. It’s important to him that he doesn’t add to the growing landfills (垃圾填埋场) on our planet. He thinks of discarded items as art supplies and a source of inspiration.
As a kid, Thomas wanted to build all sorts of things, from a skateboard ramp (坡道) to a tree house in his backyard. He had lots of energy and creativity. The problem was that a kid doesn’t have the money to purchase supplies. He started to bike around the neighborhood looking for discarded wood, rope, and other items to create things.
In 7th grade, a girl in his class gave him a good piece of advice. She told him that he should take a different route each day to experience something new. Thomas took her idea and learned all about his city of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Today, Thomas still uses this idea of taking different routes as he searches for trash left out on curbs. Items such as wire, ropes, wooden pallets, metal, old chair rollers, and plastic containers are just waiting for him to think of a way to use them. If the items are small, he uses “Tingfinder,” his bicycle with a cart attached, to take home his “treasures”. He uses a truck for the larger items.
“My advice is to think about what you really love to do and let that guide you. Keep moving in the direction you’d like to go.” said Thomas.
11.Why does Thomas prefer to use discarded items for his art
A. They are cheaper than new materials. B. They are more useful and attractive.
C. He wants to reduce waste. D. He can find them more easily.
12.What advice did a girl in Thomas’s class give

B. Explore new paths to discover something fresh.

故选A。
②根据本空后的“Some shipments made it through to Europe and to northern and eastern Africa, through the port of Alexandria.”
④根据本空后的“Merchants carried shipments from major center, and then others carried the foods farther on the route.”
⑤根据本空前的“Local taxes placed on goods traveling along the route were quite common.可知,对丝绸之路上运输的货物征收地方税是很常见的,此处说的是征收地方税的影响,故F项(因此,由于成本高,许多货物只能走一部分路)符合语境。故选F。(8)Unit 4 Space Exploration——高一英语人教版(2019)暑假作业

二、阅读理解
Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle through, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2022 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand the companionship of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone attains a state of satisfaction.
Nevertheless, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1 – 2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat that you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.”
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.

Some people are a force of nature. Riverhead’s Ted Strickroth was a force of helping benefit nature.
Through his nonprofit, Wilderness Traveling Museum, he educated children at schools and events, teaching them the ways of Native Americans. “I try to teach kids that these people were the best recyclers,” he said in 2017. “We recycle bottles and cans, but the natives just did it a little differently.”
Strickroth, “taught thousands of people,” said his longtime friend Joe Colao. “He would go to a school district that would hire him to do a program to teach Native American culture, and there would be teachers and principals that would say, ‘Ted, I remember you from when I was in fourth grade.’”
Recalled another friend, Renato Stafford, “He would have summer camps, where he would teach kids survival skills and Native American culture,” including painting, fire-making and bow-and-arrow use. “He just gave to everybody selflessly,” Stafford added. “When a storm hit this area, my family and I were without power at our house. Ted rolled up and he had got a generator ready. Anything you needed, there was never a ‘let me see what I can do.’ It was always yes, and then he figured out how to make it happen.”
Indeed, when he was in the army, his commanding officer said he was “highly respected by both his superiors and co-workers” and praised “his ability to quickly grasp a technical situation and solve the problem.”
Unfortunately, he was diagnosed in the early 2010s with a rare cancer that can develop in any part of the body, and he was advised by doctors to have his right arm amputated (截肢). “But he was a person who makes woodwork by hand,” said another friend, Helen, “and he did his programs for the schools, so he wanted to keep his arm as long as possible, and was willing to accept the fact the cancer could spread.”

China has set new rules limiting the amount of time children can spend playing online games. The rules limit children to just three hours of online game playing a week. That is one hour between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday most weeks.
Li Zhanguo has two children aged 4 and 8. Even though they do not have smartphones, they enjoy playing online games. Like many other parents. Li is happy with new government rules. But experts say it is unclear if such policies can help prevent addiction to online games. Children might just get addicted to social media instead. In the end, experts say, parents should be the ones to set limits and support good practice.
There has been a growing concern in China about gaming addiction among children. Government reports in 2018 found that about one in ten Chinese children were addicted to the Internet. The new rules are part of an effort to prevent young people from spending too much time on unhealthy entertainment. That includes what officials call the “irrational fan culture”.
Under the new rules, the responsibility for making sure children play only three hours a day falls largely on Chinese gaming companies like Net Ease and Ten panies have set up real-name registration systems to prevent young users from going past game time limits. They have used facial recognition technology to check their identities. And they have also set up a program that permits people to report what is against the law. It is unclear what punishments gaming companies may face if they do not carry out the policies. And even if such policies are performed, it is also unclear whether they can prevent online addiction.
A specialist treating Internet addiction expects about 20 percent of children will find ways to break the rules by borrowing accounts of their older relatives and find a way around facial recognition. In his opinion, short-video alps such as Douyin and Kuaishou are also very popular in China. They are not under the same restrictions as games.

D. Between 10 p. m. and 11 p.m. On Thursday.

B. companies are more responsible for kids’ obeying the rules
C. the new rules will help prevent children playing online games
D. parents play a greater part in limiting the time of online games
13.What will children probably do to battle with the new rules
A. Design an advanced program. B. Use facial recognition systems.

In the world of crime-solving, forensic sketching has emerged as a powerful tool in identifying and capturing criminals. This technique, which involves creating a visual representation of a suspect based on eyewitness descriptions, has been used in solving numerous cases. The process is both an art and a science, requiring not only artistic skills but also a deep understanding of human psychology and memory.
Forensic sketching is not a new concept. It has been used for decades, but recent advancements in technology and psychology have significantly improved its accuracy and effectiveness. Today, forensic artists work closely with law enforcement agencies, using detailed interviews and advanced software to create sketches that can be distributed to the public and used in investigations. One of the most fascinating aspects of forensic sketching is its reliance on the human memory. Eyewitnesses play a crucial role in this process, as their descriptions form the basis of the sketch. However, human memory is not always reliable. Factors such as pressure, injuries, and the passage of time can affect a person’s recollection of events and faces. This is where the skill of the forensic artist comes into play. They must navigate these challenges, asking the right questions and interpreting the descriptions to create a likeness that can lead to the identification of a suspect.
The process begins with a detailed interview. The forensic artist asks the eyewitness to describe the suspect’s facial features, using a database of facial features to help the witness refine their description. Once the initial sketch is completed, it is reviewed and revised based on further feedback from the witness.
Despite its challenges, forensic sketching remains a valuable tool in the fight against crime. It bridges the gap between art and science, combining creativity with precise attention to detail. As technology continues to evolve, the future of forensic sketching looks promising, with the potential for even greater accuracy and efficiency in solving crimes.

Steps to Improve Your Humour
If you want to know how to get funnier in your personal and business life, here are the exact lines, methods, and practical strategies.
Give the opposite answer to yes/no questions.
The easiest way to be funny, even if you are not, is to give the opposite answer to yes/no questions. Yes, it is that simple. The more obvious, the better. ①________ So they laugh. Then you can move on to your real story.
Use a character switch.
When we tell a story, there are usually multiple characters. More often than not, people will make assumptions about them. For example, Little Red Riding Hood is the vulnerable (易受伤害的) one, and the Big Bad Wolf is the dangerous one. But what if you switch personas around and the Big Bad Wolf suddenly is vulnerable ②________
Play with numbers.
One way to be surprising is to play with numbers.③________ Why Because numbers are specific. To be surprising, all you have to do is build up people’s expectation to be the opposite of what that number suggests.
Use real-life stories, not jokes.
④________ A joke is a fake story that sets up for a punchline (笑点). If the punchline falls flat, you end up looking like a fool. Rather than tell jokes, funny people tell relevant stories that have humorous elements.
⑤________
When you have a funny idea or joke, it’s hard not to share it right away. But the best-placed pun (俏皮话) is actually at the end. Put the funny part at the end of the sentence. That way, you’re not still talking when the audience is meant to be laughing. This also makes your timing look awesome.
A. You don’t have to tell a new joke.
B. Delay (拖延) the funny.
C. If you have a funny thought, record it as an audio note.
D. Numbers are your best friend when it comes to being funny.
E. Actually, jokes are harder to tell in real life than stories.
F. That’s when people’s assumptions are overturned and things become really funny.
G. The moment you give the opposite answer, you have surprised your audience.

In a breathtaking incident in Berlin a young man narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation where he became trapped beneath a bus.
The 16-year-old found himself unable to move beneath a tyre (轮胎) of the bus when he fell down during an attempt to catch the departing vehicle at a local stop on a Monday afternoon. The quick response of the bus driver, who immediately stopped the vehicle, coupled with the assistance of roughly 40 people, including both passengers and bystanders, led to a remarkable achievement. Frank Kurze one of the courageous volunteers who participated in the rescue, recalled the messy scene, stating, “I saw the men trying to lift the bus, and it was clear to me that I also had to help lift the bus and try to pull the young man from underneath.”
Nearby medical professionals from a healthcare center in the Spandau neighborhood of Berlin instantly arrived at the scene to provide vital first aid. Michelle Rueckborn, one of the nurses on duty, shared their response, saying, “We were at work when we heard screams, and our coworker looked out of the window and saw what had happened, and said ‘Grab the doctor’s kit and run.’”
