“I’m not a top student. I just spend the time that others use for fun studying,” said Pang Zhongwang, a 17-year-old boy from a small village in Hebei, China. Born in a very poor family-his mother can’t walk, and his father has bad mental health problems, Pang never complains(抱怨) about life. In 2024, Pang was interviewed on CCTV and he told the reporters that he would try his best to serve our country through science and technology. Many people want to know why he can succeed along the way.
Firstly, Pang has excellent living habits. Every morning, Pang wakes up early. He cooks meals, tidies up the house, and looks after his mother before rushing to school. After school, he quickly finishes homework and helps around the house.
Pang’s love for learning can also explain part of the reason. His true love for studying makes him forget about how difficult his life is. The ferry (渡船) teacher of the mountains
Wang Zhijun became a teacher at a rural (农村) school in Chongyang, Hubei in 1995. He has been teaching there for over 28 years.
Wang’s classroom is near Qingshan Reservoir(水库), and there is water on three sides. It is difficult for students to get there. So he buys a small boat to pick students up for school, and then he takes them home after school. When the weather is terrible or the water level is too high, Wang asks his students to stay and eat with him. Some students, sometimes, lived with him for more than a week when their parents couldn’t come to get them. The children see the school as their second home.
Wang has chances to go out of the mountains for better jobs, but he says he is worried about the children and has to stay. With Wang’s help, more than 40 students have gone to universities. “My dream is to send more students out of the mountains so that they can live better,” says Wang. And he is happy that some of his students have come back to their hometown after finishing their studies and become teachers like him.
