M: A diet soda, please.
W: Sorry, we’re out of diet soda. Is coffee okay
M: Just water, please.
W: No problem.

W: Tim, you’re going to talk about your project on How to Lead a Greener Life.
M: Well, I used to go to school by car. Catching a bus would be better, but there’s no bus stop near my house. However, I ride my bike to school now.
W: OK, and what about being green once you’re at school
M: Well, I realized that although all school paper was recycled and most of my friends used both sides of paper, we used huge quantities. And then it came to me that we should be sending in most of our work electronically. I’m going to recommend it to our teachers.
W: What about the school cafeteria
M: One school I’ve read about has meatless Mondays. It’s good to use local produce too. That’s something our school already does. But we still have machines with bottled milk, water and juice for sale. I think we shouldn’t have them.
Text 10
M: Researchers from an Australian university found that an average of around 2,000 plastic particles, which are about the weight of a credit card, are getting into our body through our food, drinking water and even the air every week. These tiny particles are smaller than five millimeters, and they originate from a variety of sources, including man-made clothes fibers, materials used in some toothpastes, or bigger pieces of plastic which gradually break into smaller pieces when they’re thrown away and exposed outside in nature. The plastic makes its way into our rivers and oceans, and can be eaten by fish and other marine animals, ending up as part of the food chain. According to the research, the largest source of plastic particles that get into our body is drinking water. The average person consumes as many as 1,769 plastic particles every week just by drinking water—bottled or from the tap. “Right now it’s almost impossible to stop this from happening, but there is still something we can do in our daily life. For example, every time we wash our clothes, an average of nine million plastic particles are released into the environment so don’t wash them unless we have to.” said one of the researchers.

Dear David,
Hearing that you are interested in Chinese music, I’m more than delighted to introduce High Mountains and Flowing Water to you.
This piece of music is associated with two figures: Boya and Zhong Ziqi. One day, as Boya plays the qin, Zhong Ziqi visualizes images of high mountains and flowing water in his mind upon hearing the melody. Coincidentally, Boya just intends to name this piece High Mountains and Flowing Water and the story has become a symbol of zhiyin in Chinese since.
I sincerely recommend that you listen to the masterpiece , because it is not just a piece of music, but also a medium to help us understand Chinese culture, which can trigger listeners' thinking about "connection" and "bosom friends". Besides , its relaxing rhythm is like a mountain stream, which can wash away anxiety and exhaustion. Last but not least , not only does the piece of music carry people's awe for nature , but also it conveys the joy of finding a bosom friend.
I'm sure you'll be fascinated by the beauty of this ancient Chinese music and feel the deep-seated friendship it represents. Looking forward to your thoughts after listening.
Best regards,
Li Hua

Possible version 1:
James took a deep breath, a sad look on his face. “Actually”, he said, “my mom doesn’t live with my dad and me right now.” So surprised were Ollie and I that we stood there, speechless. James explained that his mum had to be in prison for a while and he hardly ever got to see her. “I miss her so much”, he added in a choked voice. Hearing that, Ollie and I immediately understood his tough situation. “How about inviting your dad this Sunday morning ” Ollie suggested, eager to cheer him up. Though hesitant, James called his father with Ollie’s cellphone. Luckily, his father agreed to come, which made James and me jump with joy.
On Sunday morning, James and his dad came to join us. In the backyard of our house, we three families cooked waffles, French toast and hot cocoa together. It was a lot of work; however, it was worth the effort when we shared the food together, especially when we saw smiles on James’s face. The food turned out great and everyone had a wonderful time. James planned to send his mum photos from our brunch, firmly believing his mom would love them. On that special Mother’s Day, it dawned on me that it’s important to be as kind as possible to others because you never really know what other people are going through.
Possible version 2:
James took a deep breath, a sad look on his face. “My mum... she passed away during an accident last year.” So shocked were Ollie and I that we stood there, unable to utter a word. “I miss her so much”, he added in a choked voice. Hearing that, Ollie and I immediately understood his tough situation. “Terribly sorry to hear that. But how about asking your dad to join us this Sunday morning ” Ollie hugged him tightly, eager to comfort him. James seemed hesitant at first, but nodded his head after a while, which made Ollie and I jump with joy.
On Sunday morning, James and his dad came to join us. The backyard was filled with the pleasant smell of waffles, French toast, and hot cocoa. We all shared stories about our mothers as we enjoyed the special brunch. James spoke softly about his mom, reminiscing about their Saturday night breakfast-for-dinner traditions. His father had a warm smile on his face as he listened and everyone present had a deliciously good time. My gaze met Ollie’s and we both smiled. It was a beautiful day filled with love and memories, the party a celebration of mothers past and present.徐州市铜山区第一中学高一年级5月月考试卷 2025.5.22

What would be the best way today to protest against a war In 1937, Spanish artist Pablo Picasso expressed his anger at war through his powerful painting Guernica, which remains a significant anti-war symbol (象征).
Much of the painting’s power comes from its size, about 3.49 meters tall and 7.76 meters wide. It feels like it wraps around you, immersing (沉浸) you in its larger-than-life figures and action. And although the size and multiple figures refer to the long tradition of European history paintings, this painting is different because it challenges rather than accepts the idea of war as heroic.
Guernica is based on the events of April 27, 1937, when Adolf Hitler’s German air force bombed Picasso’s hometown Guernica in northern Spain, a city of no strategic military value, leaving a third of the population wounded or killed. When news of the bombing reached Paris, Picasso was horrified by the reports of damage and death. After repeated attempts, the painting was done in less than a month and then delivered to the Paris World’ s Fair, where it shocked the world into facing up to the suffering of the Spanish people.
On first glance, Guernica’s composition appears confusing, throwing the viewer in the midst of battle. The space is ambiguous (模糊的) with the changing perspectives and overlapping (重叠) images from Picasso’s Cubist (立派的) style, making it hard to distinguish their boundaries. However, there is in fact a visual order with figures arranged in three vertical (垂直的) groups moving left to right and central figures placed within a large triangle of light.
There has been almost endless debate about the meaning of the images in Guernica. When questioned about its possible symbolism, Picasso said, “It isn’t up to the painter to define the symbols. Otherwise, it would be better if he wrote them out in words. The public who look at the picture must interpret the symbols as they understand them.” In the end, the painting does not appear to have only one single meaning. Perhaps it is that very ambiguity, or the fact that cruel wars continue to be fought, that keeps Guernica as timeless and universally relatable today as it was in 1937.
24. In what aspect is Guernica different from paintings of its time
A. Figures in the painting. B. Size of the painting.
C. Its historical background. D. Its attitude to the war.
25. What directly inspired Picasso to create Guernica
A Response of visitors at the Fair. B. Guernica’s strategic military value.
C. Outbreak of the war in 1937. D. Reports of the suffering in his hometown.
26. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about the painting
A. Its theme. B. Its colors. C. Its features. D. Its symbolism.
27. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. A thousand Hamlets exist in a thousand eyes. B. Many people can make light work.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Too many cooks spoil the broth.
C
“Music will forever be humanity’s most effective and consistent source of inspiration and motivation, and, we have learned, music turns out to be our most solid common ground for establishing communication between teachers and students which is where education begins.”
—— Stevie Van Zandt
The legendary guitarist Stevie Van Zandt has called on England’s schools to use music to attract young people. He founded TeachRock, an online programme that uses music to help students access the curriculum (课程).
Van Zandt launched TeachRock as a way of keeping arts in the DNA of the public education system of the US after the introduction of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, with its stress on annual testing, academic progress and report cards. Now it is being adopted in schools in England in the Beckmead, which provides education for children and young people with complex needs. Van Zandt was visiting to see his programme in action.
Many of the students at Beckmead are among the most disadvantaged in the country. Some have already been in youth offender institutions (少管所). While providing them with excellent education and care, it is also critical that we attract them to attend. TeachRock has proved hugely successful. Additionally, research has shown that music plays a key role in supporting brain development, language, motor skills, social cooperation skills and emotional intelligence.
Van Zandt watched interestedly as 17-year-old Kerniel performed a song he had written, and applauded enthusiastically after a performance by a group of students playing guitars given by a charity. Some of them had not held a guitar until a few weeks ago. “It’s amazing!” said Van Zandt, “A lot of kids are just not comfortable with the accuracy of basic science or maths. They don’t see the reason for it. They don’t understand it.” Van Zandt believes in “meeting children on their own turf”, rather than conducting a one-size-fits-all curriculum. Kids come to school with gifts intact (完好的): imagination, curiosity, instinct, taste, opinions - and the traditional education is to have them leave those things outside the classroom.
28. What can we learn about TeachRock
A. It is an online platform for self-learning. B. It is only targeted at problem children.
C. It uses music to inspire children to learn. D. It keeps music in slower students’ DNA.
29. What might Van Zandt agree with according to the text
A. Music should have a place in education.
B. Music keeps children from breaking the law.
C. Music outweighs science in school curriculum.
D. All children can learn to play the guitar quickly.
30. What does “meeting children on their own turf” in the last paragraph mean
A. All students should be taught in the same way.
B. Education should be tailored to students’ needs.
C. Students should attend lessons at their own home.
D Science and maths should be removed from curriculum.
31. Which column may the text appear in a newspaper
A. Education. B. Culture. C. Science. D. Music.
D
I want to be successful. That person is successful. So that person can teach me how to be successful. This theory helps explain the springing up of podcasts, books and speeches devoted to the secrets of high performance. It is one reason why executive-leadership courses draw on case studies from well beyond business: politics, the army and even the Roman Empire. And it has been much apparent before and during the Olympics, which end in Paris on August 11th.
Executives (主管) attend events in which Olympians describe what makes them successful. What can CEOs learn from the world’s best athletes Actually, there are threads that connect sporting success and business success. Getting to the games requires 100% commitment and hard work. Sporting excellence rests on the efforts of multiple people, not just a single individual. The people on the platform in Paris are competitive and resilient (适应力强). It is true that all these things are helpful in the workplace.
If some of the similarities between sports and the workplace are cliché (老生常谈), many of the differences are too big to be helpful. Sporting events have clear standards for winning or losing; most jobs lack this. A four-year Olympic cycle building to a match that may last only seconds has few similar examples in business.
The athletes who win medals at the games are blessed not just with determination but also natural gifts. The job of managers is partly to discover such superstars, but their real task is getting the best out of a workforce whose talents will vary and whose jobs will not depend as heavily on genetics (遗传). “As soon as I saw that kid log on, I knew he was special.” are words you do not often hear.
Whether similarities or differences, these are not really why people listen to the podcasts or turn up at the events. They want a simple recipe for success. And they want to hear what it is like to run faster or jump higher than anyone else. They want to hear stories that can have no practical value back in the office. If they can pretend it’s good for their career, so much the better.
32. Why does the author mention the theory in Paragraph 1
A. To prove a point. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To present a fact. D. To explain a concept.
33. Why do CEOs turn to Olympians
A. To seek business partners. B. To get the secrets to success.
C. To prove the truth of a theory. D. To expand their social circle.
34. What is the author’s attitude to learning from Olympians
A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. What can Olympians teach CEOs B. How do CEOs differ from Olympians
C. What is the recipe for business success D. Why are Olympians more successful than CEOs

Emptiness
Have you ever felt like floating in a vast ocean with no land in sight ____36____ But it’s not just about physical loneliness or a lack of excitement. It is typically emptiness—the result of feeling unaccomplished in life.
____37____ This feeling can appear at various stages and is often linked to major life events or changes. In our teens, we’re figuring out who we are and where we fit in the world. It’s a time of great discovery but also confusion. This can sometimes lead to a strong sense of emptiness as we struggle with our identity. Moving into early adulthood, many people experience the so-called “quarter-life crisis”. The pressures of establishing a career, maintaining relationships, and learning to be an adult can make this feeling stronger. ____38____ In fact, it might become even stronger due to factors such as experiencing a bottleneck in career or children leaving home. Entering into later life brings its own set of challenges too. Retiring from work, losing loved ones or facing health problems could all contribute to this emotion.
It’s important to admit that feeling empty occasionally is a part of the human experience. ____39____ One tried-and-true method is mindfulness meditation (正念冥想). Research shows that it can help us become more aware of our feelings and thoughts, making it easier for us to deal with them instead of feeling lost. Remember, though, it’s important not to contain these feelings. ____40____ Besides, participating in activities that bring joy can also relieve feelings of emptiness. These might include creative activities like painting or writing, physical activities such as hiking or cycling, or simply spending time with loved ones.
In truth, managing an “empty feeling” takes practice and patience but believe me when I say—it gets better!
A. Sharing experiences within a group can lead to a sense of belonging.
B. Besides, understanding and addressing this “empty feeling” isn’t easy
C. People commonly describe this feeling as a sense of loneliness or boredom.
D. In our journey through life, it’s not uncommon to experience periods of emptiness.
E. However if this feeling persists and negatively affects your life, it’s advisable to seek help.
F. Emotions are there for a reason and recognizing them is a critical part of the healing process.
G. As I reflect on middle age, it’s clear that empty feelings don’t simply disappear as we grow older.

I had no idea how confusing Mother’s Day could be until something happened during Writing Club at the library. We had different topics to write about each week. And the third week, our librarian, Mr. Sendak, put lots of cookbooks on every table.
“Mother’s Day falls on this Sunday. Today we’re going to write down food memories related to your mothers,” said Mr. Sendak. “Let’s see if the pictures in these cookbooks remind you of anything your mother cooked and you especially loved to eat or drink growing up. Write your story down.”
“Yes! I love it!” my friend Ollie said, grabbing a book of chocolate recipes.
I started turning the pages of a breakfast cookbook and stopped at a recipe for Belgian waffles (华夫饼).
“Oooh!” I said, “This makes me think of the time my mum made fancy blueberry waffles for my fifth birthday and my parents let me pour my own syrup.”
“Syrup is the best part!” said James, a new friend that Ollie and I had met at Writing Club.
“I’m going to write about that!” I smiled.
“Chocolate cake” Ollie said as he looked through the pictures. “Oh! Mexican hot chocolate. That’s it! I remember the first time I was in hospital! I was so sad and sore until my mum made me some special hot cocoa. I’m going to write about that.”
James just kept flipping through the books.
“What’s your favorite food memory ” I asked.
James shrugged (耸肩).
“Come on,” said Ollie. “We want to hear about it!”
James sighed, put down his cookbook, and said, “Saturday night was always breakfast-for-dinner night. My mum used to make the best French toast with apple butter.”
“Yum!” I said, “How did you start that tradition ”
But James didn’t answer. He just picked up his pen and started to write.
Half an hour later, when it was time to say goodbye, Ollie said, “Hey, I just had a genius idea. If we put our waffles, French toast, and hot- cocoa recipes together, we could make an amazing Mother’s Day brunch for our mothers.”
“Yes!” I shouted loudly, “I bet my parents will let us have it in our backyard (后院). Do come with your mothers.”
James put his backpack over his shoulder. “Sorry. I’m busy that day.”
Ollie laughed. “Do you know the future We didn’t even choose a day yet.”
James took a deep breath, a sad look on his face.
