Anyone who has ever been around a cat for any length of time well knows cats have great patience. Yikes! My cat changed a lot recently. In just a week or so, my calm, adorable, long-haired Rusty turned into the attack cat of the century! It was not what I needed at all! Wasn’t the rest of my life in enough chaos Changes at work. Changes in relationships. I already felt as if my entire world was falling apart. Nothing calmed my cat down either. He ran and dove in every direction. He broke every single rule we had ever had to keep peace in the home we shared. He’d turned into a cat I’d never met before! Finally, I took Rusty to the vet. After careful examination, the vet shook his head, “Not a thing is wrong with him, Miss. He’s doing great.”
“No,” I argued with anger, “he’s not great. He’s absolutely awful.” I almost burst into tears.
Then the vet asked the most insightful question that anyone had ever asked me — at least, anytime recently. “So,” said my cat’s kindhearted vet, “how has your life been going lately ” Shock shot through me. “Me ” I stared at him, essentially speechless, ready to throw myself into his cat-cradling arms. I managed a relatively coherent response. “Not so good,” I admitted.
The kindly cat doctor nodded and replied, “Just what I suspected. Often, the human-to-cat bond is so powerful that a perfectly healthy cat will act out in response to his human’s emotional stresses.”
I nodded along, thinking. “Yes. yes. yes. yes. yes!”
“Do your best,” our doctor told us both, “to be calm, patient and kind. Once you’re doing better, then Rusty will do better, too.”
That day turned us around. I got some good, professional treatment for my super stressors.
Rusty got a kinder, gentler me with more ear touches and back petting.

A. Relieved and calm. B. Amused and proud.

Fear is often seen as a negative emotion, yet children are drawn to activities that mix joy with fear to create thrills. This phenomenon is known as“risky play”, which is universally assumed to boost children’s mental health. Young mammals (哺乳动物), from baby goats jumping off rocks and young bears sliding down snowy hills to monkeys swinging on tree branches, engage in similar behaviors.
Scientists believe this nature serves a deeper purpose. In an experiment, they designed ways to stop young rats from playing during an important growth stage. Rats raised in this way grow up emotionally underdeveloped. When placed in a novel environment, they overreact to fear and fail to adapt. Such findings support that play teaches young mammals to control fear and anger. Psychologist Ronald Stolberg notes that modern children, surrounded by overscheduling and screen time, could benefit from risky play where they experience manageable emotions, learning to stay calm in challenging situations.
However, not all forms of risky play offer the same benefits. Children are more likely to benefit from self - directed play than structured sports. The competitive nature of structured sports often pressures children into taking risks that may lead to injuries they might otherwise avoid. Instead, unstructured play permits children to set their own limits by carefully judging their abilities, such as asking themselves questions like “Are these branches strong enough to hold me if I climb higher ”and “Am I ready to jump from the high diving board ” By making these choices, children learn to weigh risks.
Designers are now recognizing the value of risky play. Traditional playgrounds often follow fixed equipment. However, play designer Nathan Schleicher believes playgrounds should be places where children create their own stories. “The predictable is not all that fun! Adventure is found in the unknown, ” he said. Schleicher suggests the design include a broad range of natural elements — like trees, rocks, and uneven terrains (地形) — to inspire children to make their own paths.
Whether it’s a little jump, a shaky climb, or a deep breath before a daring move, risky play is just another way kids learn to dance with the world.
8. What does paragraph 1 mainly discuss about risky play
A. Its universal nature. B. Its biological origin.
C. Its psychological effect. D. Its practical application.
9. What conclusion can be drawn from the experiment
A. Predictable environments enhance learning.
B. Fear and anger are important emotions.
C. Play contributes to emotional control.
D. The difficulty of risky play varies.
10. Why does self-directed play benefit children more
A. It encourages competition among children.
B. It provides a more structured environment.
C. It offers more equipment and resources.
D. It allows them to take thoughtful risks.
11. What best describes Nathan Schleicher’s playground design
A. Low-cost. B. Open-ended. C. High-tech. D. Rule-centered.
D
The human mind is astonishing. We can solve complex problems, perform calculations, create art, and process language effortlessly. We humans are the smartest of all, or so we think.
However, recent studies reveal how easily context can mislead us. Consider the Müller-Lyer illusion (错觉): equal-length lines look different if one has outward-pointing arrows and the other has inward-pointing arrows. Similarly, three identical-sized runners positioned along a visual path seem to vary in size.
Before you conclude that being fooled is reserved only for visual illusions, let me give the example of Belinda: an outspoken philosophy student, deeply concerned with sustainability, biodiversity, and global warming. Is Belinda more likely: a) a top student, or b) a top student and vegetarian Many people choose the second, because the context of being vegetarian seems to fit the image of someone deeply concerned with sustainability. But statistically, the first is more likely. There are always more top students than vegetarian top students.
Yet for all its potential to trick, context more often serves as our mental shortcut to efficient understanding. Rather than memorizing every possible meaning of words and sentence patterns, we constantly use surrounding information to fill gaps. As linguist J. R. Firth observed, “You shall know a word by the company it keeps.” For example, in the sentence “My daughter was ferliamated when she got a pet dog,” we can guess that “ferliamated” means “excited”, even if the word doesn’t exist.
This two-sided nature of context leads us to an important discovery about how our minds work. While we can discuss anything at any time in any context, it seems more likely that we talk about the things whose meaning lies in the same context. This offers exciting possibilities for understanding both the human mind and language itself — showing how communication depends not just on our thinking, but equally on how language is built to work with context.
12. Which image matches the description of the “runners” illusion
A. B.
C. D.
13. Why do people often choose option (b) in the Belinda example
A. Top students often make greener choices.
B. Rich details override their logical thinking.
C. Personal experiences affect decision-making.
D. First impressions lead to their false judgment.
14. How do Firth’s quote and the “ferliamated” example support the author’s point
A. They show how context helps word understanding.
B. They prove that words can have random meanings.
C. They explain why memorizing words isn’t a shortcut.
D They demonstrate what dictionaries can’t really clarify.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The link between context and mind. B. The complex nature of context.
C. Talk topics within the same context. D. The research value of context.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
One of my friends has a remarkable power to make the people around him happy. He does this simply through the power of his personality. He is extroverted, diligent, agreeable — all the traits attract a lot of friends. ____16____ He is excited about his work and speaks with passion about his family. He has a great zest for the common objects of life. If you want to lean into life more enthusiastically like him, there are some interventions worth trying.
Use the “as if” principle.
____17____ When you want to withdraw from social activities, act as if you were enthusiastic instead. Tell yourself, “I am going to get into this right now.” This will establish new cognitive habits that gradually become more automatic.
____18____
Norman Vincent Peale, a popular self-improvement writer, shares advice in one of his books: “Always be glad when there is trouble on the earth, for it indicates great things are about to happen.” Successful businessmen routinely use re-framing after setbacks by asking questions such as “What did I learn from this ” or something similar.
Pick your friends.
One of the best ways to become more enthusiastic is to hang around enthusiastic people. By doing this, you’ll take advantage of “emotional infection”. If you tend to withdraw, it may be easy to move toward people who do the same. But consciously doing the opposite can help you borrow a better personality trait from those around you. ____19____
Having a passion for life doesn’t mean that you can never be alone. In Henry David’s Walden, his description of waking up alone in a cabin by Walden Pond is a portrait of enthusiasm. “Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, with nature herself.” ____20____ You can make your head into your own cozy cabin, and make life inside it a little brighter.
A. Raise doubts about setbacks.
B. Redefine challenges as chances.
C. Look for companions who lean into life with excitement.
D. Faking enthusiasm is fairly straightforward and effective.
E. Likewise, you can choose to treat everything around as a pleasant welcome.
F. But I find there’s one characteristic of his especially winning: his enthusiasm.
G. If people act more extroverted in general, they do succeed and become happier.

Final exams were approaching, and everyone in school was excited about vacations. We were dreaming of far-off destinations, our minds filled with images of thrilling adventures.
After school on Friday, on my way home, I ran into my best friend. Enthusiastic about the vacations, I asked him about his plans. His eyes twinkled brightly as he replied, “I’m going to visit my grandparents with my parents for a week.”
“Don’t you ever get tired of going to the same place year after year I remember, every year, your family takes 7 to 10 days off to head back to your native village,” I asked, raising an eyebrow in curiosity.
“Oh, not at all! That’s the absolute best time of the year for me! Being with my folks in the village is just amazing.” His face beamed with joy as he continued, "In the village, I get to meet so many wonderful people, and everyone there is so kind and welcoming. Our neighborhood crew is tight! We’re always hanging out together, you know Just running wild, chilling by the lake, or bouncing between each other’s houses. Honestly, I know what really matters about these village trips. It’s not the cool places we see — it’s spending time with the people I love. That’s the real treasure of life.”
His words made me recall my own grandparents. I realized I hadn’t seen them for years. But still, it’s a pleasure to be there. … we had big long gardens and a big multi-story house.
The next day over breakfast, I mustered up the courage and asked my parents, “Can we visit grandparents this summer after exams ” Dad replied hesitantly, “Oh, that’s unexpected.” Mom was surprised. “Well, you know it gets really hot there this time of year.” After a short pause, Dad gave a small sigh and met my hopeful gaze. “However,” he said, “if you perform well in exams, we’ll make the trip.”
For the next six weeks, I threw myself completely into my studies. My mom was amazed by this sudden transformation in me. Soon came the long-awaited exam results.

46. Dear David,
I’m writing to share a plan with you. As graduation approaches, our class intends to give a meaningful gift to our school, and I’d like to get your opinions.
After heated discussions, we’ve come up with two ideas. One option is to donate a collection of classic literature, aiming to enrich the school library and inspire the younger students’ love for reading. Another proposal is to plant a memorial tree on campus, symbolizing our eternal bond with the school. This tree would grow alongside future generations of students, bearing witness to their growth.
I’m eager to hear your thoughts. Which idea do you think is more appealing Or do you have any other creative suggestions Your advice would be invaluable to us. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
47. One possible version:
I rushed home and immediately handed my parents my score card and a note with “PLEASE.” This time, they instantly agreed. The next day, we set out for our hometown. Every one, be it relatives or neighbors, greeted us with smiles, treating me like their own son. Every day brought new happiness –- digging with Grandpa in the garden, playing games with cousins until sunset, roaming around familiar streets with loved ones and even joining the local kids in their football matches. The days passed as we had a wonderful time together. Truth be told, everything was more fun in a big family. When departure day came, my heart ached.
I saw my mom had tears in her eyes when leaving them. She wiped them away and smiled, saying, “I didn’t realize how much I missed the village until now. It’s not just a place; it’s where our roots are.” As we drove away, I felt a mix of excitement and nostalgia. I realized that the real adventure wasn’t about exploring far-off places but about reconnecting with family and our heritage. This trip wasn’t just for me; it was a reminder for all of us that family is the true treasure of life. From then on, visiting Grandma and Grandpa became our annual tradition, a time to cherish love, laughter, and the simple joys of being together.
