It’s an old saying that most overnight successes have actually been hard at work for years, and perhaps never is that more true than in the case of Mel Robbins. Her star has been on the rise for a long time: her podcast (播客) has been flying high in the charts since she launched it in 2022, and she’s been writing best-sellers for the last 10 years.
Since the launch of her new book, The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can’t Stop Talking About, she’s reached a very high level. It’s been hard to find much media in the last few weeks that hasn’t mentioned her. Articles, podcasts, TV shows: you name it, the world is talking about Mel Robbins.
The new book is inspired by a phrase her younger daughter used when Robbins was being a “typical mom” at her son’s high school dancing party. “I was trying to arrange everything and it upset everyone in the process. I didn’t realize it until my daughter said, ‘Mom, you’re being annoying. Just let them eat where they want; let them ruin their sneakers; let them do what they want.’ That was the moment that actually hit my nervous system. And I then said to myself, ‘Let them’ and I felt my shoulders drop.”
This aspect of trying to give up controlling others makes up the central principle of the book. The Let Them Theory is a step-by-step guide on how to stop letting other people’s opinions and judgment impact your life. The theory, she wrote, will “set you free from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage everything and everyone around you.”
“I feel humbled by the fact that people are reading my new book in a moment in history where they have no time. People are making time to read something that could help them” she said in an interview.
24. What do we know about Mel Robbins from the first two paragraphs
A. She has been widely reported recently. B. She becomes famous overnight by luck.
C. She is known to people as a film star. D . She released her first best-seller in 2022.
25. Why did Robbins’ daughter say “Let them” to her
A. To make her annoyed on purpose. B. To inspire her for a new book.
C To stop her controlling behavior. D. To help her son grow mature.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Comments of the readers. B. Influences of Mel Robbins.
C. The interpretation of the book. D. The foundation of the theory.
27. How did Robbins feel about the success of her new book
A. Unbelievable. B. Grateful. C. Surprised. D. Cautious.

Baleen whales, like humpbacks (座头鲸), rely on singing to attract mates. But if killer whales hear their songs, these predators (掠食者) can find the singer and attack. A scientist discovered that some species, such as Bryde’s whales, stay safe by calling at deep, low frequencies that killer whales can’t hear. New studies suggest that traits found throughout the animal kingdom may have guided the development of human speech.
Male humpback whales produce sounds in a complex sequence, known as a song. A song can be up to 30 minutes long and may be repeated for hours. As with human language, the whales’ songs are culturally transmitted, meaning they are learned from others. An international team of scientists studied recordings collected over 80 years near the island of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean. Because humpback whale songs are made up of various sounds, the scientists created codes to describe different combinations of sounds. By figuring out which sounds often occurred together, they could identify combinations in whale songs that served a purpose similar to words in human speech.
When the researchers analyzed the whale songs using this method, they found that the songs followed a pattern, called Zipf’s law of frequency, that is also found in human language. Zipf’s law says that the most common word in a language is used twice as much as the second most common word, three times as much as the third most common word, and so on. For example, in English, the word “the” is used twice as often as “of” and three times as often as “and”.
Meanwhile, a separate study from Stony Brook University found more similarities between people and whales. The research found that the songs of humpbacks and blue whales use short words more often than longer ones, as is the case with human language. “Taken together, our studies suggest that humpback whale song has evolved to be more efficient and easier to learn,” said the study’s author, Mason Youngblood.
28. How do Bryde’s whales avoid being detected by predators
A. By imitating specific sounds of human language.
B. By creating confusing sounds to mislead predators.
C. By producing particular sounds at high frequencies.
D. By making sounds below predators’ hearing range.
29. What do we know about humpback whales’ songs
A. They are repeated hourly without change. B. They are acquired through mutual learning.
C. They follow a simple sequence of sounds. D. They consist of fixed sound combinations.
30. By Zipf’s law, if the most common word appears 100 times, the fourth common word appears ______.
A. 25 times. B. 33 times. C. 50 times. D. 100 times.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. How Whales Avoid Attacks. B. How Whales Use Short Words.
C. How Whale Songs Transmit Culture. D. How Whale Songs Mirror Human Speech.
D
China says its maglev hyperloop train (磁悬浮超级高铁列车) has broken the world speed record in a test run, reaching a surprising 623 km/h. Eventually, its makers want to build a train more than three times as fast as one that will break the sound barrier and run faster than airplanes.
The maglev train, named the T-Flight, was built by the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), New Atlas reported. Hyperloop trains work by pushing MLP (磁悬浮吊舱) through tunnels with very little air resistance. The previous record holder for the fastest maglev train is the L0 Series SCMaglev in Japan, according to JRPass, which can hit a top speed of 603 km/h.
To test the new train, CASIC built a track roughly 2 kilometers long in a low-pressure vacuum (真空) tube. To reach such high speeds, the trains must encounter almost no friction (摩擦). So CASIC smoothed the test track to a flatness with a 0.3 millimeters tolerance, meaning there is a 0.01-inch difference between the lowest and highest point of the flat surface. The 20-foot-wide tunnel also has a geometric size error of less than 2 mm, meaning the margin of error (误差幅度) against a perfect shape. The entire pipeline can return to normal pressure in five minutes, which shows its surprisingly-restored ability.
In the T-Flight’s second phase of testing, CASIC aims to extend the track to 60 km and allow the train to reach 1,000 km/h.
At this theoretical top speed, the maglev train would be even faster than a passenger jet, which travels at an average range between 925 km/h and 966 km/h, according to Simple Flying. The company’s ambitions don’t stop there, however, with plans for a connection between Wuhan and Beijing that can reach up to 2,000 km/h, according to a video from 2018.
Hyperloop systems can move vehicles at speeds much faster than conventional trains — most of which are restricted to 95 km/h in the U. S. Elon Musk first proposed a hyperloop system for the U. S. in 2013, but more than a decade later, Musk’s vision has yet to see the light of day. As one of the biggest companies in the industry, Virgin shut down its own hyperloop company, which most recently went by the name Virgin Hyperloop in 2023.
32.What do we know about hyperloop trains from the first two paragraphs
A.China’s T-Flight outpaces airplanes. B.T-Flight outspeeds SCMaglev by 20 km/h.
C.The first hyperloop train is made in Japan. D.They can merely travel without air friction.
33.What is prepared for testing the T-Flight
A.A free-pressure tube. B.An absolute flat track.
C.A perfectly-shaped tunnel. D.A quickly-recovered pipeline.
34.Which can be used to describe China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation
A.Ambitious and reliable. B.Conventional and practical.
C.State-owned and conservative. D.Advanced and international.
35.What is the best title of the passage
A.CASIC: A Promising Company B.China: A Country Leading the Trend
C.T-Flight: A Potential Record-Breaker D.Hyperloop: A Globally Common Topic

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The sleep habits you follow each day — known as sleep hygiene (睡眠卫生) — can have a positive effect on how well you sleep. Take a closer look at the following tips on how to improve sleep habits.
Block out light
Too much light exposure can throw off your sleep and circadian rhythm (昼夜节律). Blacking out curtains over your windows, or putting a sleep mask over your eyes, can block light and prevent it from interfering with your rest. 36 , which contributes to your body’s production of melatonin (褪黑素), a hormone that promotes sleep.
Reduce possible noise
Keeping noise to a minimum is an important part of building a sleep-friendly bedroom. 37 , consider drowning them out with a fan or white noise machine. Earplugs or headphones are another option to stop the noise from bothering you when you want to sleep.
38
If you want to make sure that you’re getting the recommended amount of sleep each night, then you need to build that time into your schedule. Considering your fixed wake-up time, you need to work backward and identify a target bedtime that allows for at least seven hours. 39 .
Disconnect devices before bed
40 , making it hard to truly wind down. The light from these electronic devices can also probably suppress your natural production of melatonin. Try to put them away for an hour or more before going to bed. Do some reading and meditation, which help relax your body or mind to fall sleep.
A.Ensure sufficient shut-eye
B.If you can not take a lunch break during the daytime
C.Avoiding bright light can help your transition to bedtime
D.Tablets, smartphones and laptops can keep your brain excited
E.For a full night’s sleep, adjust your routine as much as possible
F.If you cannot avoid nearby sources of loud or unpleasant sounds
G.Whenever possible, give yourself extra time before bed to get ready for sleep

When Jane taught the sixth-grade class at Morris School, all 34 of her students were dear to her, while Mark was truly special. He had that happy-to-be-alive attitude that made even his occasional tricks delightful.
Mark talked all the time. Jane reminded him again and again that talking without permission was unacceptable, and his response always sounded sincere: “Thank you for correcting me, Sister!”
One morning, Jane’s patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often. She looked at Mark and said, “If you say one more word, I’m going to tape your mouth shut!” Not even ten seconds passed before someone said, “Mark is talking again.” Having stated the punishment in front of the class, Jane decided she had to act on it. She walked to Mark’s desk, tore off two pieces of tape, made a big X with them over his mouth, and then returned to the front of the classroom.
As Jane glanced at Mark to see how he was doing, he winked (眨眼) at her. That did it! Jane started laughing. The entire class cheered as she shook her head and walked back to remove the tape. His first words were, “Thank you for correcting me, Sister.”
One Friday afternoon, after working hard on a new idea all week, the students were getting discouraged and starting to get annoyed with each other. To help lift their spirits and encourage a positive atmosphere, Jane asked them to write down the nicest things about the other students on a piece of paper and hand them in. Mark appeared nervous as if he was worrying his classmates would forget anything nice about him. That Saturday, Jane wrote down each student’s name on a separate sheet of paper and listed what everyone else had said about them.
On Monday, Jane gave each student their lists. As the children read them, the classroom was filled with quiet excitement and soft laughter.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】
Mark’s eyes widened as he read his paper. He sat there in silence, his face slowly turning red. It was obvious that he was deeply touched. Throughout the rest of the day, he held that paper close, as if it were the most precious thing in the world. When class was over, he came up to Jane and said in a soft voice, “Thank you, Sister. This means so much to me.” From that day on, Mark became even more polite and hard working. He no longer talked without permission and was always actively involved in class activities.
Jane was overjoyed to see Mark again at school after so many years. He had grown into a handsome and confident young man. Mark walked towards Jane with a big smile on his face. He hugged Jane tightly and said, “Sister, do you remember the list you gave me in sixth grade I’ve kept it all these years. It changed my life. It made me believe in myself and strive to be a better person.” Jane was moved to tears. She realized that sometimes, a small act of kindness could have a huge impact on a child’s life. And those kind words written on the paper had become a precious memory and a source of strength for Mark.
