Recently, I chatted with a friend who was very angry at a particular person in her life. “She texted me!” my friend said angrily. “And wouldn’t answer the phone!” I didn’t think the behaviour sounded too bad, but I didn’t comment. In the past, I’d have suggested that my friend was overreacting, or offered a different point of view. But I’ve found a new technique that works wonders and helps to keep everybody happy and calm. “Yes, and ”
I first learnt about “Yes, and” in 2014 on an episode of the podcast This American Life. A married couple, Karen and Mondy, were caring for Karen’s mum, Virginia, who had Alzheimer’s. Instead of correcting Virginia when she became confused, they went along with her reality, using an improvisation principle called “yes, and”. Karen and Mondy used “yes, and” with Virginia to ease her distress and allow her to feel recognized and safe. “It’s exhausting trying to repeatedly correct someone, and when that person has Alzheimer’s, it’s pretty pointless.”
When my teenage daughter is tired and complains about a “lame” teacher, she isn’t interested in my view; she just wants to be heard. When my friend is having problems with her husband. she doesn’t want to hear that he’s probably doing his best; she wants me to listen and agree with her. When a stranger on the Internet tells me I’m foolish, he’s unlikely to be persuaded otherwise, so I’d be wasting my time trying to engage. So I cheerfully “yes, and” them all.
It makes the interactions so much smoother. It makes my life so much easier! No longer do I try to drag other people into my reality; instead, I accept and enter theirs.
4. Which of the following may be helpful when the writer chatted with the angry friend
A. Saying something with anger.
B. Telling the friend that he/she was overreacting.
C. Showing a different perspective.
D. Saying “yes, and ”.
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. Karen had Alzheimer’s.
B. The couple listened to what Virginia said patiently.
C. The “yes, and” method made Virginia confused.
D. It’s easy to correct someone with Alzheimer’s.
6. What does the word “theirs” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Their interaction. B. Their life. C. Their reality. D. Their answer.
7. By writing the text, the writer wants to show _______ .
A. saying “yes, and” makes life easier
B. how hard it is to change people’s ideas
C. people tend to speak ill of others nowadays
D. how important it is to treat others gently
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. A

Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to help people struggling to follow conversations in noisy environments by solving the “cocktail party problem”. This term describes the challenge of focusing on one voice while filtering out (过滤) background noise, like chatter at a crowded party. For years, scientists have been puzzled by how the human brain is able to do this, and Tech Crunch even described it as “one of the greatest barriers to voice technologies reaching a level of understanding comparable to humans.”
Voice technologies are becoming increasingly important, with a market expected to reach $26.8 billion by next year. However, these technologies still struggle to deal with real-life challenges, particularly the ambient noises that influence sound signals. The only way to make voice technology as good as the human auditory (听觉的) system is to solve the cocktail party problem.
This issue is becoming more common, particularly for younger people. According to a survey, 11.5% of Generation Z reported having difficulty hearing conversations in noisy places, compared to only 8% of people aged 25 to 34 and 7.4% of those over 55. Experts believe that increased use of headphones among younger people may be the main reason for this difference. Aside from social situations, the cocktail party problem also affects legal matters. If background noise makes it hard to hear voices in audio evidence, it can impact the clarity of legal cases.
Keith McElveen, an electrical engineer at Wave Sciences, was inspired to solve this problem. He discovered that isolating a single voice from multiple sounds was a huge challenge. After ten years of testing, they succeeded in creating a system that functions similarly to how a camera focuses on a subject while blurring out (模糊处理) the background.
This breakthrough has already been used in U.S. court cases, tuning unclear recordings into critical evidence. In the future, it could also be used in everyday devices like smart speakers and hearing aids to help people better hear in noisy environments.
8. What does the “cocktail party problem” most likely refer to
A. The difficulty of focusing in a noisy environment.
B. The problem of hearing loss caused by loud music.
C. The issue of understanding multiple languages at once.
D. The challenge of organizing a successful cocktail party.
9. What does the underlined word “ambient” mean in paragraph 2
A. Low. B. Artificial. C. Faraway. D. Surrounding.
10. What can be inferred about the impact of the “cocktail party problem” on legal matters
A. It has little effect on legal cases.
B. It can make audio evidence unheard.
C. It has been solved through efforts.
D. It affects younger people in legal settings.
11. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The cocktail party problem is minor.
B. AI has defeated the cocktail party challenge.
C. Headphones increase hearing loss in young people.
D. AI is helping solve the cocktail party problem.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. D

Tai Chi, a traditional, slow-moving form of Chinese martial art, is known to increase flexibility and improve balance. Now, new research suggests it’s good for lowering blood pressure in people with prehypertension. Prehypertension is blood pressure that’s higher than normal but doesn’t quite reach the level of high blood pressure. It’s considered a warning sign that heart disease may be ahead, and it raises the risk of having a heart attack.
The new findings, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, add to a large body of research pointing to health benefits from Tai Chi, a wellness practice that combines slow, gentle movements and postures with mindfulness. In the study, researchers in China randomly assigned 342 adults with prehypertension to one of two interventions. Roughly half the people participated in exercises, including jogging, climbing stairs, brisk walking and cycling. The other half was trained to practice TaiChi. Both groups got hour-long sessions four times a week. After 12 months, those in the Tai Chi group saw bigger drops in their blood pressure.
“Tai Chi kind of helps to just relax everything, and I think it’s that response that’s working towards lowering blood pressure,” says professor Taylor-Pillie, whose research focuses on how mind-body interventions such as Tai Chi can benefit older adults. She notes a large body of evidence has now shown the benefits of Tai Chi on blood pressure. The practice is appealing as a form of exercise because it is low impact and requires little space or equipment. “I think the beauty of Tai Chi is that you don’t have to have a special gym membership and you don’t have to have special clothing,” Taylor-Pillie says. “Once you learn Tai Chi, you can do it anytime, anyplace, anywhere. And it does kind of provide that calming, relaxing effect.”
Studies have also shown that practicing Tai Chi has many other benefits: help reduce the risk of falls, improve balance in older adults, protect against cognitive decline, and so on. But you have to practice it consistently to reap the most benefit.
12. What does “prehypertension” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. The potential risk of heart attack.
B. The possible outbreak of heart disease.
C. The state of certain kind of blood pressure.
D. The clinic symptoms of high blood pressure.
13. What’s the purpose of the research
A. To prove previous studies.
B. To examine the appeal of Tai Chi
C. To determine the benefits of Tai Chi.
D. To find a solution to high blood pressure.
14. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Tui Chi has no impact on body and health.
B. We need special facility to practice Tai Chi
C. Anyone who practices Tai Chi can achieve the most benefit.
D. The calming effect of Tai Chi helps reduce blood pressure.
15. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Tai Chi-a relief to prehypertension
B. Tai Chi-a cure for high blood pressure
C. Tai Chi-a wellness practice worth researching
D. Tai Chi-a traditional Chinese martial art

【答案】One possible version:
Dear fellow students,
With AI tools becoming increasingly common on campus, some of us have grown overly reliant on them for homework, which is eroding our independent thinking abilities. Balancing AI assistance and autonomous learning is crucial. While AI can offer inspiration and save time, true academic growth comes from our own exploration and critical thinking.
Here are some practical suggestions. First, establish clear rules for using AI tools, such as only using them for idea generation instead of copying answers directly. Second, reserve specific tasks, like essay writing and complex problem-solving, for independent work to strengthen our thinking skills. Finally, view AI as a supplementary resource rather than a substitute for effort.
Let’ s cherish the value of independent thinking. By using AI wisely, we can combine its efficiency with our intellectual creativity.英语试题

A. Karen had Alzheimer’s.
B. The couple listened to what Virginia said patiently.
C. The “yes, and” method made Virginia confused.
D. It’s easy to correct someone with Alzheimer’s.
6. What does the word “theirs” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Their interaction. B. Their life. C. Their reality. D. Their answer.
7. By writing the text, the writer wants to show _______ .
A. saying “yes, and” makes life easier
B. how hard it is to change people’s ideas
C. people tend to speak ill of others nowadays
D. how important it is to treat others gently
C
