Students from the Riverview Inclusion Program travelled out to Sydney Motorsport Park for a meeting with an autistic (患孤独症的) race car driver Ben Taylor. The program works with ambassadors (大使) like Ben to help the autistic students realize their potential (潜力). The students were excited to learn about motor sport from a driver who is breaking down barriers (障碍) for autistic people.
Backed by a company, Ben also helped the students to understand that there is a world of opportunities for them beyond the school gates. Currently operating with 500 employees globally, the autistic majority company hires autistic people in a variety of roles, with a focus on IT consulting.
Ben shared insights (领悟) with the students that helped them look to the future and understand if they set goals and are strong-willed, they could realize their dreams and not let personal limitations define them. Over the years, the program has benefited from connections with ambassadors who provide valuable experience and guidance for the students, and Ben was great at providing insights around exactly that.
Ben enjoyed connecting with the students and sharing his experiences both on and off the race track. “It’s important to challenge traditional views on the autistic people so that people understand what we can achieve,” he said. “It’s also important that these children understand there is more for them if they are determined not to let barriers get in the way of who they could be.”
The company’s CEO Bodo Mann said businesses needed to think differently about offering roles to use the students’ potential to deliver greater creativity. “The truth is that the greatest difference these students have is that they think differently,” Mr Mann said. “People can think about this as a barrier to success, but it can also be the world’s greatest opportunity to access creativity and responsibility.”
4. Why did the students visit Ben Taylor
A. To learn driving race cars.
B. To get themselves inspired.
C. To experience the race car drivers’ life.
D. To unlock their potential in motor sport.
5. What can we know about the company
A. Its workers are mainly autistic people.
B. Its Riverview Inclusion Program failed.
C. It helps autistic people find jobs in various fields.
D. It is an IT company that only hires autistic people.
6. What did Ben Taylor expect the students to do
A. Share their experiences. B. Challenge autistic people.
C. Be aware of their limitations. D. Recognize their potential.
7. Which of the following can best describe Bodo Mann
A. Far-sighted and humorous. B. Strong-willed and honest.
C. Open-minded and caring. D. Warm-hearted and energetic.

In 2020, scientists claimed to have found a sign of life on Venus (金星): a smelly gas called phosphine that’s made by tiny living things on Earth. The claim was quickly stirring up disagreement. Now, another smelly gas is making waves in the search for alien (外星的) life — now turning to a planet beyond our solar system. Researchers announced on April 16 that they had used data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to discover a gas called dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the atmosphere of a distant planet called K2-18b. On Earth, DMS is mostly made by tiny ocean plants. On other planets, it could be what’s called a biosignature (生命印记) .
The University of Cambridge, which hosts several of the researchers involved in the discovery, was quick to promote the finding as the strongest sign of biological activity outside the solar system. Some media agents followed suit to publicize the DMS as a likely sign of life.
But scientists not involved in the discovery aren’t as overjoyed. For Clara Sousa-Silva, an astrochemist at Bard College who has weathered the storm of the Venus biosignature debate in 2020, she now watches history repeat itself. “The situation is disappointingly familiar. We did not learn enough from the ‘phosphine on Venus’ event,” she said.
Those scientists use JWST to discover gases in K2-18b’s atmosphere by analyzing how starlight changes as it passes through K2-18b’s atmosphere. Each gas leaves unique marks in the light, which appear as squiggly lines on special graphs. They compared these lines to 20 different molecules (分子). Sousa-Silva pointed most of the molecules aren’t structurally similar to DMS.
National Geographic contacted some experts to find out what to make of this new biosignature claim. Their views are represented: It’s an interesting discovery, perhaps even an important step on the way to discovering life on other planets one day. They stressed on “one day”.
8. Why did the researchers consider DMS as a sign of life
A. It is mostly made up of phosphine.
B. It is just as smelly as phosphine on Venus.
C. It was found on K2-18b that has living things.
D. It is mainly produced by living things on Earth.
9. What is Clara Sousa-Silva’s attitude to the new biosignature claim
A. Doubtful. B. Excited. C. Confused. D. Uncaring.
10. How did scientists identify DMS in K2-18b’s atmosphere
A By observing ocean plants on K2-18b.
B. By directly collecting gas from K2-18b.
C. By studying starlight passing through its atmosphere.
D. By matching it with 20 molecules of similar structure.
11. What can be inferred from the experts’views in the last paragraph
A. Findings from JWST’s are quite disappointing.
B. More evidence is needed to confirm the claim.
C. They believe that life surely exists on K2-18b.
D. They confirm the discovery a big achievement.

Each April tens of thousands of people flood to the heart of the Coachella Valley to camp, dance and sing at the music festival by that same name — Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Unlike what the name might suggest, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival does not actually occur in the City of Coachella, but has been held in nearby Indio since its founding in 1999. Both are part of the Coachella Valley, which is located in Southern California of the US.
But it’s worth learning about Coachella, both the place and the festival. Coachella itself was a product of the country’s railroad system — and a spelling mistake. Since 1876, the Southern Pacific Railroad had been laying tracks throughout the valley. A railroad employee named Jason Rector was tasked with clearing the trees in that area, which was known as Woodspur. During the process of laying out the townsite in 1901, Rector proposed “Conchilla”, which means “little shell” in Spanish inspired by the shell fossils (化石) that were found in the area.
The developers, in agreement, designed a brochure that would announce the opening of the new town. But the product they got back from the printer misspelled “Conchilla” as “Coachella”. Rather than delay the announcement, they decided to roll with the name — which the valley itself went on to adopt. The town, however, didn’t become a city until 1946.
These days, the word “Coachella” itself means the most influential music festival out there. It was the brainchild of concert promoter Paul Tollett, who was helping a band book venues (场地). One of their performances ended up at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, showing Tollett how the venue could be perfect for the large festival of his dreams. Hoping to copy the music festivals that were so popular overseas, the organizers started the first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 1999. It took a few years for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to grow into the phenomenon it is today.
12. What do we know about Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival
A. It takes place in Coachella. B. It is held in Coachella Valley.
C. It was first celebrated in Coachella. D. It was later moved to Indio.
13. What did the word “Coachella” originally refer to
A. Shell. B. Fossil. C. Railroad D. Nothing.
14. What does the underlined word “brainchild” in the last paragraph mean
A. Idea. B. Goal. C. Mistake. D. Honor.
15. Which can be the best title for the text
A. A Spelling Mistake Creating a Famous Music Event
B. The Development Journey of the City of Coachella
C. From Misprints to Music Magic: Coachella’s Story
D. From a Town to a Festival Ground: Fact About Indio

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Since I turned 40 years old, a strange fear of heights had controlled my life for no reason. Stairs with gaps, hill edges and high building views — all made me freeze in panic. It felt as if I would fall through these spaces.
Years ago my husband Ted and I took a trip to Sydney. I was sure that I could avoid all heights in the forests and the beach areas there. As I read about all the possible activities in the city, one attraction caught my attention. It wasn’t the Sydney Opera House or Bondi Beach, but Sydney Harbour Bridge—the largest steel arch bridge (钢拱桥) on the Earth. It towers over the water, providing views of the beautiful harbor and rivers throughout Sydney, as well as the city itself.
Photos of climbers at the top of its arch —134 meters above the water, fascinated me. For someone with a fear of heights like me, this was madness. Yet, driven by challenge, I booked tickets. Ted was shocked, “You’re terrified of heights, Marry!” “Exactly why I must do it,” I replied.
When I looked at the ant-like (蚂蚁般) climbers on the bridge, doubt began to grow. But refusing to waste money — or give in to fear — I joined a group the next day. We put on jumpsuits, locked away belongings, and practiced on a false structure. Focusing only on each steady (平稳的) step, I passed the test. “I can do this,” I whispered.
Next, we were to begin the real climb. We moved in a line and everyone was stuck in the line to keep pace (步伐) with others. Ted and I would have climbers in front of us and behind.
“Any last-minute questions ” said our leader. I asked our leader if it was too late to cancel. He said, “If you feel worried, don’t look down. Just enjoy the views!”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then, the line began to move.

【答案】Dear Alex,
As my first year of high school draws to a close, I want to reflect on the challenges and growth I’ve experienced. Adjusting to the workload was tough, but I’ve learned to manage my time better. Joining the debate club helped me gain confidence and make new friends. However, I sometimes procrastinated, which caused unnecessary stress.
Looking ahead, I aim to improve my study habits and stay organized. I hope to explore more extracurricular activities, like volunteering, to broaden my horizons. Most importantly, I want to maintain a positive attitude, even when facing difficulties.
How about you I’d love to hear about your experiences.
Yours,
Li Hua

Back on the ground, I felt more than proud of myself. I took off my jumpsuit which smelled of salt from sweat, its shoulders damp with tears. “Well done, Marry! You kept pace with others,” the leader came over and smiled, handing me a photo of the group where everyone smiled. I looked up and gazed at the high bridge, with a mixed feeling in my heart. Ted hugged me tightly, saying, “You’ve conquered the bridge, Marry!” I laughed, in disbelief and triumph. In more ways than one, I was on top of the world. I’d conquered the bridge and my fear.
