A
As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it impacts the planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time and the popularity of brands like Beyond Meat and cultivated meat from Aleph Farms and others are soaring. While there are a large number of plant-based milk substitutes, none of them have the same taste of cow’s milk. Now, an Israeli food-tech startup Remilk created real dairy products without harming a single cow or the planet.
The company stresses that their product Remilk is not a milk substitute but rather is the real deal. Made from a special process called microbial fermentation (微生物发酵), milk is manufactured in a lab instead of in a cow. And the end product is very healthy. “In a very simple way, we take the gene that encodes for the milk protein,” said Aviv Wolff, CEO of Remilk. “The gene functions as an instruction book for the production of the protein it encodes. And so, we insert the gene into a microbe that we’ve developed and it instructs our microbe to produce the specific protein in a very efficient way.”
The company says that the lab-produced milk tastes identical to the real thing and they hope to eventually replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition to milk. “Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,” Wolff said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable anymore.”
The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them. Dairy operations consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure (粪肥) and fertilizers from these farms get into local waterways. The production of Remilk uses only 5 percent of the resources and produces only I percent of the waste of producing cow’s milk according to the company. And they accomplish this by being 100 percent cruelty-free unlike dairy farms.
21.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The production of Remilk. B.The nutritional value of Remilk.
C.The role of gene in making protein D.The process of microbial fermentation.
22.What can we know from Wolff’s words in paragraph 3
A.Remilk was set up for animal protection. B.Dairy industries should be shut down.
C.Remilk aims to produce animal-free food. D.Prices of cow’s milk are soaring these days.
23.What does the underlined word “foul” probably mean in the last paragraph
A.Clean. B.Heat. C.Pollute. D.Consume.
24.What can we infer from the passage
A.Drawing on gene technology, Remilk has developed a variety of dairy products.
B.Conventional dairy industry is anything but eco-friendly.
C.The new technology adopted by Remilk transforms the gene of cows.
D.It’ll be some time before the public get accustomed to the milk substitutes.

In our daily lives, we may encounter situations where someone needs immediate assistance. However, what happens when the victim is responsible for getting into the dangerous situation Does this change the duty of the rescuer
The duty of rescue can be broadly divided into two categories: natural and artificial. A natural duty arises when a rescuer encounters a victim by chance and has the ability to provide assistance without significant cost to themselves. On the other hand, an artificial duty is created by agreement among participants, such as in a mutual aid framework or an insurance policy that covers the costs of a professional rescue service.
When considering the duty of rescue, it is crucial to acknowledge the responsibility of the victim. If the victim is responsible for getting into difficulties, this may affect the rescuer’s obligations in several ways. Firstly, it may reduce the cost that the rescuer is obliged to bear. Secondly, the victim’s responsibility may reduce the force of the duty of rescue. In other words, the rescuer may have stronger reasons to prioritize other duties over the duty of rescue, especially when facing limited resources or choices between different victims.
However, it is important to note that the duty of rescue should never be completely negated (否认). Even in cases of carelessness or wrongdoing, the rescuer’s primary aim should be to protect the victim’s life and bodily integrity. In practical terms, acknowledging the victim’s responsibility can just help balance the expected costs of the rescue between the victim and the rescuers more fairly. For example, in the case of a lost hiker who knowingly exposed themselves to risk, volunteers may choose to delay the rescue until morning or charge the victim for the costs involved.
Moreover, recognizing the victim’s responsibility can encourage personal accountability and prevent future risks. By making individuals aware of the potential consequences of their actions, we can encourage responsible behavior and reduce the need for rescue in the long run.
25.Which of the following situations may create an artificial duty of rescue
A.A passerby sees a car accident and decides to help.
B.A friend offers to help another friend move to a new house.
C.A volunteer in a mutual aid agreement assists other members.
D.A firefighter responds to a call for assistance in a burning building.
26.What is the primary aim of the rescuer when facing a victim
A.To protect the victim’s safety and health.
B.To acknowledge the victim’s responsibility.
C.To charge the victim for the costs of the rescue.
D.To prioritize other duties over the duty of rescue.
27.What is illustrated by the example of the lost hiker
A.The need for professional rescue services.
B.The extra cost of rescue caused by victims.
C.The difficulty of balancing duties in emergencies.
D.Recognition of victim’s fault for fair rescue cost split.
28.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The artificial and natural duties of rescuers.
B.Ways to reduce the need for rescue services.
C.The effects of technology on rescue operations.
D.The rescuer’s duty and the victim’s responsibility.

On the southern and western coasts of South Africa, tiny white huts have been appearing on beaches. The structures are being built to protect African penguin families-from the hot sun.
African penguins spend most of their time in the cool water of the “South Atlantic Ocean”. However, in order to breed and incubate (孵化) their eggs, they have to be on land. Unfortunately, the birds’ black coats absorb heat from the burning African sun. If they return to the water to cool off, they cannot guard their eggs and young chicks from predators.
To stay safe and cool, the penguins would usually dig holes in layers of guano (海鸟粪) that had built up over thousands of years. However, in the 1800s, traders collected most of the guano and sold it as fertilizer. Due to this loss and other threats such as overfishing of their prey, the penguins’ population has fallen from about three million to fewer than 50,000 birds.
The African Penguin Nest Project set out to solve the problem by creating artificial nests. The nests are shaped into round-roofed structures just large enough to fit two penguin parents and their chicks. White paint on the outside of the structure reflects sunlight. Small holes allow cool air to flow through the nest, keeping the inside at a safe temperature of 35°C or lower.
The first artificial homes were placed on the beach in 2008. “Within a matter of minutes, penguins were running into them,” project director Kevin Graham said. “That tells you how desperate they are for any opportunity to find a safe place to nest.” Now more than 500 nests have been installed, and at least 99% of them are being used. Local experts say the huts are helping penguin chicks survive and are therefore an important step toward saving the species. “It’s a big part of it,” Graham said, “but there has to be more.”
29.Why were white huts built on South African beaches
A.To attract tourists to watch penguins. B.To provide food for penguin chicks.
C.To help penguins swim in the ocean. D.To shelter penguin families from sunlight.
30.Which feature of the artificial nests helps penguins stay cool
A.They are in round-roofed shape. B.They are made of guano layers.
C.Small holes allow air circulation. D.Their white color can absorb heat.
31.What is Kevin Graham`s attitude toward the artificial nests
A.He considers them unnecessary. B.He thinks they are a partial solution.
C.He doubts their long-term effectiveness. D.He believes they saved penguins species.
32.Which would be the best title for the passage
A.Beach Huts Help African Penguins B.Threats That Endanger African Penguins
C.African Penguins: Masters of Adaptation D.History of Guano Trading in South Africa

Michael shared a home — and an unbreakable bond — with his blind father. Though he spent every game on the sidelines, his father never failed to cheer from the stands, rain or shine. Despite being the smallest in his high school class, Michael felt his father’s unwavering support, “Play because you love it,” his father would say, “not because you have to.” With passion, Michael vowed to give his all at every practice, dreaming of finally stepping onto the field.
All through high school Michael never skipped a drill or a game, yet the bench remained his only companion. His father, however, never missed a moment, his voice booming encouragement above the crowd’s roar.
When entering college, Michael decided to try out for the team as a “walk-on.” Everyone thought he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach kept him, not for his size, but for his relentless efforts. “You inspire the others,” the coach admitted. Overjoyed, Michael called his father, who wept tears of pride. For the following years, Michael attended every practice, his dedication unbroken — though the field remained out of reach.
The week of Michael’s final playoff game, tragedy struck. As he jogged onto the practice field, the coach handed him a telegram. After reading it, he became deathly silent... Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today ” The coach’s arm wrapped around him. “Take the week off, son.”
Saturday arrived, and the team trailed (落后) by ten points in the third quarter. Suddenly, a figure emerged — Michael, silent and determined, put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were astounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon. “Coach, let me play!” Michael pleaded. The coach frowned — no way would he risk the game on his least-experienced player. Yet Michael’s eyes, burning with resolve, refused to back down.

Good morning, everybody, and welcome to Mount Rushmore. Mount rushmore is south Dakota’s top tourist attraction, and now I’m going to give you a plan of the site. We’re currently standing at the entrance. If you follow the footpath up to our left, you will find the information centre. In front of us is the refreshment center, where you can help yourselves to coffee, locally grown tea and a delicious selection of cold drinks and biscuits. To our right, not far up the footpath, is the gift shop. It’s the perfect place to pick up some small souvenirs. Now, further up the footpath behind the gift shop is a big stone building with a workshop. This is where all of our souvenirs are made by hand. If you carry on walking up past the workshop, you’ll find our state of the art visitor centre. Now for the real treat! After you have walked past the visitor centre, you can follow the footpath up to the left, which will take you to our wooden shelter. From there you will have the best view of Mount Rushmore, an experience not to be forgotten. Right, if one wants a guided tour, then I’m starting at the information centre. If you’d like to follow me, this way please.

M: He’d probably be best in level five, they start off practising on the camping site here and we aim to get them riding on the road. But first they’re taken to ride in the park away from the traffic.
W: Right. And tell me a bit about the classes.
M: We used to have twenty kids in a class but it didn’t work well. So now we have a limit of eight children in each class to make sure that instructors can give each child enough attention.
W: And is there anything special Charlie should bring along with him
M: Well, maybe some spare clothes and a snack for break time, but we’ll provide drinks. The classes normally start at nine thirty every morning. But on day one, you should aim to get Charlie here by nine twenty. We need to have a very careful check to make sure that every child’s equipment fits properly
W: Of course.

M: That’ll work. Also on June fifth, we want to take our clients on a tour of the local attractions. Could you help arrange that

M: That means a lot to me. Actually I grew up in an area without a concert hall. I was inspired by watching videos of classical music and then I started searching for online music teachers to help me learn.

Today, we are going to talk about the spread of culture. We all know that throughout history, ideas spread from one culture to another when different groups of people get in touch with each other. However, people don’t always adopt new ideas like new inventions, food and ways of life. Well, why is this the case One possible reason is the availability of raw materials. For example, a foreigner introduced a tasty soup. But to make the soup, people would have to use the dried leaves of a special plant that is not available in this country. So, no raw material. What happens next They would not make the soup a part of their regular diet, even if they enjoyed the taste. Another reason is that if people already have something similar in their own culture, they might reject the new item. They may feel they don’t need two things serving the same purpose. For example, if a traveler introduces a unique musical instrument to a country, but the locals already have their own instrument that produces similar sounds. It’s likely that the new instrument will not be widely accepted.

W: No. In fact, I think I have left a bad impression on Mrs Lee. I have made a lot of mistakes in her class.

And the end product is very healthy. “In a very simple way, we take the gene that encodes for the milk protein,” said Aviv Wolff, CEO of Remilk. “The gene functions as an instruction book for the production of the protein it encodes. And so, we insert the gene into a microbe that we’ve developed and it instructs our microbe to produce the specific protein in a very efficient way.” 故选A。
根据第三段中““Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,” Wolff said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable anymore.”
根据最后一段中“According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them. (据世界自然基金会称,奶牛向大气中排放了大量的温室气体,导致全球变暖和气候变化,同时还会foul它们周围的空气)”可知,根据世界自然基金会的说法,奶牛向大气中排放了大量的温室气体,导致全球变暖和气候变化,并污染了周围的空气。故划线词意思是“污染”。A. Clean.清洁;B. Heat.加热;C. Pollute.污染;D. Consume. 故选C。
根据最后一段“The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high.

根据第二段中“The duty of rescue can be broadly divided into two categories: natural and artificial. A natural duty arises when a rescuer encounters a victim by chance and has the ability to provide assistance without significant cost to themselves. On the other hand, an artificial duty is created by agreement among participants, such as in a mutual aid framework or an insurance policy that covers the costs of a professional rescue service.(救助义务大致可分为自然救助义务和人为救助义务两大类。当救援人员偶然遇到遇险者,并且有能力在不给自己造成重大损失的情况下提供援助时,就会产生一种自然责任。另一方面,人为的救援责任是由参与者之间的协议产生的,比如在互助框架或涵盖专业救援服务费用的保险政策中)”可知,在互助协议中,志愿者帮助其他成员是基于互助协议这一参与者之间的约定,属于人为的救援责任。故选C项。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Even in cases of carelessness or wrongdoing, the rescuer’s primary aim should be to protect the victim’s life and bodily integrity.(即使在遇险者粗心或犯错的情况下,救援者的主要目标也应该是保护受害者的生命和身体完整)”可知,救援者面对遇险者时的主要目标是保护遇险者的安全和健康。故选A项。
根据第四段中“In practical terms, acknowledging the victim’s responsibility can just help balance the expected costs of the rescue between the victim and the rescuers more fairly. For example, in the case of a lost hiker who knowingly exposed themselves to risk, volunteers may choose to delay the rescue until morning or charge the victim for the costs involved.(在实际操作中,承认遇险者自身责任有助于更公平地分摊救援方与遇险者之间的预期成本。例如,当一名明知风险仍执意涉险的登山者失踪时,救援队可以选择延迟至次日清晨开展营救,或要求遇险者承担相关救援费用)”可知,这个例子说明了认识到遇险者的过错有助于公平地分摊救援成本。故选D项。
28.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“However, what happens when the victim is responsible for getting into the dangerous situation Does this change the duty of the rescuer (然而,遇险者对自己陷入危险情况负有责任时,会发生什么呢 这会改变救援者的职责吗 )”以及后文对救援者职责分类、遇险者责任对救援影响等内容的阐述可知,文章主要介绍了救援者的职责和遇险者的责任。故选D项。

根据最后一段“Local experts say the huts are helping penguin chicks survive and are therefore an important step toward saving the species. “It’s a big part of it,” Graham said, “but there has to be more.”(当地专家表示,这些小屋正在帮助企鹅幼崽生存,因此是拯救该物种的重要一步。
故选A。

故填which。
故填a。
both…and… 和……”,用于连接并列内容,此处用于连接“(their joyful) attitude”和“dreams (for a bright future)”。故填and。

故填were。

The coach hesitated, then gestured Michael to enter. With his heart pounding like thunder, Michael rushed onto the field, father’s encouraging words echoing through his mind. Small as he was, every movement revealed years of unyielding determination. Driven by memories of his father’s persistent cheers, he charged forward. The opposing team could not stop him. Michael spun skillfully, leaving all defenders behind. Gradually yet surely, his team started to gain the upper hand, and the score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, Michael intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown.
The stadium erupted as Michael scored the winning goal. Embraceing him tightly, the coach marveled, “Kid, how did you work such a miracle ” Eyes glinting with brimming tears, Michael turned slowly. “Well, sir, you knew my dad had passed away...” Pausing briefly, he swallowed hard, as if summoning every ounce of courage. “Blind as he was, Dad never missed a game — a silent yet ever-present spectator. But today he could actually witness me in action, and I made it real!” With a gentle touch on the weathered bench whose surface bearing their shared memories, Michael knew true victory lay in perseverance rather than glory.
