When I was in my first year of high school, I had a terrible time when every area of my life was a disaster. I felt so hopeless and alone that I thought everything was impossible.
On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the side-walk toward me.Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in suc-h low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. I thought he'd walk on by, but he moved until he was directly in front of me, waited until I looked up, and then smiled.
Looking into my eyes, this stranger spoke in a quiet voice: "Whatever is wrong will pass. You're going to be OK, just hang on." He then smiled again and walked away.
I can't explain the effect of that man's unexpected kindness and caring! He gave me the one thing that I'd lost completely-hope. I looked for him in our school to thank him, but never saw him again.
That was thirty years ago. And I've never forgotten that moment. Over the years, whenever I see someone who is in trouble, I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of hope in the dark whereverI can. I carry things for people when they are too heavy for them, sit with naughty babies in the waiting room while their mothers are busy,or talk to tired couples at the checkout line or it could be anything.

New Year's resolutions(新年计划)are famously hard to stick to.Only 24% of people in the UK who made resolutions at the start of 2021 said they had managed to achieve all the targets they had set for themselves by the end of the year.
Given the difficulties that many people have in keeping their New Year's resolutions, though, should people wait a little longer before deciding what they'll be
Some people think the whole point of setting New Year's resolutions is that it's done at the start of the year and waiting longer just defeats (挫败)the purpose of it. New Year's resolutions are a fun tradition to discuss with family and friends and you won't be able to talk about it in the same way if you're all setting them at different times. Be-sides, the more you put it off, the less likely it is that you'll ever decide on what your resolutions are going to be. You can always set new ones, or change your goals, but it's important to start off with something. By the timne you've decided on some resolutions, you'll have less time to do them -which only increases your chances of failure.
However, there is another different voice. January is a cold and dark month. During the winter months, most people just want to stay nice and warm indoors, rather than try something new. People should make resolutions to lead happier, healthier lives whenever they want, not just on 1 January.Waiting longer means you'll have more time to plan and will have a better idea of what you want to do in the year ahead. This will result in better resolutions, which have a stronger chance of success. One study found that by 6 January, one in five people had failed to stick to their resolutions. By not rushing into it,you're less likely to get discouraged and give up if you haven't succeeded right away.
32.Why does the author mention the example of 24% of people in the UK
A.To prove they are hard-working.
B. To prove others set too high targets.
C.To show few people can reach their goals.
D. To show it's hard for most people to set goals.
33.What is some people's reason to set goals at the start of the year
A.They can have fun with earlier goals.
B.They may have a better idea of their goals.
C.They want to reduce their chances of failure.
D. They can show off their goals to their family.
34.Why do some people consider waiting longer to make new resolutions
A.They can think carefully about their resolutions.
B. They can have more time to stick tothe resolutions.
C. They can decide whether it is suitable to act right away.
D.They can find more like-minded people to keep the resolutions.
35.What does the text mainly discuss
A.Whether people should set goals.
B.How to set New Year's resolutions.
C.How to stick to New Year's resolutions.
D.Whether January is the right time to set goals.

Once there lived a smart boy named Eric. He always topped every subject in his class. However, he had one shortcoming-he never respected others. He was very rude to everyone and made fun of those who got less marks than him.
“My dear, it is praiseworthy that you get good marks, but it is very bad to be a rude person,"advised his father.
Eric replied with pride, “Being the first in everything is enough to make everyone respect me."
His father tried to explain, "If you don't give respect to others, how will they give respect to you As someone rightly said, 'Give respect and take respect.!"
“Dad, I do not believe in such things,” replied Eric.
However, Eric gradually noticed that in his class no one wanted to sit with him, and even his friends started to ignore him.
A month passed, still none of his classmates agreed to sit with him or talked to him. He tried to console(安慰)himself with the thought that being a good student,he had the respect of his teachers.
But soon he realized that it was all a delusion(错觉).
At the end of the school year, his classmate Jacob (who got the second position in the class) was chosen as the best performer of the year.Eric was completely shocked.
"Sir,why did you choose Jacob as the best performer I have scored the highest marks in every test!”Eric asked his class teacher rather rudely.
His teacher replied,“My dear, getting the first position doesn't make a person the best student of the class.Though you always score the highest marks in the class, you don't respect anyone.”
Hearing this, Eric was on the verge of tears.
"My dear, I know who is the best. Jacob helps his classmates and he gives respect to them and as a reward he is given the respect back."
