In 1945, scientist Maisie Carr stood a fence around 5 hectares of peatland on Victoria's Bogong High Plains.
That fence would form the first of Maisie's Plots, two sites where things were watched. They are still used by
scientists today and have recently been added to the Victorian Heritage Register. It's one of Australia's longest -
running ecological experiments (生态实验), and it began with a true pioneer who had to learn to ride a horse to
carry out her work.
Born in 1912 in Footscray, Melbourne, Maisie showed her scientific ability as a student and was awarded
scholarships to Melbourne High School and the University of Melbourne. In 1941 she was employed by the
university to research soil erosion (土壤侵蚀) in Victoria's High Country.
She set up Maisie's Plots — one at Rocky Valley and one at Pretty Valley — to see how cattle influenced the
plant life on peatland and grassland. At each site, Maisie fenced off one area to keep cattle out, and marked
another nearby area. The fenced and unfenced areas were regularly checked for types and amounts of plants, to
assess the influence of cattle. This led to stricter controls on cattle eating in the area, and finally it was cancelled
altogether.
Dr Manifold, Maisie's nephew, said Maisie's many letters showed her ability to adapt to a new and challenging
environment. "She made many cattlemen friends, but some cattlemen were concerned that the agreements that
allow them to use the High Plains land were at risk because of her, so there were disagreements too, which she
managed quite well, I think."
John Morgan, from La Trobe University, has been watching over Maisie's Plots since 1989. He said Maisie's
experiment showed what would later happen when cattle were not allowed to eat the plants on the High Plains
after the 2003 bush fires.
The next generation of scientists have continued to watch over the sites' recovery since the cattle were taken
away. And they do it using the same method Maisie used back in the 1940s, to make sure the data is comparable.
"No one thought 75 years ago we'd still be doing this," Dr Morgan said. "Generations of students and researchers
have been educated at Maisie's Plots."

The story about horses in North America told in several written histories is in need of an update, according to a
new study. After examining archaeological remains (考古遗骸) of horses, researchers suggest Indigenous peoples
(土著居民) had spread the animals through the American West by the first half of the 1600s — before they met
Europeans.
The findings line up with oral histories from Indigenous groups, which tell of interactions with horses before
settlers arrived in their homelands. Meanwhile, written European texts from the 1700s and 1800s stated that
horses only spread through the area after 1680.
Horses originated in the Americas around four million years ago, but by about 10,000 years ago, they had mostly
disappeared from the record. Spanish settlers likely first brought horses back to the Americas in 1519. According
to the new study, Indigenous peoples then transported horses north along trade networks.
To find when the animals spread, researchers examined the remains of more than twenty horses discovered
across the Western US rather than simply walking around the countryside on their own. The horses appear to
have been part of Native American culture. Signs of teeth problems on one horse and growths on the bones of the
head of another suggested people put bridles (马勒) on the animals. Certain chemical elements (化学元素) in the
animals' teeth suggested they ate maize, an Indigenous plant. And another horse had a previously broken facial
bone that had fully recovered, meaning it might have received medical treatment.
Researchers compared the ancient horses' DNA with that of modern horses and found that the centuries - old
horses had largely Spanish origins. Together, the findings suggest horses spread "from Spanish settlements in the
American Southwest to the northern Rockies and central Great Plains by the first half of the 17th century".
The findings also highlight the importance of Indigenous oral traditions in understanding history. "Our cultures
have been so misunderstood for so long," says co - author Yvette Collin. "Too often history has been told around
us, without us."
