One of the world’s most important and lovely animals is quickly disap-pearing. Can you guess which one it is It has the longest neck among all animals. Yes, it’s the giraffe.
In 1985, there were between 152,000 and 163,000 giraffes, and they lived in the plains and forests in Africa. However, there were about 97,500 giraffes in the wild after 31 years. The number of giraffes fell so fast! Every year, their population keeps going down.
Why are there fewer and fewer giraffes It is because humans are hunting
(猎杀) animals and building more houses by destroying (毁坏) their habitats
(栖息地). And they are also killing the animals to eat their meat. A report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature said,“Giraffes will die out slowly in the near future. Imagine a world with no giraffes. To some people, that thought is too terrible for words. So we should do something for giraffes before it’s too late.”
According to David O’Connor, a researcher with the San Diego Zoo,most people think giraffes are everywhere. Kids’ books are full of giraffes. They are always on display in zoos. But giraffes are in great danger now.He said that humans should stop killing these endangered animals and set up wildlife reserves. A robot called Ai-Da made a painting of Alan Turing called“AI God:Portrait of Alan Turing”that sold for $1.08 million. This makes it the most expensive painting ever made by a robot.
People thought the painting would sell for between $120,000 and$180,000, but it sold for much more because many people were interested in it. The idea for Ai-Da came from Aidan Meller, an Englishman and he worked with a team of almost 30 people to build and program Ai-Da.
Ai-Da looks like a woman with short black hair and has cameras that help her see. She can paint with an arm that holds a pen or paintbrush. She can also talk and answer questions about her artwork.
Before starting the painting, Ai-Da talked with her human helpers about what to paint. She then made 15 paintings of different parts of Mr. Turing’s face, each taking six to eight hours to finish. These paintings were about the size of two pieces of notebook paper. Finally, Ai-Da chose three of these paintings to make one final picture. After that, a special 3D printer was used to make the small painting bigger.
Not everyone thinks of Ai-Da as a real artist, but Mr. Meller says she is like a“mirror (镜子)”of the future. He believes Ai-Da’s art can make people think about how AI is changing the world.
As for the money from the sale (销售), Mr. Meller says his team will use it to make Ai-Da a better robot artist.“She is getting better and better,” he says, adding that“she is already using her third painting arm.”
