A monkey lived happily in the forest. One day, he found some red apples. They looked delicious, so he took one in each hand. When he tried to eat one of the apples, it hurt his teeth. It turned out that these apples were made of wood. Though he couldn’t eat them, he decided to keep them.
On his way home, the monkey found some bananas. However, he couldn’t let go of the wooden apples to get them. He was afraid of losing the apples, so he just walked away.
As he held the apples longer, it started to feel heavier. The more he looked at the fruits in the forest, the more he grew hungry and unhappy.
Finally, he gave up the apples and went back for his meal. He was happy again.

The mountains where I live are full of curvy (弯曲的) and dangerous roads. I was driving down one of those roads last spring. Days of the storm made the ground slippery (滑的) to drive on.
As I turned around slowly, I saw a fallen tree across the road. Then I stopped. I knew it was only a matter of time before someone driving faster than I ran into that tree.
I got out of my car and tried to pull the tree to one side of the road, but it was too big and heavy to move. I could do nothing. 30 seconds later, a white truck appeared and pulled over.
A young man came out. “You need a chainsaw (链锯) ” he asked. I said, “Yes!” He pulled one out of the back of his truck. He cut the tree into several parts while I carried them across the road and dropped them on the other side. “You never know when you’ll need a chainsaw,” I joked while my new friend smiled. I said goodbye and watched him drive off before heading back to my car.
Yes. We never know when we’ll need a chainsaw. We know, however, when we’ll need a kind and living heart.
