If you love English literature, old books, or bookstores, then you must read 84 Charing Cross Road. It is a collection of real - life letters of Helene Hanff, a television writer and New York City-based author, and Frank Doel, the buyer for London’s Marks & Co. Booksellers, a bookshop located at 84 Charing Cross Road. Their correspondence covers twenty years throughout the 1950s and 1960s; as the decades go by, their business relationship develops into a true friendship.
This transcontinental friendship begins with a letter inquiring after an ad in the Saturday Evening Review. Hanff’s tastes favor the out-of-print (think Chaucer and The Oxford Book of English Prose), and she can’t find anything in New York.
Doel responds, sending some lovely books for cheap, and they’re off. They slowly reveal their lives to each other—Hanff’ s as an ambitious playwright, and Doel’s as a husband and father in post-war London. Letters from Hanff’s friends and Doel’s coworkers create a three - dimensional description of this unlikely friendship.
Hanff and Doel are a charming sliver (片段) of life in mid - century New York and London. As a bookseller, I wish I could have been around when business was conducted with letters. I imagine Doel as a man who could remember every book in his shop — he could pick the perfect volume for a customer from a dusty bookshelf. I know it’s great that my independent bookstore has a database, and that my longing for pre - Amazon, pre-Kindle era is emotional talk, but the fact of the matter is Marks & Co. is no longer in business. The sweetness of this book is marked with sadness.
This is a book to take to a park on a nice spring day and read in one go (It’s only ninety-five pages!). If you’re anything like me, you might have to put it down from time to time and sigh, and smile.
24. Why does Hanff write the first letter
A. To place an advertisement.
B. To inquire about cheaper sales.
C. To try to get a book published.
D. To search for less accessible books.
25. What does “they’re off” underlined in paragraph 3 mean
A. They support each other.
B. They start a business together.
C. They travel to each other’s cities.
D. They begin their correspondence.
26. What feeling does the author express about Marks & Co.
A. Regret over its closure.
B. Worry about its inefficiency.
C. Happiness about its expansion.
D. Appreciation for its existence.
27. What is the purpose of this text
A. To honor a friendship.
B. To recommend a book.
C. To remember a historical site.
D. To reflect on an old way of life.

A new smart mirror that launched at CES 2024 brings the storybook phrase “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all ” into reality. Powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI), Baracoda’s BMind smart mirror claims to be able to determine your mood and, in turn, offer ways to improve it.
The smart mirror, which has already been recognized with a 2024 CES Innovation Award in the smart home category, combines AI and natural language processing to analyze the feelings of whoever is looking into the mirror through expressions, gestures, and tones. It then adapts to your current mood and provides light treatment sessions, guided mindfulness exercises, and self-affirmations (自我肯定), with the goal of improving your mood and helping you manage your stress.
Sabrina Ortiz, who has been under pressure lately, was able to try out the mirror in person at CES. The mirror asked how her day was, and she said it was going terribly. The mirror followed up by saying comforting words, switched the lights to a calming blue color while displaying an image of nature, and asked her to start a guided mindfulness exercise. In addition, when someone in front of the mirror said they didn’t feel pretty, the mirror gave them positive feedback, Ortiz said.
Aside from the mental health aspect, the BMind also has customized features like guided teeth brushing, skin analysis and coaching, bathroom water temperature monitoring, and more.
It’s important to note that AI and mental health can be a tricky combination, in part because of the potential for prejudice in the underlying algorithms (算法) as well as privacy concerns. Baracoda states that their platform stores health and personal data locally, and never shares it with any party without the user’s clear request and agreement.
28. What is the primary function of the BMind
A. To offer entertainment through storytelling.
B. To monitor physical well-being indicators.
C. To provide personalized fashion advice.
D. To deliver emotion - boosting features.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about concerning the BMind
A. Its working principles. B. Its technical difficulties.
C. Its wide recognition. D. Its complex design.
30. How might Ortiz feel after trying out the BMind
A. Connected. B. Encouraged.
C. Shocked. D. Embarrassed.
31. What does Baracoda’s statement stress
A. It respects users’ privacy very much.
B. It has trouble combining AI and mental health.
C. It prioritizes developing unprejudiced algorithms.
D. It works with other parties to protect users’ data.
D
Dreams are pure emotional and cognitive gold. Those often super-realistic, broken images and plot lines that can instantly disappear when we open our eyes, allow us not only to explore the themes and challenges of our day, but to step into the what-ifs of tomorrow.
Whether we remember our dreams or not, our brain and dreams are multi-tasking to the maximum extent while we sleep. Together, they are weakening negative ones, improving our stress recovery ability, cognitive function, problem-solving capabilities and our mental health, all of which explain the emotional roller coaster that can come with sleep deprivation (剥 夺). When we don't gel enough sleep, we're robbed of those invaluable sleep-dependent advantages that give us a depth of insight and emotional processing.
Not all dreams are made equal. It's the vivid dreams that take place during our rapid eye movement (REM)sleep, in the second half of the night, that really deliver when it comes to building our emotional recovery ability. The less vivid, non-rapid eye movement(NREM) dreams that occur when we first go to sleep have their own vital learning and memory-consolidating role to play, too. But if we haven't had enough sleep, we're likely to be short of REM, with consequences that can carry into our day.
According to dream theorists Robert Stickgold and Antonio Zadra, there are two standout benefits we get from our dream life. First, the narratives we create that allow us to travel in time —“to experience 'the thoughts, sensations and emotions generated by those narratives”—effectively rehearsing (排练) and actually experiencing the what-ifs of our life. And second, the space that dreams create where we can not only imagine possible events, but where we're free “to plan, to plot, to explore.”
In our virtual REM world, our brain searches through memories, making connections to help process daily worries and find solutions, so that once we've “slept on it” , we can definitely have a much deeper and greater perspective.
32. Why does the author mention “emotional roller coaster” in paragraph 2
A. To describe the fun of dreaming vividly.
B. To show why people enjoy roller coasters.
C. To highlight the risks of inadequate sleep.
D. To explain how dreams process daily worries.
33.What happens if REM sleep is reduced
A. More vivid NREM dreams. B. Worse daytime emotions.
C. Faster memory formation. D. Longer deep sleep time.
34. What do dreams help us do according to Stickgold
A. Forget bad experiences.
B. Make memories stronger.
C. Increase sleep time.
D. Practice future situations.
35. What message does the author mainly convey
A. Nightmares harm mental health.
B. Dreams strengthen mind and emotions.
C. REM sleep is the key to emotional balance.
D. Eight hours' sleep is needed to improve health.

Slow travel focuses on deep connections with local people, cultures, food, and music. It emphasizes the idea that travel should have a meaningful, lasting impact, while also supporting local communities and the environment. 36 The movement was to preserve local cuisine and support regional farming. Similarly, slow travel encourages travelers to explore in respectful and beneficial ways for the places they visit.
Slow travel has many benefits, including preventing “tourist burnout.” 37 Abandon the checklist mentality and focus on personal growth, education, and development. You don’t need to see every attraction for a successful trip; there’s always another trip. 38 Local accommodations are often less expensive and more charming than chain options. Additionally, slow travel opens up opportunities to make meaningful connections. By learning a bit of the local language and talking with residents, you can find experiences beyond the typical tourist path, like learning to cook with a local or sharing a traditional meal.
39 Live like a local by seeking out recommendations and hidden places rather than following a guidebook. Try not to see everything on a list — better yet, skip the list entirely. Welcome the unexpected, and take advantage of moments for personal growth, whether it’s shopping in a local market or staying with a host family. Finally, bring the slow travel mindset home. Think of yourself as a tourist in your own city. 40
A. Slow travel can also save money.
B. You may want to try some local food.
C. Trying to see everything can be tiring.
D. To slow travel, start with a shift in mindset.
E. The key to slow travel is living with the locals.
F. You can discover something new in familiar places.
G. It is similar to the “slow food” movement starting in Italy.

The boys in the block were going to have a roller-skating race next Saturday. They were divided into two teams: the Sunnysiders and the Shadysiders, with five boys on each team. Andy was on the Sunnysiders. They lost last year, so they were desperate to win this time. But Andy knew his short legs made it hard for him to skate fast.
One day, Andy was greeted by a pleasant “Hello” as he was putting on his roller-skates. He looked up and saw his new neighbor, Francis. “Hello!” he replied cheerfully, noticing his neighbor’s long legs. “Wanna skate with me Look at your long legs! Just the right kind to make you a good skater.” “I’d love to. You know, I’m really good at roller skating and I used to help my team win.” Francis said, his tone now heavy with sadness. “But I lost my roller skates and my mom just cannot afford to buy me another pair.”
Andy thought it was a shame for Francis. As a new comer, there were undoubtedly many moments when he must have felt lonely. Andy thought to himself, wondering what he could do for Francis. But he had to say goodbye in a hurry since the team were meeting in the open space on the corner to talk over some plans.
When talking to the team captain, Andy suggested adding another boy to their team, Francis. But the captain said “No” as the team knew nothing about him. Besides, the Shadysiders wouldn’t let them take on an extra player.
In the following days, Andy practiced very hard with his team. Then came the day before the race when he saw Francis on the sidewalk, watching them skate, his eyes filled with a sense of loss. Somehow it upset Andy, and his desire to help his new neighbor resurfaced. Then he thought of a way that could not only help his team win, but help Francis fit in.

He rushed to Francis, excited to tell him his plan. “Francis, you can use my skates in the race tomorrow! ” Andy yelled, eyes shining with hope. Francis hesitated. Noticing that, Andy explained that having him on their team would not only boost their chances of winning but also help him make more friends. Eventually, Francis put on the roller - skates and skated around, his talent instantly impressing the captain who was nearby. Struck by Francis’ excellent skills, the captain agreed to include the new boy. W: No, but he didn’t pay to go to the football matches. The club paid him a small amount of money. Fred was good at his job, but he did fall into the river a few times, so it was also full of danger.
M: Does anybody do Fred’s old job today
W: No, because the football club moved to a new stadium and it isn’t next to a river.

W: Leo, how did you get into reviewing music
M: Well, I’d been doing opinion pieces about songs on my blog. Then, when an article in the local newspaper said my writing was as good as professional criticism, I decided it was time I started earning something from it.
W: Was it easy to get a publisher
M: Not at first. I was too unknown to get anywhere simply by emailing an application to music studios. Instead, I found a magazine that was hiring writers and the editor agreed to take me on.
W: Is there a downside to your job
M: Well, I often work late into the night, but I don’t mind since I’m so passionate about music. I do miss having colleagues to chat with, which I did when I used to work in an office. Now my contact with my editor is mainly by email.
W: Would you like to be an editor in the future
M: Definitely. I like sharing my enjoyment of great music with others. And I might get to interview some big stars in the music world.

Even as an individual, we can make a difference to the environment. I live in the countryside. My garden backs onto some hills. Over the years, all the trees have been removed from there. This meant that when it rained, my garden was covered in water and soil. I didn’t mind the water — that soon disappeared, but the soil covered and damaged my plants. It was unpleasant to see many of them die. Then I decided to organize my neighbors to plant trees on the hills above our houses. Initially, we didn’t have the money to buy the small trees. Luckily, a cafe owner agreed to give us financial support. Since then, the trees we bought have grown significantly, so now we don’t get flooding any more. Once our little forest was established, we started to tend to bees. My neighbor is an expert. Now he is teaching us how to produce honey. You see, everyone can do something to make a difference.
