Now people usually do a few things at the same time. Young people today spend about six hours one day on many kinds of the media (媒体) and on 39 things at the same time. This is the 40 why we call them the “multi-tasking generation (多任务一代)”.

At this time, much of the northern hemisphere (半球) receives the most hours of daylight, but it does not bring the hottest temperatures, which will come 20 to 30 days later.
Summer Solstice was an important festival in ancient (古代) China. As early as the Han Dynasty, when the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Double Ninth Festival were not as important as they are today, Summer Solstice was already celebrated then. Before the Qing Dynasty, people even had a one-day holiday on Summer Solstice. According to Song Dynasty, officials (官员) could have three days off during the Summer Solstice.

Nature is amazing! Take a close look at the world of insects (昆虫), and you’ll discover many unbelievable things. Consider butterflies, for example. They have beautiful, colorful wings, and strong, fantastic flying skills. On summer days, you always see them flying freely over flower gardens and wild fields.
But, did you know how butterflies become the flying insects It’s one of the amazing wonders of nature. In the beginning, female butterflies lay a small and colorful egg on a leaf or stem (茎) of a plant.
It’s hard to believe that the egg will become something completely different in a few days. It becomes a walking insect. This insect is called the caterpillar. It now has legs, eyes and a large body. A new life has begun. The caterpillar can eat, walk and see. But it is still not a butterfly.
Soon, after growing big, the caterpillar makes a cover for itself. It covers itself in the nice protective blanket (保护层) and goes to sleep. This stage is known as the “pupa (蛹)” stage.
After a period of time, the blanket breaks and a wet, weak butterfly appears. It now has six legs, a mouth, eyes and wings. Shortly, the wings fill with blood, and the beautiful, colorful butterfly spreads its wings and flies away.
After a few weeks, this adult butterfly lays her eggs, and the cycle begins all over again.
This is just one example of the wonders of nature. Look around the natural world, and you will learn many truly amazing things.

①Can trees talk Some scientists find that trees can really “talk”!
②Some trees use chemicals (化学物质) to talk. When insects attack them, they gives out chemicals from the leaves. This is like a call for help, “I’m being attacked!” Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others can call birds to come to kill the insects. Scientists hope to learn more about this, so that we can use it to keep insects away from crops like rice.
③More surprisingly, trees also use sound to talk. People can’t hear these sounds, but trees are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Some trees make noises when there is not enough water.
④Most surprisingly of all, trees have an “Internet” to give out and get information in a big forest. Scientists call it the “Wood Wide Web” (树联网). The fungi (真菌) underground help build up the “Wood Wide Web” among the roots of different trees. It is just like the Internet we use. Using the “Wood Wide Web”, trees can share information and even food with each other. However, it may also be harmful. Some trees may use it to take too much food from others, or give out chemicals to hurt other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to build a “Great Wall” to help stop these.
⑤Trees talk to each other in different ways. Now, scientists are learning more about these ways and maybe one day we will be able to “talk” with trees ourselves.

I’m happy to hear there will be an outdoor activity in our school at the end of this month. I like going on a trip to the countryside with my classmates. I can not only enjoy fresh air but also take exercise. It’s good for us to learn about nature.
To make the trip more interesting, I’d like to share my suggestions. Firstly, I hope to go to the East Farm because it’s not far. Secondly, we can do some farm work. We can talk with the farmers to know about different plants. After that, for lunch, maybe we can cook and eat the vegetables on the farm. Finally, we can make friends with the children in the countryside. I’m sure we will have a good time there.
I hope my suggestions are helpful.
Yours,
Zhang Hua
