A
From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Most believe that music helps increase creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that view. The study results were echoed by scientists from Lancaster University, and the University of Gavle, saying their findings show music actually weakens creativity.
To reach their conclusions (结论), researchers had volunteers complete verbal (口头的) problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music significantly weakened the volunteers’ ability to complete tasks connected with verbal creativity. The team also tested background noises like those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no influence on subjects’ creativity.
The tasks were simple word games. For example, volunteers were given three words, such as dress, rise, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word connected with all three that could be combined (结合) to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunrise, sunflower). Volunteers completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while listening to two different types of music: rock music or light music
“We found strong evidence of weakened performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” says co-author D.Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University. He and his colleagues find that music negatively influences the verbal working memory processes of the brain, preventing creativity. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly (似乎) no effect, the study’s authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “regular state” environment that doesn’t affect concentration.
“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music increases creativity, and instead show that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage for creative performance in problem solving,” the study reads.
21.What does the underlined word “echoed” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Challenged B.Accepted C.Doubted D.Heard
22.What were the volunteers asked to do in the study
A.To play music. B.To combine given words.
C.To create new words. D.To connect words with music.
23.What can we infer from the study
A.Quiet background inspires creativity best. B.Library noise does no harm to creativity.
C.Music has a bad effect on language ability. D.Music types matter in creative performance.
24.Which is the main idea of the passage
A.Quiet Environments Prevent Concentration. B.Background Noise Affects Concentration.
C.Composing Music Weakens Creativity. D.Listening to Music Reduces Creativity.
B
Have you ever bought anything useful for the useless product you bought earlier This cycle just goes on and on, and you will end up with tons of useless things. This is an interesting phenomenon we call The Birdcage Effect.
You don’t feel like having a pet animal. One day, your friend sends you a birdcage as your birthday present and you put it on the table. Then multiple people pass by asking you where the pet bird is. After you answer no, people suggest you get one for the birdcage. Finally, you buy one bird, then bird treats, toys, and even clothes. You keep adding more articles to the bird’s bill. Is there anything wrong
As the name suggests, The Birdcage Effect controls people’s ability to think from the outside of a birdcage. You buy a pet bird — which you never thought about having — because of a birdcage. This effect is mainly caused by you voluntarily assuming that the birdcage is part of your table; it acts as one of the conditions instead of a variable — which it is supposed to be. Therefore, you will end up spending the necessary money on something unnecessary. For example, buy 1 get 1 free—the discount cages you so that you are getting something else that is unneeded.
Now, it comes to how to avoid The Birdcage Effect. First, we need to be result-driven: when dealing with a birdcage, telling yourself to consider the result before stepping on the path is a wise approach. Moreover, it’s important to remember that less is typically better than more. When you are given a “birdcage”, throwing away the birdcage may seem ignorant and wasteful; however, it will stop you from getting a bird.
The Birdcage Effect is difficult to get rid of. However, it can be prevented if we properly control our unreasonable needs. Do not let an object direct your action, but let your logical mind guide your decision.
25.Which is The Birdcage Effect according to the passage
A.Buying pretty clothes for your lovely cat. B.Buying books for an unwanted shelf.
C.Getting a birdcage for your pet bird. D.Behaving better on others’ advice.
26.How does The Birdcage Effect influence us
A.It helps us save money by buying discounted goods.
B.It encourages us to consider the birdcage as a condition.
C.It limits our ability to understand outside the box.
D.It leads us to buy something necessary.
27.What can we do to avoid The Birdcage Effect
A.Allow an object to help make our choices. B.Avoid receiving gifts to prevent waste.
C.Buy things both cheap and practical. D.Free ourselves from ill-suited goods.
28.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Are You Trapped in a Birdcage
B.The Birdcage Effect: a Way to Keep Pet Birds.
C.The Birdcage Effect: a New Trend in Shopping.
D.Are You Having Trouble Choosing Gifts for Friends

Teenagers’ fitness is now a major concern, to which physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers: “First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a program that will help you become healthier.”
Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. “Overweight” means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. “Active” refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.
According to Dr. Lopez, overweight teenagers should keep active to keep healthy. “Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories.” Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises like push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each a day. “Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” said Dr. Lopez. The same principle applies to active teenagers.
Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities. “These are really important in order to prevent injuries,” Dr. Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be planned in the program in order to increase the person’s strength.
32.What does Dr. Lopez suggest for inactive teenagers
A.Focus only on bending exercises.
B.Do push-ups while avoiding walks.
C.Combine stretching with moderate (适度的) activities.
D.Start with one-hour daily weight training.
33.What does the underlined word “their” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Overweight people. B.Inactive people.
C.Active teenagers. D.Sports scientists.
34.How does Dr. Lopez view the exercise plans she proposes
A.As flexible but principle-based programs.
B.As temporary solutions without scientific proof.
C.As overly strict rules for all teenagers.
D.As unimportant supplements to diets.
35.What is the main purpose of the article
A.To criticize modern teenagers’ lazy lifestyles.
B.To promote a specific brand of sports equipment.
C.To provide scientifically-graded exercise guidance.
D.To compare ancient and modern fitness theories.
With the rapid development of science and technology, we don’t know how different our life will be in the future. 36
At first we think about human relationships. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet — even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. 37 On the other hand, our relationship with people won’t be as important as they are today — we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
38 Traveling to other planets or to the moon will also be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. 39 And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition.
Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather confident about our future. 40
A.We will pay more attention to protecting the environment.
B.We can only imagine it.
C.It will be much faster and easier for us.
D.However, we are convinced of the following.
E.Spending holidays will also be completely different.
F.We will pay more attention to protecting the environment.
G.We should be happy and believe good things will happen.

I always had a tough time in school. My father had put it best: “Some kids are good in school, and some aren’t. You’re just one of the kids who isn’t.” But I wasn’t satisfied with that answer.
Ever since the first day of school, it had been drilled into my brain that I must work for academic success. Our principal told us many times about striving for greatness.
But school wasn’t the worst of my troubles; my time at home had the greatest effect on me. Whether it was the glowing reports on my brothers, or even the A’s and B’s on their report cards, I felt I wasn’t as good. That I was inferior.
By fourth grade, my self-confidence had dropped considerably and I became depressed. As I only had a couple of friends, and I wasn’t even sure if they liked me, I had no one to talk to. I would lie awake at night and wonder if my life had some meaning. Weren’t my brothers embarrassed by me Did they see me as the failure of the family The black sheep Tears would soak my pillow.
In high school, without special education, I had to find new ways to help myself do better in school. But the pain from the past six years had caught up with me, and I hated studying. I had had enough failure in my life. Why add more salt to the wound
One night during my sophomore year, I was working with my math teacher. I just wasn’t getting it, and it had been going on like that for a few weeks. My teacher finally had it, and started shouting at me in front of the entire crowd of kids. “How dumb can you be We’ve been reviewing the same four math steps for three weeks now. If you don’t start shaping up soon, you’ll end up being a failure. “It was the first time that someone had said “You’re a failure” right to my face.

M: I wish I could. But I have an important report to make next Monday. It’s already Thursday today but the report is only half done. My mother also asked me to take the TV to a repair shop, but I can’t do that until I finish my work.
W: I think I can help you prepare the report. I have some experience in preparing reports by using AI. Well, I’m about to go to meet my aunt now. Why don’t you call me in the afternoon I’m free this afternoon.
M: Thanks. If you could lend a hand, I can make it to the party tomorrow.

W: Well, thank you for inviting me today to talk about the clean-up event we organized along the beach. I understand that some of you local listeners want to be volunteers, so let me tell you a little more about the event.
We meet on the third Sunday of each month, whatever the weather! Anybody who wants to help clean the beach of waste should meet us at 10:00 am in Sunshine Shore outside the pie shop. People are welcome to turn up alone or in groups. We generally have around one hundred volunteers from young children to students and older people.
And there’s free parking for everyone as it is Sunday. Don’t worry about gloves or bags because the government there brings everything for volunteers. They also provide you with food. So the things you need to remember are your comfortable shoes and sun cream!

M: Well... I’ve found one, but I don’t know if it’s yours. Where did you lose it
W: I last had it in the hall of the health club yesterday afternoon. I saw you there.
M: Yes, I was there after changing my clothes and I found a sports bag, but I gave it to the information desk. What color is your sports bag
W: It’s blue and yellow with two handles. Inside, there is a coat and a bright green scarf. I’ve taken somebody else’s sports bag by mistake. It was next to mine and it’s black and yellow. There is a washcloth and a book in it.
M: The one that I found is orange and black. Why don’t you call the club to ask if they’ve found it
W: OK, thank you.

M: Hello, everyone. It’s now 7 o’clock in the morning, time for our radio’s hourly weather report. If you’re just about to leave your house, don’t forget to take your umbrella with you. The rain is expected to start in the early morning, so prepare to protect yourself. However, the sky will clear this afternoon, and the temperature will be 12℃. It will be a much cooler day tomorrow with a high of only 5℃, the coldest day in several months, so you’ll need a warm coat when you head out in the morning. Now for the traffic report. On Highway 55 going east, traffic is moving slowly, so if you’re heading east, we recommend taking Highway 25. But remember that highway repair is about to begin tomorrow along Highway 26 from No. 15 Street up to Berry Road exit. You may want to avoid that area for the next few weeks. Now, after a break we will be with Connie for the sports updates. So please stay with us.

M: In my family, my dad used to do things like that and my sister and I didn’t do much work.
W: Well... I guess most families are like that!
M: Did your brothers share your work
W: No. When I was young, I just did what they told me to do, and I wasn’t thinking much about it. But I didn’t enjoy cleaning.

W: John, when did you create your app Gimkit
M: I did that in the year 2019.
W: Why did you create it
M: I was in my junior year at a public high school then. My school required us to take part in projects. My project that year required me to make an app.
W: What inspired you to make such an app
M: Back then some of my classmates complained that they didn’t like preparing for their exams. They found it boring. So I wanted to create an app that could make learning more fun. In the end I created an app that let teachers create resources in the form of game-style quizzes.
W: Is it helpful
M: I think so. Students love using it. Now it is used by learners in more than 100 countries across the world. Research shows that it can increase learning by up to 14%.

根据第二段“You don’t feel like having a pet animal. One day, your friend sends you a birdcage as your birthday present and you put it on the table. Then multiple people pass by asking you where the pet bird is. After you answer no, people suggest you get one for the birdcage. Finally, you buy one bird, then bird treats, toys, and even clothes.(你不想养宠物。
根据第三段“As the name suggests, The Birdcage Effect controls people’s ability to think from the outside of a birdcage.(顾名思义,鸟笼效应控制了人们从鸟笼外部思考的能力。)”
根据倒数第二段“Now, it comes to how to avoid The Birdcage Effect. First, we need to be result-driven: when dealing with a birdcage, telling yourself to consider the result before stepping on the path is a wise approach. Moreover, it’s important to remember that less is typically better than more. When you are given a “birdcage”, throwing away the birdcage may seem ignorant and wasteful; however, it will stop you from getting a bird.(现在,我们来看看如何避免鸟笼效应。首先,我们需要以结果为导向:在处理鸟笼时,告诉自己在踏上这条路之前要考虑结果是明智的做法。此外,重要的是要记住,少通常比多好。当你得到一个“鸟笼”时,扔掉鸟笼可能看起来是无知和浪费的;然而,这会阻止你得到一只鸟。)”可知,避免“鸟笼效应”需要控制不合理需求,不被不合适的物品引导行动。故选D。
28.主旨大意题。文章第一段提到“This is an interesting phenomenon we call The Birdcage Effect.(这是一个有趣的现象,我们称之为鸟笼效应。)” 故选A。

根据第一段中“We are truly a classroom without walls, offering educator-developed programs and field trips that can be made based on your needs.(我们真的是一个没有围墙的教室,提供由教育工作者开发的课程和可以根据你的需求安排的实地考察)”可知,Fair Oaks Farms的特点是可以根据需求提供服务。故选B。
根据文中价格信息“$3 Pig Adventure only;$3 Crop Adventure only;$6 Dairy Adventure only;$7 Dairy and Pig Adventures”可知,Pig Adventure 3美元,Crop Adventure 3美元,Dairy Adventure6美元。
根据Crop Adventure部分中“Learn about the application of new technology and the future of farming.(了解新技术的应用和农业的未来)”以及Dairy Adventure部分中“Our dairy museum has over 60 interactive exhibits and you can gain knowledge of the dairy in a whole new way in our 3D/4D movie theatre.(我们的乳品博物馆有60多个互动展品,你可以在我们的3D/4D影院以全新的方式了解乳品)”可知,在Crop Adventure和Dairy Adventure中,人们可以接触到先进的技术。

根据文章第三段““Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” said Dr. Lopez. The same principle applies to active teenagers.(Lopez博士说:“不太活跃的人可以比超重的人多做一点运动,因为他们的身体更强壮。”同样的原则也适用于活跃的青少年。)”以及第四段“Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities.(Lopez博士建议每周进行一小时或更长时间的跑步和其他形式的高强度运动,并且每天花15分钟进行伸展和弯曲运动。)”
根据划线单词所在句“Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,(不太活跃的人可以比超重的人多做一点运动,因为他们的身体更强壮)”可推测,该句比较了“Inactive people”和 “overweight people”的情况,说不活跃的人可以比超重的人多做一点运动,因为“他们的”身体更强壮,这里“他们的”显然是指前面提到的“Inactive people”,即不活跃的人。故选B。
故选A。
文章第一段提到“Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers.(运动科学家Dr. Helen Lopez为青少年提供了以下建议。)”,紧接着短文第二段提到Dr. Lopez认为有三个健康水平需要改变生活方式,第三段和第四段提到Dr. Lopez为超重、不活跃和活跃的青少年分别提供了建议。由此可知,这篇文章的主要目的是提供科学的分级运动指导。故选C。

40.上文提到“Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather confident about our future. Be Wise Internet Users
Good morning, everyone. It goes without saying that the Internet plays an important role in our lives. However, to make the best use of the Internet, we must be wise Internet users.
In the first place, we must use the Internet for the right purposes. Besides having online classes, we can search for some useful information on the Internet instead of playing computer games. What’s more, we need to limit our time on the Internet. It’s common knowledge that long screen time does great harm to our mental health as well as our eyes.
Let’s use the Internet wisely!

67.One possible version:
I stormed out of the room and went back home, throwing myself into my mother’s arms. Hugging me tightly and patting me on the back, my mother asked what had happened to me. I burst into tears and told everything to her, asking when the pain and disappointment would end. With a warm and determined voice, my mother comforted me. “You are not a failure,” she whispered. “Everyone has their own pace and strengths. What really matters is not how others judge you but how you judge yourself. Everyone under heaven is born with a useful talent.”
My mother’s words cheered me up and I decided to make a new beginning. Yes, everyone is useful in this world. I started setting small, achievable goals for myself and gradually built up my confidence. With renewed determination, I sought help from teachers and classmates, who were more than willing to lend a hand. Slowly but surely, my grades began to improve, and I even made some new friends. The darkness that had once consumed me was replaced by a glimmer of hope, and I began to believe that I could overcome any obstacle that came my way.
