It’s the time of year when package thefts are on the rise, but when a delivery driver tried to drop off a package at a home in Rogers, a very good dog wanted to make sure that he didn’t leave anything behind.
“The FedEx driver dropped off the package, and Nixon ran up and grabbed it and returned it back to the driver,” said Megan Sand, the owner of the dog. She was at work when it happened, but the whole interaction was caught on her doorbell’s camera.
　　The video showed the playful dog grabbed the package between his teeth seconds after the driver left it at Sand’s doorstep, and then ran down the driveway with his tail wagging. The driver laughed when he saw Nixon dutifully bringing back the item.
　　Nixon is popular with the regular delivery drivers in the area. When drivers park their trucks at the end of the driveway, he’ll walk with them to the front door.
　　“Nixon loves to relax but is also incredibly friendly. The garbage men know him, and they often stop to give him treats.” said Sand.

　　There’s just a 1 in 3, 700, 000 chance that a person will be killed by a shark in their lifetime, but the fear is still enough to have swimmers worrying about being perceived as prey (猎物). Now, new research supports the long-standing theory that when great whites do go in for a bite, it’s a case of “mistaken identity”.
　　A team of biologists from the UK and Australia compared videos of seals swimming with videos of humans swimming. They then edited the videos to simulate (模拟) a great white’s vision—the sharks are likely colorblind, and they can’t make out fine detail—and found that from the point of view of the ocean creatures, humans do indeed bear a strong similarity to seals.
　　“Great white sharks are often regarded as ‘mindless killers’ and ‘fond of human flesh’. However, that’s not the case — we just look like their food.” Laura Ryan, the lead author of the study, said.
　　Despite their dissatisfying vision and spatial perception, great white sharks are highly visual creatures, and rely on motion and shadows when on the lookout for prey. To really see through the species’ eyes, the research team had to get creative.
　　 “We attached a camera to an underwater scooter (轻便小车), and set it to travel at a typical speed for predatory(掠食的) sharks.” Ryan said in a statement. The researchers then paired the recordings with computer models to simulate how similar people look from a shark’s view below the surface.
　　“I knew there would be some similarities, but not to the extent we have found,” Ryan said. “Specifically, I thought swimmers might not be as similar as surfers to seals as they typically aren’t involved in as many shark bites. However, the swimmers are also difficult to tell apart from seals.”
　　Ryan put it in a statement, “Understanding why shark bites occur can help us find ways to prevent them, while keeping both humans and sharks safer.”

　　It may not be rocket science, but researchers have found aerospace engineers and neurosurgeons (神经外科医生) are not necessarily brighter than the general population.
　　Researchers examined data from an international group of 329 aerospace engineers and 72 brain surgeons who completed 12 tasks online using the Great British Intelligence Test.
　　The tasks examined various aspects of cognition (认知), including planning and reasoning, working memory, attention, and emotion processing abilities. The researchers then compared the results against those previously gathered from more than 18,000 members of the British public.
　　The findings, which were recently published, show that only neurosurgeons showed a significant difference, with quicker problem-solving speed but slower memory recall compared with the general population. “The difference in problem-solving speed shown by neurosurgeons might arise from the fast-paced nature of neurosurgery, which attracts those with a born talent for rapid processing, or it could be, though less likely, a product of training for rapid decision-making in time-critical situations.” the researchers noted.
　　The researchers said the study was, in part, carried out to lay to rest the question of whether one of the professions had the intellectual upper hand. However, the team found few differences between the cognitive abilities of aerospace engineers and neuroscientists, although the results suggest the former had higher scores for attention and mental control—such as turning objects in one’s head—while neurosurgeons showed higher scores in semantic (语义的) problem solving—such as meanings of rare words.
　　“Essentially we think it shows that everyone has a range of skills, some people are better at some things and other people are better at other things, and it is very difficult to be better in everything across the board.” said Aswin Chari, an author of the study.
