I was at the shop last night and saw a homeless woman with a trolley (手推车) full of her things. She was sitting inside the shop to keep warm. I went up to her and tried to give her money for something to eat, but she refused. She explained that if she had too much money on her, other homeless people might steal it while she was sleeping.
I explained that I just wanted to help her and asked if I could buy her something warm. Again, she said no. She thanked me and said how thankful she was that I could offer help. We introduced ourselves, and she said that when I saw her next time, she would accept help. ______ The lady taught me an important lesson: Not all homeless people accept money or help if they believe they’ve received enough that day. I look forward to meeting her again.
Walking out into the cold night, I met a homeless man who was freezing. I gave the money to him. I was glad that he accepted my help.

People have backbones (脊梁), and so does Beijing. Its “backbone” is the central axis (中轴线), a line that smartly organizes buildings in the city.
In July, the “Beijing Central Axis: A Building Group Showing the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List (世界遗产名录), becoming China’s 59th World Heritage Site.
Based on traditional Chinese culture, the Beijing Central Axis has many buildings and old places that help form Beijing’s old city. This axis is 7.8 kilometers long, running from north to south in central Beijing. This area includes 15 important parts, such as the Bell and Drum Towers in the north and Yongdingmen Gate in the south.
The building of the Beijing Central Axis started in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and continued during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). It still plays a big role in Beijing’s growth today.
According to Lyu Zhou, director of the National Heritage Center at Tsinghua University, the idea behind the Beijing Central Axis comes from the Kaogongji (《考工记》), a book written before 221 BC. This book explains how to plan a capital city.
The Beijing Central Axis shows the traditional Chinese ideas of “zhong (中)” and “he (和)”. For example, the royal palace (皇宫) was put in the middle to show the power of the king. Other important buildings were built around it to create a feeling of harmony.
“Beijing’s special and great order is made by this central axis,” said Liang Sicheng (1901-1972), a famous Chinese architect. The central axis helps to make the city’s plan clear and easy to understand. It shapes how the city looks and grows.
28. What role does the central axis play in Beijing
A. It shows different world cultures. B. It keeps people’s lives healthy.
C. It helps the city grow and develop. D. It decides how Beijing is built.
29. What do we know about the central axis of Beijing
A. It made Beijing the capital of China. B. Its idea comes from the book Kaogongji.
C. It was built all at once in one dynasty. D. It is only made up of buildings in the north.
30. What is the main idea of this article
A. The history and meaning of Beijing’s Central Axis. B. The life and work of Liang Sicheng.
C. How to build a new city in China today. D. Different famous world heritage sites in China.
31. What does the word “shape” most likely mean
A. To hide something carefully B. To break something into pieces
C. To make or form something D. To clean something well

①Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also a field of study that tries to make computers “smart”. John McCarthy a scientist, came up with the name “artificial intelligence” in 1955.Many things such as learning and problem solving (解决) can be done by computers, though not in the same way as we do.
②An unusual goal of AI research is to develop computer programs that can learn, solve problems, and think logically (逻辑地). At present we use the term AI for successfully understanding human speech recognizing human faces, operating self-driving cars and competing in some game systems like Chess and AtphGo.
③Math is the the most important language of AI. If we raise the standard (标准) in the learning of math, our students will be more likely to become successful AI designers in the future. We not only want bright students, but also need to attract (吸引) average students and give them the math skills which are needed to change them into AI designers. What’s more, knowing much about computer science is also necessary for AI designing.
④Some people also consider AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. Professor Stephen Hawking, a well-known British scientist, was not for this kind of technology. However, there are also scientists who hope to develop creative and emotional (情感的) AI which can possibly understand human feelings or create (创造) art. Many ways and tools have been tried to discover this fascinating field.
⑤AI is like an excellent tool that can be both helpful and risky. It can make our lives easier and solve big problems, but we also need to be careful with how we use it.
32. What do we know about AI from Paragraph 1
A. Machines with AI can think and learn. B. All problems can be solved by Al.
C. AI works in the same way as humans. D. AI has been popular for less than 60 years.
33. What does the article say about the future of AI
A. All scientists think AI is dangerous for people.
B. Some scientists want AI to understand human feelings and make art.
C. The speed of AI development does not affect people’s safety.
D. AI can only help people solve problems, but cannot create art.
34. The following is a school report. Which student is most likely to be a successful AI designer

Huang Xuhua, known as “Father of China’s Nuclear Submarine”, left us on February 6th, 2025 in Wuhan.
Born on March 12, 1926, in Guangdong Province, Huang grew up during the time when China faced many difficulties. This made him study very hard, hoping to use what he learned to make his country stronger. In 1945 he entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. In the 1950s, China started to develop nuclear submarines. It was a very hard job. Huang was not afraid and stood up bravely. In 1958, Huang and his team began working on the top-secret “09 Project”. They were not allowed to keep in touch with anyone outside, not even their families. Huang couldn’t visit her mother for about 30 years. When he finally visited her, she was in her 90s.
Huang and his team met many other problems. For example designing a nuclear reactor (核反应堆) was very hard. They couldn’t get help from other countries, so they had to do everything by themselves. At last, in 1970, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully, making China the fifth country to have a nuclear submarine. Huang didn’t stop working after this success. He kept working on improving submarine technology.
Huang spent his whole life developing China’s nuclear submarine, which encourages (激励) us to try our best to make the country stronger. Let’s build a much stronger China.

Do you know what a resolution is It’s a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people. (“Mom, I promise I’m going to tidy my room when I get back from school.”) However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year’s resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making solutions. When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps them to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.
There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you — will you make any next year
Resolutions are ___50___ made to oneself, most commonly as New Year’s resolutions aimed at (旨在) ___51___. They are different by kind: health-related (e.g., exercising), self-improvement (e.g., learning hobbies), and better planning (e. g., study plans). People often write them down or ___52___ to remember. However, most resolutions fail because ___53___, causing some to suggest having no resolutions is best.

Last month, I had a disagreement with my mother about study time. She wanted me to study more, but I felt tired and wanted to rest. We both got upset at first. Then, I made a list of our different opinions and talked with her calmly. I told her why I needed rest, and she explained why she wanted me to study hard. We listened to each other and agreed to make a schedule with both study and rest time.
After that, we talked more about my school life and feelings. I learned to listen carefully when she shared her ideas. Being polite helped us avoid arguments.
This experience taught me that understanding and respect are very important for good communication with parents.
