Sorry rabbits, but giant tortoises(乌龟) are still winning the race of life by treating it like a marathon and taking each step slow and steady. Recently, the world’s oldest tortoise, Jonathan, has turned 191 years old. This extends his title of the oldest living land animal by another year.
Unofficially, there have been claims of older tortoises, including one believed to have been 255 years oldwhen it died in 2006. Researchers have not been able to pin down exactly what keeps them around for so long, but their slow-motion lifestyle may have something to do with it.
Giant tortoises have very slow metabolisms (新陈代谢), which means they burn energy at a slower rate than smaller and faster animals. Physiologist Max Rubner introduced the rate of living theory. The theory suggested an inverse relationship between metabolism and lifespan, which means that the faster the metabolism, the shorter the life.
Scientists have had some issues with the theory over the past century, but it did produce the phrase “‘live fast, die young", and it serves as the basis for more research on the topic.
The link between metabolism and longevity (长寿) is still not understood. Some scientists believe that metabolism is linked to the creation of free radicals (自由基). They are the molecules (分子) that damage cells and that increase as more energy is burned by the body. According to this theory, tortoises live longer because their slow metabolisms burn less energy. which means less harm to the cells in their bodies.
Theories on aging alone don’t fully explain how tortoises live much longer than humans, but their reproductive (繁殖的) life and size may give an explanation. Because of their massive hard shells and their geographic isolation (they only live on a few specific islands), giant tortoises have very few enemies to worry about.
This means giant tortoises don’t have to rush into reproduction to keep their species alive.
Each theory has its limitations and unanswered questions, but scientists believe that a combination of biological and evolutionary factors is what keeps giant tortoises alive for so long.
24. What does the underlined word “inverse” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Similar. B. Opposite. C. Clear. D. Unchanging.
25. What can we learn about free radicals
A. Free radicals can protect cells.
B. Free radicals increase with age.
C. Fewer free radicals lead to a longer lifetime.
D. The slower the metabolism, the more free radicals.
26. Why don’t giant tortoises rush to produce their young
A. They have little worry about extinction. B. They have a low reproductive ability
C. They live a long time. D. They usually prefer to be alone.
27. What could be the best title for this article
A. Live fast, die young. B. The way metabolism works.
C. Jonathan, oldest tortoise. D. Secret to giant tortoises’ longevity.
C
We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done
The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an EV into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC, “The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars.” These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.
These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita (人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.
28. What can we infer from the question at the end of paragraph 1
A. We should not be too optimistic about the future.
B. Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems.
C. It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones.
D. It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles.
29. What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in paragraph 2
A. payment B. income C. encouragement D. method
30. Which statement is true according to the passage
A. Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future.
B. Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future.
C. There are four main obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric.
D. Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”.
31. What is the most suitable title for the text
A. Total Electric Traffic: a Long Way to Go
B. Electric Vehicles: a Road to a Greener Future
C. Electric Power or Petrol: a Tough Decision to Make
D. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of Gases
D
In one horrible film plot, AI eventually outsmarts humans and takes over computers and
factories. In another, large language models (LLMs) of the sort that power generative AI like
ChatGPT give bad guys the know-how to create destructive cyberweapons.
It is time to think hard about these film plots, not because they have become more probable but because policymakers around the world are considering measures to guard against them. The idea
that AI could drive humans to extinction is speculative—no one yet knows how such a threat might materialise and no common methods exist for determining what counts as risky. Plenty of research needs to be done before standards and rules can be set.
Governments cannot ignore a technology that could change the world deeply.
Regulators have been too slow in the past, but there is danger, too, in acting hurriedly. If they go too fast, policymakers could create global rules that are aimed at the wrong problems and are ineffective against the real ones.
Because of the computing resources and technical skills required, only a handful of companies have so far developed powerful “frontier” models. New hurried regulations could easily block out competitors to the “handful of companies”, especially because these companies are working closely with governments on writing the rule book. A focus on extreme risks is likely to make regulators careful of open-source models, which are freely available and can easily be revised.
The best that governments can do now is to set up the basic systems to study the technology and its potential risks, and ensure that those working on the problem have enough resources. As AI develops further, regulators will have a far better idea of what risks they are guarding against, and consequently what the rule book should look like. A fully mature body could eventually take shape. But creating it will take time and reflection. 32.What does the first paragraph function as
A. An argument. B. An explanation. C. A comment. D. A lead-in.
33.What does the underlined word “speculative” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Theoretical. B. Common. C. Unique. D. False.
34.What is the harm of regulators’ going too fast on the AI issue
A. Competition in this area is prevented. B. The development of AI is restricted.
C. AI will be applied to a limited degree. D. The public will be misled about danger.
35.Which can be the best title of the text
A. AI: a Real Threat B. Don’t Rush into Policing AI
C. AI: Humans’ Friend or Enemy D. Time for Government to Regulate AI

Sometimes an act of kindness can mean a lot in life.
Three years ago I worked for a few weeks as a doctor in a new dental clinic (牙科诊所) at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was a rush driving to the new clinic and getting used to the clinical environment.
As it was all new to me, I took off my gold rings: my wedding ring, and one that was an anniversary (周年纪念日) gift from my husband. I put them in a tissue (纸巾) and placed them beside my computer. During my lunch break, I noticed the tissue and thought that it did not look very clean and threw it into the rubbish bin. I went about my work and my day went well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive. At the very first day at the clinic, I did a good job, busy but fruitful. So I felt more than proud. When it was time to get off work, I changed my clothes and went out of the clinic, thinking nothing of the ring.
Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that my rings were missing. I felt the heat in my body rise, my face burning red. I felt sick to my stomach. I spent an hour or so making calls, trying to find my rings. The first people I called were my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few phone numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she told me that the bins had already been collected. I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my rings. It mattered much to me and now as if I lost a precious thing and my feelings were beyond words.

根据标题“Are you a teen looking for help (你是一个寻求帮助的青少年吗?)”以及最后一段“The most common topics teens reach out about are relationships, anxiety, depression and loneliness. (青少年接触到的最常见的话题是人际关系、焦虑、抑郁和孤独。)”可知,这篇文章是写给青少年的。故选C。
22.细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“When you call or text Teen Line, we won’t judge you or tell you what to do. We will listen to you and work with you to find a way to improve your situation.
人工智能的行为,接着第二段首句提到“It is time to think hard about these film plots... because policymakers around the world are considering measures to guard against them”,下文围绕人工智能立法展开论述,故第一段的作用就是充当引子,引出主题。
33.答案:A
接着后面补充说道“no one yet knows how such a threat might materialize...what counts as risky”
34.答案: A
第三段最后一句提到“could create global rules that are aimed at the wrong problems and are ineffective against the realones”,即不能解决真正的问题;第四段提到“only a handful of companies have so far developed powerful ‘frontier’ models. New hurried regulations could easily block out competitors to the ‘handful of companies’...writing the rule book”,即阻碍了这一领域的竞争。 故选 A 项。

But about two hours later, I received an amazing phone call. The cleaner had gone through the bins and found my rings! I was so thankful to her, someone who had taken the trouble to go through the bins—which is not a pleasant task—to find my priceless ring. I worked at that clinic the following day, so I bought chocolates to thank this wonderful person. On arriving the clinic, my manager gave the ring to me. Unfortunately, I did not get to meet the cleaner as she was at work elsewhere that day.
Three days later, I finally got a chance to thank the cleaner face to face. After a tiring day, I was about to leave as usual when I met a cleaner by accident, who came to collect the bins at the clinic. With much curiosity, I quickly came up to her, and asked whether she was the cleaner who had found my rings. The cleaner, wearing dirty overalls, stood in front of me and said yes. Excited and relieved, I expressed my deep gratitude to her again and again. She just told me it was not a big deal. Finally, she left, wearing a bright smile on her face. And that smile would stay in my memory forever.
