Few people will actually tell you what they want for a special occasion and most of the time your loved ones will insist that they don’t need or want anything! So, what to do Here are some tips that could help.Start EarlyStarting your shopping early can have many advantages. For instance, it gives you enough time to come up with ideas for what you should buy your friends or family members. Moreover, the closer it gets to holidays, the higher the prices go up. So, save your money by being an early bird.Make a ListHere, you can write down everything your friends or family members love. This can include food, hobbies, experiences, and more. Then try to determine how to use this information to find a gift that perfectly suits them. If you are lucky, you should be able to find good ideas in one of these lists.Think outside the BoxOften, the reason why you get stuck for gift ideas is that you only focus on the same kind of presents. If you are still coming up empty, it is time to get creative. You can find something your friends or family members can use every day. When in doubt, you can simply put smaller presents together to make up a larger, more meaningful gift.Gift an ExperienceIn case you are still feeling a little stuck, go ahead and find something that the two of you can do together. It may be a class, or anything else where you can enjoy each other’s company. In short, you will be able to give them the gift of friendship.16. Start your shopping early can help you _______.A. buy gifts in lower pricesB. change ideas very oftenC. read your friend’s mind easilyD. make a list of preferred gifts17. To enjoy each other’s company, you can _______.A. talk to your family membersB. find something that you can do togetherC. write down everything your friends loveD. put smaller gifts together to make up a larger one18. What is the purpose of the passage A. To suggest ways on how to make friends.B. To give advice on reading minds.C. To share a travel story.D. To offer tips on buying presents.BTraveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of conditions, Sophie Murphy noticed an awful tension on a recent flight from Sydney to Melbourne. She first thought it was caused by typical bad-tempered passengers. But as the flight neared its end, it became obvious that something was very wrong.A teenage boy with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat, regardless of the cabin crew’s warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land. The pilot was forced to circle above the airport, delaying the landing—and angering people on the already tense flight. As the boy’s elderly parents failed to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, Murphy, who had been a teacher for more than 20 years, stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane. She found the boy in the passage between rows of seats, lying on his belly. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favorite book, and his favorite characters. He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him.Minutes later, he allowed her to hold his hand—and then together they got properly back into airplane seats. Murphy asked for sick bags, and held them as the boy threw up several times. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly told him everything would be okay and that they’d get through it together. After the plane was finally able to land, no one was impatient to step off the flight as one might expect. Instead, calmed passengers—obviously following Murphy’s amazing example—allowed the boy and his family to depart first, smiling at them as they passed. His parents tearfully thanked Murphy for what she had done, and a doctor sitting nearby also let her know he had even taken notes on her expert way of handling the situation.19. Why was the landing delayed A. Because a family ignored the warnings.B. Because a boy refused to sit in his seat.C. Because smoke was coming out of the engine.D. Because the pilot had to change the destination.20. Murphy successfully handled the “awful tension” by _______.A. fighting against unfair treatmentB. calling on other passengers to join herC. communicating with the boyD. asking an experienced doctor to help21. What changed the angry passengers’ attitude at last A. The teacher’s efforts. B. The plane’s safe landing.C. The crew’s behavior. D. The boy’s improvement.22. Which of the following words can best describe Murphy A. Generous and careful. B. Patient and energetic.C. Wise and honest. D. Kind and cool-headed.CElephant Transit HomeIn both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats (栖息地). People are moving into the elephants’ habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called the Elephant Transit Home (ETH).Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and nurture baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. As many as possible are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd (象群).A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. Then the elephants are allowed to walk around, eating the grass and forming a herd. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants. At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connection with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other. The ETH is considered one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.23. What does the underlined word “nurture” in Paragraph 2 mean A. Set free. B. Relate to. C. Focus on. D. Care for.24. What do we know about the ETH A. It changes elephants’ habitats for the better.B. It receives about $125,000 each year.C. It helps to keep baby elephants safe.D. It protects 30 elephants every year.25. Why do the workers reduce human connection with the elephants A. To study them better in a natural environment.B. To help them make it in the wild as a herd.C. To provide them with more living space.D. To train them to stay away from hunters.26. What’s the purpose of the passage A. To introduce an animal protection site.B. To show the ways of wildlife protection.C. To explain the threat baby elephants face.D. To persuade the readers to protect elephants.DAs college sports continue to be hugely popular and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) brings in large amounts of money, people have restarted the discussion on whether college athletes should get paid.Supporters of the idea believe that, because college athletes are bringing in audiences, they should receive some sort of compensation (补偿). In fact, the NCAA brings in about $1 billion income a year, but college athletes don’t receive any of that money in the form of a paycheck. Additionally, people who believe college athletes should be paid state that paying college athletes will actually encourage them to remain in college longer and not turn professionals as quickly, either by giving them a way to begin earning money in college or requiring them to sign a contract (合同) saying they’ll stay at the university for a certain number of years while making an agreed-upon salary.People who argue against the idea of paying college athletes believe the practice could be disastrous for college sports. Paying athletes would turn college sports into a bidding (竞拍)war, where only the richest schools could afford top athletes, and most schools would be shut out from developing a talented team. It could also harm the friendship within many college teams if players become unhappy that certain teammates are making more money than they are. Those against paying college athletes also believe that the athletes are receiving enough benefits already. The top athletes receive scholarships that are worth tens of thousands per year. They receive free food and textbooks, get travel bonuses and free equipment, and can use their time in college as a way to attract the attention of professional coaches. No other college students receive anywhere near as much from their schools. While both sides have good points, it’s clear that the negatives of paying college athletes far outweigh the positives. College athletes have been compensated enough. Adding a salary would result in a college athletic system where only a few athletes are paid by some schools who enter bidding wars to sign them up, while most student athletics and college athletic programs suffer or even shut down for lack of money. Continuing to offer the present benefits to student athletes makes it possible for as many people to benefit from and enjoy college sports as possible.27. It can be learned from Paragraph 2 that college athletes ________.A. have earned what they are promisedB. tend to serve college longer when well-paidC. should make an agreed-upon salary by signing contractsD. prefer to stay at university rather than turn professionals28. People against paying college athletes believe ________.A. money should be spent on bonusesB. schools would be unable to afford itC. it could be harmful to college sportsD. students would value payments over achievements29. What is the author’s attitude towards paying college athletes A. Uncertain. B. Satisfied. C. Positive. D. Unsupportive.第二部分(共79分)第一节 选词填空(共10小题; 每小题2分, 共20分)阅读下面句子,请根据题意从方框中选出适当的词语并用其恰当的形式填空。due to break down in spite of be regarded as fight for engage in on the edge of come across move away from breathe in30. He knew there had to be a better portable drink solution and decided to innovate from something he saw in his own home: fruit infused (浸泡) water.Tom watched his mum make healthy fruit infusions but then struggle for a take-along option. From observing his mum and from his desire to give kids better drink options, he came up with his original model for the Fun Bottle. “I wanted to come up with a healthy, natural way for people to drink when on the go. A big part of my mission is to get people of all ages off sugary drinks,” Tom explains. The bottle is made with a strainer (滤网) that allows the great tastes and natural sugars of the various fruits and vegetables you choose to come through the water, without any of the seeds or skins flowing through.Tom is proud of his design and excited to be selling the Fun Bottle on his website and in stores, but this 15-year-old is most proud of the opportunities that Fun Bottle presents to others. It helps to provide healthy alternatives to sugary drinks; and also Tom donates part of the profits to the Organisation for a Healthier Generation (OHG).Tom has been awarded several prizes, but this teenage innovator remains humble. He is a leading figure in the battles against SARS in 2003 and COVID in 2019, winning him the worldwide respect. Every time I see the pictures, in which he is fighting to save people’s lives, I cannot help being moved by him. What impresses me most is that aged 84, he rushed to the front line of the epidemic area without hesitation at the beginning of the outbreak of COVID 19. Dangerous though it was, Zhong Nanshan and his workmates worked hard day and night to treat the patients infected with COVID 19. With their efforts, remarkable results were achieved and the COVID 19 was finally under control. Influenced by him, I have made up my mind to be a doctor in the future. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览
