superstar Maria Sharapova told the world she would leave the sporting world. Over the last couple
of years, she has been troubled with health problems. And that stopped her from returning to her
best condition. Also, the death of her long-time friend, Kobe Bryant, played a role in her decision
to retire. People around the world got to know Sharapova when she won Wimbledon in 2004. As
one of the best tennis players, she won many big events: the 2006 US Open, the 2008 Australian
Open, and the 2012 and 2014 French Open. She also came in second in the 2012 Olympic Games.
For 16 straight years from 2004 to 2020, Sharapova was one of the world's richest sportswomen.
