Most kids dream of becoming entrepreneurs (企业家) when they grow up, yet few get started as young as Jose Adolfo Quisocala Condori from Peru. At just 7 years old, he launched the Bartselana Student Bank, a children’s savings bank. Today his bank serves over 3,000 children clients and provides diverse financial services.
Jose got the idea for a children’s savings bank seven years ago, after noticing that many of his peers were frittering away their money on sweets and toys, instead of saving it for more meaningful purchases. He then started thinking of ways that children could generate money without the help of their parents, and recycling seemed like the obvious answer. An eco-bank not only allows kids of all ages to become economically independent but helps the environment.
“Initially, some adults thought a child couldn’t undertake this type of project,” Jose recalls. “They didn’t understand we are not only the future of the country but its present. Luckily, I had the support of my headmaster and an assistant in my classroom.”
Jose founded the bank in Arequipa in 2012. Children could become members of the bank by turning in at least 5 kilograms of recyclable waste and were required to deposit at least one other kilogram of waste every month to maintain their membership status. They would then set a savings goal, and could only withdraw money from their accounts when reaching their savings goal.
Within one year, the Bartselana Student Bank collected 1 ton of recyclable material and generated savings for 200 children at Jose’s school. Jose says the bank’s success has given him much encouragement. “My goal is to reach every kid. It’s just a matter of time,” he said.
4. What is special about the Bartselana Student Bank
A. It is the most convenient bank in Peru. B. It is greatly popular with entrepreneurs.
C. Its founder and target clients are kids. D. It offers service at home and abroad.
5. What does the underlined phrase “frittering away” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Drawing out. B. Giving away.
C. Raising actively. D. Spending unwisely.
6. How can one maintain the membership of this bank
A. By paying higher fees. B. By withdrawing money.
C. By turning in recyclable waste monthly. D. By opening a new bank account annually.
7. What is Jose’s plan for the bank
A. To expand the business. B. To cooperate with schools.
C. To employ more workers. D. To bring in new services.

A wildlife photographer was waiting for hours, desperate to take a shot of a rare heron. As it was getting dark, he grew increasingly frustrated. All of a sudden, a heron settled on a branch right before his eyes. Overjoyed, he quickly raised his camera, focused, and clicked just in time before the heron took off. To his amazement, he also spotted a super rare woodpecker flying by behind it.
This is an example of serendipity. It means something like “the fact of finding interesting or valuable things by chance”. The key is, you meet something unexpectedly, provided that you weren’t consciously trying to find that thing at the time.
Serendipity can occur in various situations, bringing unexpected yet remarkable outcomes. In 1895, while Wilhelm Conrad R ntgen was experimenting with cathode rays, he observed a fluorescent screen (荧光屏) glowing oddly, not in the direct ray path. Upon further exploration, he unearthed a new type of ray, X-rays, which revolutionized medicine and physics, granting doctors the ability to see inside the human body and aiding scientists in understanding matter. Likewise, in our daily lives, take a trip to a foreign city for example. When you’re hunting for a famous tourist spot and get lost, a wrong turn might lead you to a small, hidden cafe with mouthwatering local cuisine and a charming, cozy atmosphere. So, an accidental finding becomes a cherished memory of your journey.
Serendipity often brings a sense of surprise and delight, adding a touch of magic to life. However, relying merely on it is unwise. It’s unpredictable and uncontrollable.
8. Why is the wildlife photographer mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To solve a problem. B. To conduct a survey.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To give a suggestion.
9. Which of the following best illustrates the meaning of serendipity
A. A conventional practice. B. A detailed learning plan.
C. An organized family trip. D. An unexpected discovery.
10. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Scientists don’t believe fortune. B. Serendipity applies to many fields.
C. Visitors abroad fully rely on chance. D. People should be on the beaten track.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards serendipity
A. Disapproving. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
D
The inability for adults to recall earliest experiences has puzzled psychologists for over a century. While it was initially thought that young brains were not capable of forming lasting memories, research now indicates that memories are formed in early childhood but later become inaccessible.
Cristina Alberini, a neurologist, did relevant research. He found that memories formed during the infantile amnesia period (婴儿失忆期) are, in fact, stored in the brain until adulthood, even though they aren’t consciously remembered. In both animal and human adults, forming and storing long-term memories about one’s life experiences isn’t possible without the hippocampus, a brain region critical for memory. Alberini’s work has also shown that the region develops significantly in early childhood.
Different experiences may also explain why the age at which people recall their first memories varies significantly. Wang, an expert in how culture affects memory, has shown that the earliest memories in Americans date from an age of about 3. 5 years, almost six months younger than those in Chinese people. The American memories tend to be more self-focused and emotionally complex, while the Chinese recollections often centre on collective activities and general routines, she found.
Another explanation for the difference seems to be how parents discuss past experiences with their children. In Maori New Zealand, first memories emerge earlier than in those of a European background, at about 2. 5 years old. Prof. Elaine Reese at the University of Otago, who studies memory in children and adolescents, points to a strong emphasis on oral traditions in Maori culture but also thorough conversations when remembering past events.
The question, says Alberini, is how the earliest experiences affect our life forever if they are forgotten.
12. Why are the psychologists puzzled according to Paragraph 1
A. People’s early memories are accessed. B. Adults can’t recall earliest experiences.
C. Young brains are not developed enough. D. Children can form their lasting memories.
13. What does Alberini’s research suggest
A. Experiences are consciously remembered.
B. Memories fail to be stored in young brains.
C. Humans are better at forming memories than animals.
D. Hippocampus plays a critical role in storing memories.
14. What may impact the age of people’s recalling memories
A. Cultural differences and parenting styles. B. Collective activities and general routines.
C. Mature Hippocampus and complex emotions. D. Traditional events and thorough conversations.
15. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs
A. The solution psychologists will work on. B. The reason why adults can’t recall memories.
C. The place where lasting memories are stored. D. The way early childhood memories affect life.

Joe, a lively 10-year-old boy from Melbourne, has been crazy about drawing since he was a little kid. At home, his doodles (涂鸦) were everywhere. You could find them on his bed sheets and even on the walls of his room. At school, he filled his notebooks with all kinds of sketches — faces full of emotion, strange and wonderful monsters ... Sometimes, he couldn’t help but doodle on his classmates’ uniforms and backpacks too.
One day, after quickly finishing his classwork, Joe started doodling on his math book. Unfortunately, his math teacher noticed it right away. The teacher called him to the office and gave him a serious scolding. Feeling really frustrated and ashamed, Joe went home and told his parents what had happened. To his surprise, his parents didn’t blame him. His father said, “Well, we know you love drawing, but classroom is not the right place for it. We don’t want you to get into trouble again.” Then they calmly told him not to doodle in class and suggested that he sign up for an art class. They thought it might be a good way for him to develop his talent.
Then Joe started attending the art class, where he met his art teacher, Kerry. When Kerry first laid eyes on Joe’s work, she was truly astonished. Joe had an extraordinary ability to bring his wildest imagination to life on the paper. With just a simple black pen, he could create detailed and vivid scenes. Whether it was a cityscape filled with unique architectures, or a magical forest populated by fantastic creatures, Joe’s drawings were nothing short of remarkable. His lines were so precise, as if he had spent countless hours practicing, yet he seemed to draw with effortless ease, a natural talent that left Kerry in awe.
Kerry was so impressed by Joe’s works that she decided to share them on the Internet. Little did she expect that it would make a hit. People from all over were amazed by the unique creativity and astonishing details in Joe’s doodles.

C. Visitors abroad fully rely on chance. D. People should be on the beaten track.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards serendipity
A. Disapproving. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. C

My Views on Using AI to Write
Recently, there is a growing trend that many students turn to AI when they write a composition. In my opinion, while AI is a beneficial tool, it is not wise of us to rely on it too much.
On one hand, AI can help us generate ideas and correct grammar mistakes, which provide convenience and improve efficiency. On the other hand, over-reliance on AI may hinder our ability to think independently and creatively.
Therefore, I suggest AI should be used as a tool to assist us, rather than replace us. Only in this way can we truly improve our academic performance and personal growth.
