When your ears feel itchy (发痒的), you might want to use a cotton swab (棉签), called a Q-tip, to clean them. But is it a good way And what do you know about the Q-tip
The Q-tip has a long history. In the 1920s, a man named Leo invented (发明) it by accident. He saw his wife trying to clean their child’s ears by using a toothpick (牙签) with cotton on the end. Leo thought he could make something better, so he created the Q-tip with clean cotton on a wooden stick. Since then, it has been a great success! Every year, people make millions of Q-tips. If you lined them up, you could go to the moon and back more than three times.
Although Q-tips were made to clean the inside of the ears, the truth is that our ears are able to clean themselves. Extra earwax (耳垢) usually comes out naturally. We can also wash it away when we clean the outside of our ears. Now, bags of Q-tips often have warnings that say “Don’t use them inside the ears”, because they can make earwax problems worse. Doctors also say it’s not safe to put Q-tips inside our ears, as they can actually push earwax deeper into the ears and even hurt our hearing.
In short, it’s important to use Q-tips safely and not to put them into our ears. Understanding our bodies’ natural way of cleaning can help our ears stay healthy.

At the 2025 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, a special performance named “Yangge BOT” caught people’s eyes. Directed by the famous director Zhang Yimou, this show brought a wonderful combination (结合) of traditional yangge dance and modern robots.
In the show, 16 robots made by Unitree, a Chinese robot-making company, danced with 16 dancers from Xinjiang. ① These robots, called Yushu H1 “Fuxi”, wore cute northeastern-style flowery jackets and waved red handkerchiefs (手绢). They had 19 joints (关节) at first, and 3 more were added to each arm so they could spin (旋转) handkerchiefs. The team made a special program. This program could make the robots move as the videos for the Spring Festival Gala showed. AI software (软件) carefully recorded the dancers’ movements in front of the camera. Then these movements were changed into command codes (指令代码). Engineers carefully adjusted them. After that, the program was put into the robots, and the robots could move. Besides learning from the dancers, the team also designed special dance steps for the robots. This made the dance look more natural.
To make the robots look nicer on the stage, the engineers added some small details. They put black sleeves on the handkerchiefs. During the dance, the robots took off the sleeves through the holes on their backs and put on new handkerchiefs. Then, when the motors started running, the handkerchiefs could spin. ③
