Yu Xiaopeng works at a reserve (自然保护区) in Yancheng, Jiangsu. His work is domesticating (驯养) the milu deer.
Each morning, Yu gets up early and walks around with a notebook (笔记本). He feeds (喂) the milu deer and writes down how much water and food they have for each day. He looks after them well to make sure they are healthy (健康的). For Yu, the milu deer are like his children.
Yu knows the milu deer well. He can tell where they like to go and what they love to eat. Yu thinks his work of domesticating the milu deer can bring more visitors to the reserve. “They can get close to the cute animals and learn more about them, ” Yu said. “It can also help protect (保护) them. ”
The milu deer are a symbol of good luck in China. But they got into great danger in the 1980s because there were not many of them at that time. In 1986, the reserve welcomed 39 milu deer from the UK. Thanks to people like Yu, there are over 7,000 milu deer in China now. This shows the hard work of all the workers at the reserve. Their hard work achieved great success (取得了很大成就). Yu wants to keep doing the job and call on more people to protect the milu deer.
