Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It’s bad to all living things in the world.

The tree house
Many architects in the world would like to build a “tree house”. Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The “root” (根) of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil to keep the home’s temperature.
Meals at home

Some time ago, scientists began making experiments to find out if it would be possible to set up a “village” under the sea.
A “house” with five rooms was built in a garage workshop and put into the water in the Red Sea. For 29 days, five men lived 40 feet under water. When they went back to the land, these men said they felt easy in breathing and had seen many interesting things. The leader of the team, Commander Barton, said it was possible to make use of the seabed (海床). He said that, if long-time stations were set up under the sea, underwater farms could provide food for the world. The population of the world have been growing faster and faster.
In much deeper water, two more divers (潜水员) stayed for weeks in a smaller “house”. The divers in the “house” spent most of their time searching the sea. Four times they went down to 360 feet deep and observed many strange sea life. Some animals had never been seen before. It is possible to move rapidly under water in a special box.
