The World's Most Striking Tourist Destinations
Risk-takers, grab your passports and there's nothing relaxing about these holiday spots.Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, USA
The 1500-metre climb to the top of Half Dome is the most difficult of Yosemite Valley's day hikes, and it's the last 120 meters that is the most dangerous. While there are ladder-like metal cables (缆绳) to help you reach the summit without rock climbing equipment, falling off them could be deadly.Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
With breathtaking views of the Aran Islands and Galway Bay, the Cliffs of Moher is one of Ireland's most popular tourist attractions. However, it's also one of the most dangerous, and one misstep at the edge could result in a 213-metre fall into the Atlantic. The safest way to experience the beauty of the cliffs is from the official path or one of the three viewing platforms.Mount Everest, Nepal
Visiting Mount Everest attracts around 1200 climbers each year. However, only about half ever reach the summit, and a few will die trying, according to the New York Times. By now, there have been 304 deaths, according to .Trift Bridge, Switzerland
Believe it or not, the Trift Bridge in the Swiss Alps Mountains is much safer than it looks. Still, acrophobes (恐高者) will likely want to avoid this dangerous man-made spot. At 90 metres high and 170 metres long, the Trift Bridge is one of the longest and highest pedestrian suspension bridges in the Alps, requiring three cable car rides to reach it.
21.Where is it possible to take in the view of the sea
A.At Half Dome. B.At Cliffs of Moher.
C.At Mount Everest. D.At Trift Bridge.
22.Which of the following is true about Mount Everest
A.It has three viewing platforms.
B.There are cables helping climbers up.
C.It has claimed at least 300 lives so far.
D.600 climbers who die trying reach its summit.

The European Patent Office announced that Maasai inventor Richard Turere has won the first place in the Young Inventors Prize 2023. Turere was distinguished for developing a system to keep lions from livestock (牲畜)by using light sequences (光序列), without harming the endangered lions as well.
The lion population in Africa is estimated to have declined by 43% in the past 20 years, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature. Many lions were killed to stop them from eating precious livestock, which is potentially a key concern for local communities and conservationists. In the Nairobi National Park, where Turere grew up, many animals have managed to seek shelter to escape the threat of hunters. Thus, lacking food in the wild, lions have been drawn to hunt livestock in areas where humans live, making the local communities the victims. Efforts by the government to pay farmers for their lost animals were too expensive to afford for a long time. To lessen this risk, lions were often killed, significantly impacting the lion population, the area's biodiversity and tourism.
After testing several ideas, Turere's invention, known as Lion LightsTM, is based on a simple concept: visually imitating (模拟) the human presence that keeps lions away. When it changes sequences of flashing lights fixed on fences, the lions don't feel comfortable with the patterns and are discouraged from hunting livestock. As word of his technology and its success spread, the demand for the system from other communities began to rise. The system typically runs on solar energy, but it can also be coupled with wind power when the weather is cloudy or there is little sun. It has attracted the international attention and has been applied in several other countries to help prevent various species of animals.
"I sincerely hope that this story will serve as a powerful source of inspiration for young kids. It should make them realize that they, too, have the ability and potential to take action and make a difference. Regardless of their background or circumstances, anyone has the capacity to achieve great things and bring about positive changes in this world." says Turere.
24.What is the main reason for the decline of the lion population in Africa
A.The loss of their natural habitats.
B.Being hunted to protect livestock.
C.The shortage of reliable food source.
D.The negative impact of climate change.
25.How does Turere's Lion Lights' m work
A.By keeping lights on all the time to scare away lions.
B.By releasing a special smell that makes lions uncomfortable.
C.By changing colors of flashing lights fixed on fences.
D.By visually imitating the human presence with flashing lights.
26.What can we infer from the text about Turere's invention
A.It is only suitable for humans to employ in Nairobi National Park.
B.It is too expensive for most local communities and countries to afford.
C.It has a positive impact on both wildlife conservation and local communities.
D.It requires a large amount of electricity and power to operate.
27.What is Turere's intention in sharing his story
A.To show off his great achievements in protecting the animals.
B.To encourage young kids to take action and make a difference.
C.To raise global funds for further research on his invention.
D.To promote the application of his Lion LightsTM worldwide.
For years, lemon water has been a morning ritual among successful people, praised as an easy and affordable way to keep healthy. Social media influencers and health blogs often list its supposed benefits, from detoxification (解毒) to weight loss, creating an almost magical reputation for this drink. But how much of that is scientifically supported
Dr. Debbie Fetter,a nutrition scientist, offers a balanced perspective. She explains that lemon water is neither harmful nor miraculous. Its primary advantage lies in maintaining the proper water balance. The slight flavor from lemon may encourage people to drink more water, particularly those who find plain water unappealing. However, she stresses that lemon water can supply the body with water just as effectively as regular water. Additionally, Dr. Fetter explained the common myth—neither the temperature of the water (hot or cold) nor the lemon's acidity can change the body's PH levels, as some articles inaccurately suggest.
Surprisingly, this humble drink has evolved into a status (地位) symbol. Though inexpensive to make, lemon water frequently appears in upscale (高档的) settings—think about luxury spas and high-end hotel breakfasts. Its presence in these spots gives itself an air of high standard. For many urban professionals, sipping lemon water in the morning creates a sense of calm and serves as a mental bridge to the health-conscious lifestyles of successful people. As TikTok user Nyemb-Diop observes, modern food culture is no longer just about survival—it reflects personal identities and emotional needs. People increasingly use dietary choices, like drinking lemon water, to express their values and ambitions, turning simple acts into statements about who they are.
Dr. Fetter emphasizes that there is no single food or drink that guarantees health. "If any, we want that magic pill." she says, referring to society's endless search for quick fixes. True health, however, comes from consistent, balanced habits—regular exercise, varied nutrition, and adequate sleep. While lemon water can be part of a healthy routine, relying on it alone ignores the complexity of human health.
In essence, lemon water's rise as a trendy habit highlights our desire for simplicity in self-care. Yet it also serves as a reminder: real health is built through daily effort, not by chasing after fancy yet empty-promise solutions.
28.What does the underlined word "ritual" in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Decoration. B.Emergency. C.Celebration. D.Routine.
29.According to Dr. Debbie Fetter, lemon water _________.
A.is a miracle drink with many benefits
B.is better and more nutritious than normal water
C.won't do any harm but isn't a magical drink
D.can change your body's PH and help keep healthy
30.Why has lemon water become a status symbol
A.Because it is too expensive for people to take in everyday.
B.Because it can help create an atmosphere of high standard.
C.Because it can provide a specially healthy emotional need.
D.Because it can reflect people's eagerness for luxury.
31.What does Dr. Fetter mean by saying "We want that magic pill"
A.People hope to find a single thing to ensure good health.
B.People prefer to take magic pills to make keeping healthy easier.
C.There is a magic pill that has been invented already.
D.Lemon water has been viewed as the unique magic pill.
Monitoring a person's pulse (脉搏) continuously can offer meaningful and important medical information, such as heart rate and, indirectly, blood pressure. However, pulse waves can change a lot from person to person and even within the same person at different times of day and during different activities. These changes make it difficult for current wearable pulse sensors to collect accurate data, which is especially problematic for those with cardiovascular (心血管的) diseases or high-risk factors for those diseases.
To solve this problem, a team led by Penn State researchers looked first not to the future, but back—to principles of pulse monitoring in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Using these principles, the researchers designed a pressure-sensing platform to identify the best pulse signal, which they combined with a machine learning model to also predict blood pressure. They published their results in Advanced Materials.
"According to TCM, doctors would take the pulse at three positions on the wrist: cun, guan and chi," said co-author Larry Cheng, Jr. Memorial Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State. "As they use three fingers to press at these locations, they increase the pressure to measure the pulse from shallow to deeper. This method provides a more accurate reading of pulse signals, whether the person is active or resting." Cheng explained that in order to design a wearable health monitor, they used two ideas, adaptive pressures and various wrist locations. The researchers used 3D printing to print a sensor array (阵列)—one device with several sensors. The principles of TCM allow them to address the limitations of using just one point on the wrist and to better collect data from different places on the wrist and at several depths.
"The sensor array is completely printed, which is cheaper than traditional methods of constructing a sensor. This also makes the sensor array easier to operate, improving its design as a wearable device," Cheng said.
32.What is the main problem with current wearable pulse sensors
A.They are too expensive for common people to consume.
B.They are too difficult for people to continuously operate.
C.They can't collect accurate data due to pulse wave changes.
D.They are useless for people with cardiovascular diseases.
33.How did the researchers improve pulse signal detection in their design
A.By decreasing the number of sensors on the wrist.
B.By combining adaptive pressure and multiple wrist locations.
C.By using artificial intelligence to replace traditional methods.
D.By only concentrating on shallow pulse measurements.
34.What is the purpose of writing this text
A.To introduce the current problems of producing wearable pulse sensors.
B.To describe why researchers collect accurate pulse data with 3D printing.
C.To explain the principles of pulse monitoring in traditional Chinese medicine.
D.To show the application of traditional Chinese medicine in pulse monitoring.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Old Wisdom Meets New Tech: TCM Inspires Pulse Sensors.
B.Old methods in New Devices: TCM Adopts AI for Pulse Analysis.
C.Old Herbs Meet Digital Tools: TCM builds New Sensor Software.
D.Old ideas in Modern Machines: TCM carries Pulse Sensor Errors.
Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) is serving as a powerful tool in the modern educational field, with the potential to transform traditional classrooms into active learning spaces. 36
One of the keys to AI's achievements is that students can have personalized learning experiences. Adaptive learning platforms powered by AI algorithm (算术)analyze students' performance data in real time. 37 For example, if a student is struggling with a particular math concept, the platform can provide additional practice problems at an appropriate difficulty level, along with detailed explanations.
Furthermore, AI-enabled educational games also play a significant role. With elements of competitions and rewards, these games are highly interactive. 38 For instance, in a language-learning game, students can earn points for correct answers, unlock new levels as they progress, and compete with their peers on leaderboards. This typical AI-based learning not only makes study more enjoyable but also taps into students' natural desire for achievement, driving them to actively participate in learning activities.
Another aspect is the use of chatbots. These AI-powered assistants are available to answer students' questions, provide guidance, and offer support. 39 Students can communicate with them at any time when they're stuck in a homework problem. The instant feedback and personalized attention can make students feel more engaged in their learning journey, as they always have a resource to turn to when they need help.
40 As AI continues to evolve and integrate more deeply into education, teachers will be able to create more dynamic and student-centered learning environments that inspire students to reach their full potential. Undoubtedly, AI will play an even greater role in fostering (促进) students' learning motivation and engagement in the future.
A.It can give up real-life learning opportunities.
B.Parents can also use AI to monitor children's progress more effectively.
C.The features create a sense of achievement and a desire for continuous learning.
D.The convenience of having such an available learning partner can be rather obvious.
E.Based on the analysis, they can track each student's learning strengths and weaknesses.
F.To be specific, AI offers ways to enhance students' learning motivation and engagement.
G.Over time, AI-based resources are becoming increasingly popular among teachers and students.

Mr Lim had been in a bad mood ever since he lost his job three months ago. His efforts to find another job had been fruitless as well. To make ends meet, his wife, Mrs Lim, had to take on an overseas job offer. This meant that Mr Lim was left to tend to his two children, Luke and Lisa, all by himself. Seeing their father being so unhappy every day, Luke and Lisa wanted badly to cheer him up. On the day of Mr. Lim’s birthday, the children decided to turn their intention into action.
“Hurry, Luke! Dad will be home anytime now! Let’s hide to surprise him!” Lisa said. After placing the birthday cake they had bought on the table, something that Luke and Lisa were sure Mr Lim would not have expected, they hid under it. It had taken the children many weeks to save enough money to buy their father’s favourite cake.
They smiled at each other when the smell of fresh paint reached their nose. Luke and Lisa had painted on their dining area’s wall, intending that to be decoration for Mr Lim’s surprise birthday party. Moments later, the main door creaked (嘎吱作响) open. Suddenly, a loud shout filled the air!
“Who messed up the wall on purpose ” Mr Lim shouted angrily. On hearing those words, Luke and Lisa stared at each other in shock. As the elder brother, Luke knew he had to protect Lisa. Taking a deep breath, Luke slowly moved out from under the table. Before he could say a word, Mr Lim gave him an earful (长时间的斥责). Hoping to clear up the misunderstanding, Luke said, “Dad, you’re wrong. We just wanted to...”
“Don’t you dare give me excuses!” Mr Lim raised his voice. Then, with great force, he threw the newspaper he had been holding at the dining table. It hit the birthday cake, ruining it! Seeing that, Luke’s heart broke. He cried.
“Dad ... we ... we’re sorry! We wanted to give ... give you a birthday sur ... surprise,” Lisa explained in between cries, after moving out from her hiding spot.

W: Good morning, everybody. I'm Professor Rosemary Parkinson and I'm going to be talking about good study habits and developing a study plan.
First, you must work out the time that you will use for study. When I say study, I mean all the schoolwork that you do out of class. Be realistic. Don't plan to spend 60 hours a week on it. It's too much for most of us. Set aside about two hours a day as your study time. And it's also a good idea to leave one day a week, Sunday perhaps, completely free, so you can relax. Now, for the place. Above all, it's best to try and set aside a quiet place. Perhaps your bedroom or a study. When the weather is nice, it could be outdoors. And we mustn't forget the library. Most of us find it inspiring to study with other learners.
Okay, time, place. What's next It is questions. Before you start reading something, always ask yourself, what questions do I want and expect to be answered in this chapter And don't try to do too much at a time. After 40 or 50 minutes, put the book down and tell yourself what you've learned, what questions have been answered, what it means. Take a short walk while you're doing it.

Hearing that, Mr. Lim fell silent for a moment before approaching Luke. He looked at his two children with a mixture of shock and remorse in his eyes. He knelt down, gently wiping away Luke’s tears and said, “I’m so sorry, son. I’ve been so caught up in my own troubles that I didn’t see your love and effort. This is the most special birthday gift I could have ever received.” He then hugged Luke tightly, and soon Lisa joined in, their little bodies trembling with the remnants of fear and relief. Mr. Lim realized how selfish he had been, drowning in his own sorrow while his children were trying their best to bring joy to his life.
After the tension eased, Luke and Lisa sang a birthday song for Mr. Lim. Their voices, though a bit shaky from the earlier incident, were filled with love. Mr. Lim listened with tears in his eyes, feeling an overwhelming sense of warmth and happiness. Despite the ruined cake and the painted wall, this was the most precious moment for him. As they finished the song, Mr. Lim kissed his children on their foreheads, promising them that from then on, he would face life’s difficulties with a more positive attitude and cherish every moment with his family.
