Ancient City Wall

The Muslim Quarter
One of the highlights is its local snacks when you tour Xi’an. The best food destination is the Muslim Quarter, which has a history of several hundred years. Consisting of a number of food streets, the area has become a famous attraction in the city for its rich and authentic Muslim cultural atmosphere.

Two years ago, I completed a degree in Education at one of London’s finer universities. One night while having dinner with my friends, we began a discussion about what we wanted to do with our futures. My former flatmate had already found a position at a well-respected bank in London and advised us to be out there looking for jobs. Everybody around our table agreed except me and another girl, Nellie. Nellie and I were both at a loss as to what we wanted to do, but we were of one mind in that we did not want to immediately plunge（使陷入）ourselves into a nine-to-five job.
Nellie said she had a friend, named Susan, who had spent her gap year, the year between finishing university and beginning work, in Ghana. She had come back full of tales about her adventures and the wonderful people of the country. It sounded unusual and eye-opening to me, and I wanted to be a part of it.
Six months later, I was. I was offered a teaching position in an orphanage（孤儿院）in Ghana by a company called Filling the Gap. To be honest, on arriving in Ghana I had a few moments when I thought perhaps I was making the mistake of a lifetime. The orphanage was run-down and poorly managed. It seemed that there was nobody at the orphanage telling me what I was supposed to teach, who I was supposed to teach or with what materials I was supposed to teach.
After several days, the manager of the orphanage showed up and handed me a list with twelve names on it; these names belonged to the children to whom I was expected to offer all my wisdom. The children were eager to learn and seeing the look of pure joy on their faces came to mean the world to me. My whole gap year experience was nothing but positive. I can’t wait to get back to Ghana, and back to the amazing children I left behind in the orphanage.

Used electric vehicle (EV) prices have seen big changes. In 2022, when electric cars were popular and hard to find, some models were selling for more on the used market than they had when new. Now that there are more than 100 EV models available（可获得的）, resale values for some models have dropped a lot.
EVs lose about 49% of their value in five years, more than other cars which lose 39%, . Tesla’s price cuts for new cars and Hertz selling 30,000 EVs have affected prices. New models from brands like Hyundai and Ford have also made the market more competitive.
However, newer models with better batteries（电池）have held their value pretty well, according to John Helveston, a professor at George Washington University. Helveston says their value loss is getting closer to that of gas cars, but it’s not the same yet.
You can lease（租赁）an EV to avoid big drops in value or tech becoming old. When the lease ends, the dealer deals with the loss. Or, you can buy a used EV that has already lost value. Some say used EVs are now cheaper than used gas cars.
People look at the price when buying a car. New EVs cost more than other cars, but you can save with lower costs for gas and maintenance（维修）. An electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup costs much less to charge than filling up a gas one. EVs need less maintenance because they don’t need oil changes and have fewer parts that can break.
It’s hard to put a price on the environment. EVs make fewer greenhouse gases and don’t produce pollutants that cause health problems. Many people will enjoy the peace of mind that comes from driving an EV. Whether it’s worth paying more for these benefits is up to you.

More than half of Beijing’s adult single children don’t want to have two kids, even though the national policy allows them to do so.
The country’s family planning policy of the late 1970s restricted（限制）urban families from having more than one child to control population growth. However, a new survey shows 52 percent of those now-grown-up single children, who are allowed to have two children, do not want a second child.
Beijing has about 2 million only-child adults. More than 1,100 people from only-child families, aging 20 to 34, were polled（对……进行民意测验）. Only 24 percent of them said they would like to have two children. More than a quarter of them would choose a “DINK” (double income, no kids) lifestyle. Survey figures showed that respondents with a basic education wanted 1.1 children on average, those with a bachelor degree wanted 1.3, and those with masters or higher degrees wanted 1.5 children.
“Beijing has had a super low birth rate—less than 1.3 children in a family on average for nearly 20 years, causing increasing pressure on the country’s aging population,” Hou Yafei, a professor with the institute, said. Hou said that the top four factors that determined people’s desires to have children were “income, child care, housing and policy conditions”. “The government should encourage couples from one-child families to have a second child and should provide better welfare services,” Hou said.
The survey also found that people with higher education backgrounds want to have more children because they are more confident about their future.
To promote a higher population growth rate, some provincial governments have relaxed rules and allowed more people to have more than one child. In Shanghai, the death rate has exceeded the birth rate for more than 10 years, and less than 30 percent of only-child couples have had a second child.
