Four Dog-Friendly Vacation Spots to Explore
Vacations mean family time and if you are a pet parent, there’s no reason why you can’t take your dog with you. There are four dog-friendly vacation destinations in the US.
Portland, Oregon
This city has pet-friendly trails (小径) and 34 dog parks and one of the most popular dog parks is located in Mt Tabor Park. After playing with the other dogs, you and your fur baby can walk to the top of an inactive volcano and appreciate the view of the city and afterwards, you can have a picnic at the nearby reservoir.
Bar Harbor, Maine
This island town may be small in size but is very close to Acadia National Park. There are trails for you and your dog to hike and you can drive the Scenic Park Loop Road to the top of Cadillac Mountain for a breathtaking view. Dogs are welcome on the park buses and also on buses in the town.
Austin, Texas
The city is open to pets as well as dozens of restaurants. The Austin Terrier serves dog-themed sandwiches and pizza. You and your dog can go on a hike or bike ride on the 10-mile trail at Lady Bird Lake or you can rent a kayak (皮划艇) if your dog doesn’t mind getting wet. Just outside the city, you can explore the woods at the Barton Creek Greenbelt Preserve.
Sedona, Arizona
In Sedona, you can visit Slide Rock State Park, a 43-acre space located just outside the city limits. Most of Sedona’s hiking trails allow dogs, so do campgrounds in the area. If you want to stay in the city, you can visit the dog park which has separate areas for small, large and senior dogs to play off leash (狗绳).

Kevin Carroll is one of the world’s leading scientists. Besides his work with people, he has designed prosthetics (假肢) for dogs and even a duck. And now he is working on Winter.
Winter, an Atlantic dolphin, is a playful two-year-old. She was found off the coast of Florida, caught in a trap. When she arrived at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, CEO David Yates said her condition was serious.
“The first few days, we really didn’t think she’d live at all. 24-hour around-the-clock care was provided by our veterinary (兽医) staff, our animal care staff, and our volunteers who literally watched her every second of the day,” Yates said.
Winter survived, but she lost her tail. Without a tail, she can neither swim as fast nor jump as high as a normal dolphin. “She has had to get used to swimming without a tail. We didn’t know if she could do that,” he said.
Winter’s swimming style changed from up and down to side to side. Veterinarians were concerned that this unusual swimming form might change the long-term health of her spine (脊柱). The vets, therefore, began to explore how to design a prosthetic tail for Winter. Carroll called Winter’s caretakers after he got word of the need for a prosthetic tail, and he offered his services.
Designing a prosthesis for a dolphin was a trickier process than Carroll expected. He said “With a person, when we fit a prosthesis, we have one long, firm bone. We don’t have to have it moving in every direction. With a dolphin, it needs to move along with her whole spine.” Teaching Winter how to use the prosthetic device (设备) also presents a challenge. Carroll will have to help her to learn how to once again swim up and down like a typical dolphin.
“It’s going to be powerful seeing her coming out of the water with that tail,” Carroll said. “I know she’s going to do it. We’re really looking forward to that.”
4. What can we infer about Winter from Yates’ words
A. She was slightly hurt.
B. She recovered sooner than expected.
C. She was treated attentively and watchfully.
D. She failed to receive timely medical care.
5. Why did Carroll decide to offer help
A. To enable Winter to swim normally.
B. To save Winter’s life.
C. To help Winter get back to water.
D. To assist Winter in adapting to a new environment.
6. What does the underlined word “trickier” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Smarter. B. More difficult. C. Quicker. D. More valuable.
7. What is Carroll’s attitude to Winter’s new device
A. He is thankful for it. B. He has doubts about it.
C He is uninterested in it. D. He has high hopes for it.

No pain, no gain, as the old exercise saying goes. But how much pain do you have to bear to benefit from training That depends on what you’re trying to achieve, fitness experts say.
For years, some trainers have instructed gym-goers that to get the best results, they need to train until failure, meaning until they cannot physically do one more repetition or exercise. Some recent studies, however, suggest this extreme rule may only benefit certain people.
“If somebody wants to increase muscle (肌肉) mass as much as they possibly can, then training to failure is something to consider.” said Michael Zourdos, chair of exercise science and health promotion at Florida Atlantic University.
Zourdos and his colleagues found that training until failure may build bigger muscles, but isn’t needed to increase strength. He said people who work out hard, but don’t push themselves to the state of being totally tired out, will still likely improve their health and fitness. “There is a difference between training for health and training for excellent performance,” he said.
He also said failure training often comes at a cost, since people working to that standard might be so tired that they have no energy to join their next gym training or two. In extremely rare instances, overdoing it can be harmful, leading to a potentially fatal condition called rhabdomyolysis, where damaged muscles begin to break down, possibly causing kidney (肾脏) damage.
James Fisher, a sports science expert and consultant in Southampton, England, said whatever your fitness goal was, the concept of failure training could be applied into your workout. But people should then rest the muscle group they trained for roughly two days, he said.
For people who have more experience, experts recommend saving the failure training for occasional workouts, or on the last set of exercises in their training. “It’s not meant to be for every person, every time they work out,” Fisher said. “This is a tough way to exercise.”
8. What is the function of the saying in the first paragraph
A. To give examples. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To make comparisons. D. To provide an argument.
9. What does the author want to show by mentioning rhabdomyolysis
A. The harm of failure training. B. The benefit of eating healthily.
C. The importance of bigger muscles. D. The necessity of training in a gym.
10. What did James Fisher advise people to do after they train to failure
A. Try lifting weights at once. B. Have their kidney checked.
C. Look for an excellent trainer. D. Rest for about two days.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. How Hard Should You Train B. How Often Should You Do Exercise
C. How Can You Improve Your Health D. How Do You Lose Weight in a Healthy Way
D
In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, DeepSeek has emerged as a significant player, attracting global attention for its advanced language models and innovative technological solutions.
DeepSeek’ s language models are designed with remarkable capabilities. They can handle a wide range of natural language processing tasks, from answering complex questions to generating logical and context-appropriate text. These models are trained on vast amounts of data, enabling them to learn the tiny distinction of language, grammar, and semantics (语义学). This extensive training equips them to understand the subtleties of human communication, whether it’s in the form of a casual conversation or a highly technical discussion.
One of the key applications of DeepSeek’s technology is in the field of customer service. Many companies are integrating DeepSeek’s language models into their customer service systems. This allows for instant responses to customer inquiries, 24/7 availability, and the ability to handle multiple inquiries simultaneously. By employing DeepSeek, companies can significantly improve the efficiency of their customer service operations, thus enhancing customer satisfaction. More than that,as new products are launched and services are updated, the system can include this information.
Moreover, in the field of content creation, DeepSeek offers new possibilities. Writers, bloggers, and journalists can use it as a tool to get inspiration, generate outlines, or even draft initial versions of their work. It can help in quickly gathering relevant information and presenting it in a structured manner, saving time and effort in the content-creation process.
However, like all emerging technologies, DeepSeek also raises some concerns. Issues such as the ethical use of AI-generated content, potential biases in the training data, and the impact on jobs in certain fields are being widely debated. One particularly notable issue is DeepSeek’s relatively high rate of “AI illusion(幻觉)”. No matter what questions users ask, it will never say“I don’t know” and will definitely provide an answer. If certain information is lacking, it will make inferences based on what it considers reasonable assumptions, and these assumptions may be incorrect.
12. What can DeepSeek’s language models do according to Paragraph 2
A. They can promote the development of words.
B. They can deal with language problems naturally.
C. They can generate context-aware text with logic.
D. They can understand the subtle feelings in communication.
13. Which is not the influence that Deepseek will have on customer service
A. Improving the efficiency of the reply. B. Reducing the number of service agents.
C. Enhancing the competitiveness of a company. D. Providing the latest product information instantly.
14. What can be inferred about Deepseek from the passage
A. Answers DeepSeek provides are inaccurate sometimes.
B. Writers and bloggers will be replaced someday.
C. People in all walks of life will gain benefit from it.
D. DeepSeek and other emerging technologies face similar concerns.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards Deepseek
A. Favorable. B. Indifferent. C. Disapproving. D. Objective.

Running Towards Growth
As a shy high-school freshman, just thinking about joining any school activity made me really nervous. I liked staying in my comfort zone, away from being noticed and the stress on performing in front of others. One normal day, when I was walking in the school corridor without a plan, a colorful poster about the school long-distance running team suddenly caught my eye. I was like something was pulling me to try. Even though I knew I wasn’t good at running, I got a strong feeling inside and decided to give it a go.
The first training was a disaster. As soon as the whistle blew, I had a hard time keeping up with the others. My legs felt so heavy, and I was breathing hard, I quickly fell behind, gasping for air, while my classmates ran ahead easily. I really wanted to give up, and my will to keep going was getting weak. Just when I was about to slow down, the coach, who had seen me struggling, came over to me. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Don’t worry, it’s just the start. Everyone has their own speed. Keep going at your own pace.” His words made me feel better. With new determination, I managed to finish the training, though it was really tough.
During the following days and weeks of training, I faced many big problems. Some cold mornings, the wind was blowing hard outside my window, and my warm bed was so tempting. Getting out of bed felt almost impossible. On other days, my legs hurt a lot from the day before, and every step was a reminder of the pain. But every time I wanted to quit, I would remember what the coach said. His belief in me gave me the strength to keep going.

46. Dear John,
Learning that you have trouble in keeping healthy, I’m writing to offer you some practical suggestions.
There is no doubt that health plays an important role in our daily life, without which one can hardly live a happy life. First of all, keeping a balanced diet is very important to our heath, which contains plenty of nutritious food, such as fish, beans, fresh fruit and vegetables. Besides, it is helpful to take physical exercise regularly to build up a strong body instead of studying all the time. What’s more, having enough sleep is another good choice as it can make you energetic.
I do hope these advice will be helpful to you and you will lead a healthy and enjoyable life.
Yours,
Li Hua
47. When the school announced a district-level running competition, my teammates were excited, but I was filled with self-doubt. I kept thinking about how I wasn’t as fast as them and how I might let the team down. However, the coach noticed my hesitation. He pulled me aside and said, “You’ve come a long way. Remember, it’s not just about winning; it’s about showing how much you’ve grown. Believe in yourself.” His words encouraged me to overcome my fear and accept the challenge. I decided to give it my all, no matter the outcome.
On the competition day, I started steadily. As the race went on, I could hear the cheers from my teammates and the coach, which gave me an extra boost of energy. I focused on my own pace, just like the coach had told me. Gradually, I found myself passing other runners. With every step, I felt stronger and more confident. When I crossed the finish line, I couldn’t believe I had done it. I had not only completed the race but also run faster than I ever had before. The feeling of achievement was overwhelming. I realized that through all the struggles and hard work, I had grown into a stronger and more confident runner.
