(2025·辽宁省点石联考高三月考)We live in an important time for language revitalization (复兴). More than half the world's languages are in danger of being swallowed by dominant languages within this century. That's why the United Nations declared 2022-2032 the International Decade of Indigenous (本土的) Languages.
But turning the trend of language extinction is no easy task. We know that to keep languages alive, we have to create an immersive environment. A good example of the immersion method is “language nests”, where little kids and other beginners learn from fluent elders on a regular basis. One of the first language nests was started in New Zealand in 1982 by Maori elders who worried that their language, culture, and even pride were disappearing. The elders decided to teach children their native tongue through culturally relevant song and play.
The language nest model was so successful that it migrated to Hawaii and then throughout the world. Language nests are typically physical spaces but can also be found online.
While immersion programs can have excellent outcomes, they require significant funding and resources to remain sustainable over time. The lack of capacity makes it hard: not enough content, training, and teachers. People don't realize the cost of revitalizing languages and what it would cost to run entire educational systems in these languages. To establish the institutions, to train the people, and to make sure the proper techniques are in place to write and read in the languages are huge challenges.
Areas where one indigenous language has the most influence—such as Maori or Hawaiian may have an advantage because they begin with a fairly large speaker base and can focus funding, teacher training, and resources on that language. But countries with a high level of language diversity face a serious challenge. However, whatever it takes, it's worthwhile for communities to preserve their ancestral tongues for generations to come.

I survived a snowstorm
A snowstorm was supposed to hit on the evening of Monday, Jan. 31. On the way to his place, I picked up a new cellphone charger, filled up my SUV with gas and picked up two stuffed crust pizzas because I'd promised my 15 year old daughter and 10 year old son I'd bring some pizzas home for dinner. As a single mother, I worked hard and did my utmost to take good care of my two kids though it was not easy.
It took me about 15 minutes to get to Jack's house, where I dropped off his laptop bag and got right back on the road. Then the snow started—and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The storm was a “snownado”, or what the TV meteorologists called a Saskatchewan screamer, because it came in fast and so windy that it screamed.
The snowstorm grew stronger and stronger, forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow, so I rolled down my driver's side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But really, I didn't have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. At one point, I didn't know exactly where I was going. I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer's field, a ditch or worse. I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911. The policeman who received the call sadly advised me to try other ways for rescue as he was the only one on the duty.

(2025·辽宁省点石联考高三月考)We live in an important time for language revitalization (复兴). More than half the world's languages are in danger of being swallowed by dominant languages within this century. That's why the United Nations declared 2022-2032 the International Decade of Indigenous (本土的) Languages.
But turning the trend of language extinction is no easy task. We know that to keep languages alive, we have to create an immersive environment. A good example of the immersion method is “language nests”, where little kids and other beginners learn from fluent elders on a regular basis. One of the first language nests was started in New Zealand in 1982 by Maori elders who worried that their language, culture, and even pride were disappearing. The elders decided to teach children their native tongue through culturally relevant song and play.
The language nest model was so successful that it migrated to Hawaii and then throughout the world. Language nests are typically physical spaces but can also be found online.
While immersion programs can have excellent outcomes, they require significant funding and resources to remain sustainable over time. The lack of capacity makes it hard: not enough content, training, and teachers. People don't realize the cost of revitalizing languages and what it would cost to run entire educational systems in these languages. To establish the institutions, to train the people, and to make sure the proper techniques are in place to write and read in the languages are huge challenges.
Areas where one indigenous language has the most influence—such as Maori or Hawaiian may have an advantage because they begin with a fairly large speaker base and can focus funding, teacher training, and resources on that language. But countries with a high level of language diversity face a serious challenge. However, whatever it takes, it's worthwhile for communities to preserve their ancestral tongues for generations to come.

I survived a snowstorm
A snowstorm was supposed to hit on the evening of Monday, Jan. 31. I was working from home, but I had to leave that afternoon and go to my office at First Nations University in Regina, Saskatchewan, so I could sign an emergency financial aid check for a student. As director of finance, I wanted to get it to him as soon as possible, snowstorm or not. Besides, I wasn't worried. I figured I had more than enough time to make it to the office and get back home.
The route to the university took about 30 minutes along the Trans Canada Highway. When I got there, my colleague Jack came to my office to co sign the check, then he left for the day. As I was packing up, I noticed Jack had left his laptop bag in my office.
“Shoot,” Jack said when I called him. “I'm already home.”
“I can bring it to you,” I assured him. It was just past 4:30 pm. The snow wasn't supposed to start until later, but just to be safe, I decided to take the country roads to his home instead of the highway. On the way to his place, I picked up a new cellphone charger, filled up my SUV with gas and picked up two stuffed crust pizzas because I'd promised my 15 year old daughter and 10 year old son I'd bring some pizzas home for dinner. As a single mother, I worked hard and did my utmost to take good care of my two kids though it was not easy.
It took me about 15 minutes to get to Jack's house, where I dropped off his laptop bag and got right back on the road. Then the snow started—and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The storm was a “snownado”, or what the TV meteorologists called a Saskatchewan screamer, because it came in fast and so windy that it screamed.
The snowstorm grew stronger and stronger, forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow, so I rolled down my driver's side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But really, I didn't have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. At one point, I didn't know exactly where I was going. I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer's field, a ditch or worse. I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911. The policeman who received the call sadly advised me to try other ways for rescue as he was the only one on the duty.

We spent the night chatting freely, sharing food and waiting out the tempest cozily until the highway resumed. A week later, I took my children to visit Jack's house, and our two families became the best friends from then on.
