My Favorite Chinese Fable
Among the vast collection of Chinese fables, my favorite is The Farmer and the Hare.
It tells the story of a farmer, working in his field, when a hare ran past, crashed into
the tree and fell dead, with its neck broken. That night, he had a feast on the hare.
Overjoyed, he decided to stop working. From then on, he just waited for another one to
bump against the trunk. However, no hares appeared and he became the ridicule of the
entire state.
The fable illustrates the universal law that there is no shortcut and we can’t rely on
luck to obtain what we want. Instead, as the saying goes, no pains, no gains. We should
take it as the most important principle in life.
第二节:读后续写(满分 10分)
I knew I was getting delayed but decided to help. I asked the old lady to stay at a
safe distance. I cautiously stepped onto the road waving my hands wildly, expecting not to
be hit by an oncoming vehicle. Some cars and buses stopped and I moved further on to
the middle of the road to get the key. I quickly went back to the old lady and returned it to
her. She gave me a big warm hug and said, “I don’t know how to thank you and this is all I
can give you.” I felt so happy and excited to have helped this old lady.

Betty Reid Soskin retired at the age of 100 as the oldest active National Park
Service(NPS) ranger (护林员). She spent her last day on the job at the WWII Home
Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.
As an NPS employee, Soskin tirelessly promoted the stories of African American
people and women of color who contributed to the home front effort during World
War II. She briefly worked for the United States Air Force in 1942 but quit after
learning that she’ d only been hired because her employers mistakenly believed that
she was white.
After leaving the Air Force, Soskin worked as a file clerk at Boilermaker’s A-36, an
all-Black union hall in the San Francisco Bay Area. A talented musician, she and her
husband, Mel Reid, founded one of the first Black-owned music stores in the region
in 1945. Soskin also spent decades working as a staff member for officials in Berkley
City Council and the California State Assembly.
The newly retired ranger has been involved with the Richmond national park
since its establishment in 2000. In these early planning years, Soskin was often the
only person of color in the meeting room.
At 84, Soskin first joined the NPS in a short-term role, working to share the
understudied stories of Black Americans on the WWII home front. She was hired as a
permanent NPS employee in 2011.
“I felt such pride in the uniform,” Soskin said. “When I’m in a public place, I’m
introducing silently to every child of color a career path that they might not ever be
aware of, because they’ve never seen a person of color like me in a National Park
uniform.”
“Giving shape to a new national park has been exciting and worthwhile,” she
added. “It has proven to bring meaning to my final years.”

Recently, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu l only wore once from the bottom of
the cupboard. I remember buying them simply to match the ancient-style hair
accessories a friend gave me. It occurred to me that 1 had been trapped in the
“birdcage effect”.
“Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more
things to match it. Weeks ago, I was in the company of friends engaged in shopping.
One said that she wanted to buy a good writing pen to match the delicate notebook
that her sister gave her, so that she would fall in love with taking notes on reading,
and thus love reading, not just reading. I joked that she must have fallen for the
“birdcage effect”. But the friend said with a smile: “Why not use the ‘birdcage effect’
instead ”
For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向).
However, this can’t help but remind me of middle school, and I seem to have used the
“birdcage effect”. Passing by a bookstore one day, I purchased a magazine and saw
the call for contributions published in the magazine, so I started writing with eager
hands, and then I fell in love with writing.
After shopping with my friends that time, I began to proceed(继续做) to use the
“birdcage effect”. I bought a small fresh tablecloth to decorate my desk, and a
beautiful notebook to record my inspiration. When everything was ready, I started
writing again.
But how can we get rid of the “birdcage effect” in many things, and even use the
“birdcage effect” in the opposite way Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life,
but we can distinguish(区分) them. If it is not in line with the actual situation, it is a
“negative birdcage”, then we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart
of abandonment and separation. If it is a “positive birdcage” that motivates us to
develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and
motivate ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, you will find that the
“birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The application of the “birdcage effect” in life.
B. The necessity of using the “birdcage effect” in life.
C. The turning point of the author’s idea on the “birdcage effect”.
D. The author’s conflict with her friend over the “birdcage effect”.
9. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning her middle school experience A.
To recall her delightful days at school.
B. To explain the reason for her love with writing.
C. To confirm the positive of the “birdcage effect”.
D. To prove her knowledge of the “birdcage effect”.
10. How can we make use of the “birdcage effect” positively A. By realizing this
effect has two sides.
B. By promoting our personal consumption.
C. By recognizing this effect is not so terrible.
D. By guiding our acts to go with reasonable goals.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Getting Rid of the Birdcage Effect Confidently
B. Motivating Ourselves to Move Towards Our Goals
C. The Birdcage Effect: Influence on Consumer Behavior
D. The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage
D
Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively,
a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled
classmates, according to research published by the American
Psychological Association.
“It’s not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to
understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school,” said Carolyn MacCann,
lead author of the study. MacCann and her colleagues analyzed data from more than
160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27 countries, published
between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from primary school to college.
The researchers found that students with higher EI tended to get higher grades and
better achievement test scores than those with lower EI scores. This finding held true
even when controlling for intelligence and personality factors. What was most
surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic (学业的) performance, MacCann believes a
number of factors may come into play. “Students with higher EI may be better able to
manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, which can
negatively affect academic performance,” she said. “Also, these students may be
better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships
with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic success.”
Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and
emotion, may overlap with (与…重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects,
such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas,
according to MacCann.
However, MacCann cautions against (谨防) widespread testing of students to
identify and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize (给…打上烙印) those
students. Instead, she recommends interventions ( 干预 ) that involve the whole
school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and
emotional skills. “Programs that integrate (整合;合并) emotional skill development
into the existing curriculum would be beneficial, as research suggests that training
works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists,” she said.
“Increasing skills for everyone — not just those with low EI—would benefit everyone.”
12. What surprised the researchers most during MacCann’s
study A. Intelligence mattered more than EI for academic
success.
B. EI had an effect on learning for students of all ages.
C. College students benefited more from EI than pupils.
D. Personality affected academic performance greatly.
13. What can be a reason for the conclusion of MacCann’s
study A. High-EI students hardly experience negative
emotions.
B. High-EI students seldom develop social relationships.
C. High-EI students tend to easily focus on their study.
D. High-EI students have helpful skills for certain subjects.
14. What does MacCann suggest in the last paragraph A.
Equipping teachers with emotional skills.
B. Designing tests to identify students with low EI.
C. Developing special programs for students with low EI.
D. Employing emotional specialists to give training to students.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text A. Should EI be
taught in school
B. How can students develop high EI
C. Students with high EI do better in school
D. Good students do better in managing emotions

How to Quiet a Complainer(抱怨者)
Have you ever suffered your mother’s complaints about her aches and pains
Lengthy complaints will ruin the quality of your time together. ____16____ In fact,
there are some ways to get a complainer to stop without starting an argument(争吵).
Change the subject. Some complainers will switch topics if you shift the
conversation in a direction that interests them. If your neighbor is complaining about
the phone company, tell her about an unexpected call you received from an old friend.
If your coworker is complaining about your boss, ask whether he met the new
employee. ____17____
Summarize(总结) the complaint. If your complainer keeps repeating himself, he
may stop if you show that you’re listening. ____18____ Using “I” statements rather
than “you” statements show that you’re interested rather than trying to shut the
person down. Avoid saying the word complaining. Saying you hear their
dissatisfaction gets the points across.
Try to be honest. When you have things to do, tell the complainer that you must
cut the conversation short. ____19____ You can simply be honest, even saying you
need to move on so the conversation doesn’t bring you down – especially if it’s
someone who’s complained to you many times before.
____20____ When it’s someone very close to you–your partner, sibling, or best
friend–who stresses you out with a lot of negativity, it’s important to talk about the
problem with an open heart. Otherwise, if you bottle up your feelings and continue
listening to repeated complaints, you may grow angry or start avoiding the person. A.
Have a heart-to-heart talk.
B. Challenge the person to act.
C. But you may not be brave enough to stop her.
D. Just get them off the focus that they’re currently(目前的) on.
E. The problems start when complaining becomes a habit.
F. You don’t need excuses such as a work deadline or a dentist appointment.
G. Ask something like, “Can I tell you what I’ve heard and I understand how you feel ”

It was a busy morning and I had several work to do before the day became too
hot to be outside the house. As I was walking by the side of a busy road, I saw an old
lady, maybe in her 80s standing dangerously close to the traffic. Although my mind
was occupied, I thought to myself that I should warn her not to stand so close to the
chaotic(混乱的) traffic rushing by.
When I reached the spot where the old lady was standing, I noticed that she was
trying to get attention of passers-by who of course were too busy to take note of her.
She kept pointing to the middle of the road. When I tried to gently move her back
further away from the edge of the busy road, she said that she was standing there
because she had dropped her house key in the middle of the road and was unable to
open her house without the key. I looked around and no one seemed to be interested
in the two of us.
The traffic was busy on the road with commuters on two-wheelers and office
goers in cars as well as school buses rushing with school children. It was the worst
time of the day to cross a busy road without a traffic light.
