The Frederick Douglass Oratorical Contest (FDOC) is an annual event hosted by the National Park Service at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. It’s designed for students aged 6 to 18 to experience the transformative power of language by performing a part of a Frederick Douglass speech. Douglass known for his brilliant words and brave actions was the most important leader of the movement for African American civil rights in the 19th century.
Date: In early December.
Location: The in-person event is held at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., while there is also an option to participate online.
Participants: Open to all students in grades 1—12. American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are provided to ensure that deaf and hard-of-hearing students can also participate.
Speech Selection: Students need to choose one of the four selected speeches by Frederick Douglass, learn a section by heart, and then perform it in front of a panel of judges. The four speeches usually include What to the Slave is the Fourth of July delivered on July 5, 1852, A Friendly Word to Maryland delivered on November 17, 1864, Frederick Douglass on Women’s Suffrage delivered on March 31, 1888, and The Race Problem delivered on October 21, 1890.
Judges: They are volunteers from the community and individuals from the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association (FDMHA).
Judging Criteria: Contestants are evaluated based on their understanding, delivery, and interpretation of the speech.
Awards: Winners receive medals and other prizes. There are four separate award categories: Elementary (grades 1—3), Junior (grades 4—5), Junior High (grades 6—8), and Senior High (grades 9—12). The contest’s first-place winners will be invited to perform their award-winning speeches at a Black History Month event in Washington, D.C.

In 2019, three young men Adam Colucci, Dan Spanovich, and Jesse Wig purchased the long-abandoned Bowtie High School in Homestead, Pennsylvania, for $100,000.
“We were thinking of turning it into a We Work space, a concert hall, or a park. Initially, we had no shortage of ideas on what to do with the space,” Adam Colucci said. “But after seeking professional advice, we realized that residential area is the best path forward for this building.”
The three, all designers and investors, used their skills to redesign the school into modern apartments. Adam Colucci focused on preserving the school’s historical features, such as its 12-foot ceilings and original floors, while working closely with the National Park Service. Meanwhile, Dan Spanovich led the restoration of the auditorium (礼堂) that was once in a state of disrepair, repairing damaged plaster and keeping its original flooring and an old wooden bookshelf. Jesse Wig helped redesign classrooms into apartments, adding unique touches like a classroom chalkboard which was rescued and reused from a classroom.
They invested around $3.3 million and spent up to 18 months thoroughly renovating (翻新) the building, which resulted in 31 apartment units, comprising 27 one-bedroom units renting for approximately $1,400 per month and four two-bedroom units for $1,600 per month. They received calls for room rentals every day. Soon, all these units were rented out. It turned out that their initial vision was insightful and their investment was worthwhile.
After construction was complete and new tenants (租户) moved in, the three invested the money made from the Bowtie building into the Schwab School — another abandoned school on the same street. “Schwab was a building that a lot of people in the community had looked at and had come to the conclusion that it just couldn’t be done. This is really what drives my partners and me.” In 2023, Spanovich, Wig, and Colucci purchased it for $90,000 and spent $4.5 million transforming it into a 33-unit apartment building. They felt satisfied when they brought these overlooked buildings back to life.
4. What do we know about the three young men’s design of Bowtie High School
A. They lacked ideas about function of the space.
B. They stuck to their original ideas to the end.
C. They turned to experts for proper designs.
D. They rebuilt all the best paths in the school.
5. How can we evaluate the three’s renovation of Bowtie High School
A. They worked together to honor its past. B. They prioritized profit over history.
C. They completed it with extreme speed. D. They gave up modern designs.
6. What is implied about the three’s motivation for the Bowtie project
A. They aimed to prove doubts wrong. B. They disliked new constructions.
C. Schools shouldn’t be abandoned. D. Old buildings have hidden value.
7. What can we learn from the three’s renovating the Schwab School
A. They dare to challenge the impossible. B. Recycling materials saves costs.
C. Community cooperation is vital. D. Historic protection comes first.

What makes people start exercising A study from Tel Aviv University found that looking good is the biggest reason. By analyzing honest online discussions, researchers discovered 24% of people exercise mainly to improve their appearance, beating physical health (19%) and mental health (17%). This challenges common beliefs that health benefits drive exercise habits.
Traditional research on exercise motivation typically relies on questionnaires and structured interviews. While these approaches produce valuable data, they come with blind spots. However, researchers from Tel Aviv University focused on natural conversations online where people spoke freely. Online anonymity (匿名) allowed honest sharing without fear of judgment. As researcher Prof. Gepner noted, “People say they want health in surveys, but in casual talks, they admit they want six-pack abs (六块腹肌).” This revealed gaps between what we claim and what we truly prioritize.
When it comes to sticking with exercise, many people agreed that building steady habits is key — 30% said routines matter more than short-lived excitement. As one person explained, “Motivation comes and goes, but discipline keeps you going.” Other helpful tips included setting goals (14%), picking activities you enjoy (12%), and exercising with friends (10%). For example, someone who hates running might love dance classes instead. Some even found paying for gym memberships beneficial, as spending money pushed them to stay committed.
The bottom line The most effective exercise routine isn’t necessarily the scientifically optimal one — it’s the one you’ll actually do consistently. Fitness experts suggest focusing on fun and consistency. Comments praised combining exercise with social time or music. Many stressed tracking progress with apps (2.8%) or setting specific targets, like running three times weekly. One person summed it up: “Do something fun for exercise. For example, I love basketball, so I play basketball as an exercise but I still enjoy it and it doesn’t even seem like work. Science-based workouts matter less than finding joy in movement.”
8. Why does the author mention the statistics in paragraph 1
A. To prove a point. B. To compare research methods.
C. To list health benefits. D. To show exercise popularity.
9 Which word best describes the study method by Tel Aviv University
A. Risky. B. Unconventional.
C. Popular. D. Time-consuming.
10. What does the underlined word “optimal” in the last paragraph mean
A. Precise. B. Direct. C. Fun. D. Ideal.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. What Makes Exercise Consistent B. How to Build an Exercise Routine
C. Why Exercise and How to Keep Going D. Why Does Exercise Focus on Appearance
D
Japanese scientists have created a small, smart robot named HB-3 that might bring about new changes in some fields.
The HB-3 robot was inspired by how beetles (甲虫) move. It uses special materials that bend slightly when electricity is applied. These tiny movements allow it to walk with extreme precision — sometimes adjusting by just a billionth of a meter! The robot’s built-in camera and computer let it “see” objects, plan paths, and perform tasks without human help. It also carries its own battery, lasting long enough to work freely in spaces up to 1.6 meters wide.
What makes the HB-3 stand out lies in its capacity to operate independently in environments such as sealed (密封的) laboratories, enclosed spaces filled with dangerous substances, or areas where dangerous materials are present. For instance, it managed to construct a functional electronic circuit within a space too small for human hands, placing parts like resistors and LEDs with 87% accuracy. Additionally, the robot has the ability to change its tools, using various devices suitable for different tasks. Researchers believe that in the future it could potentially repair machinery, or provide assistance in medical operations.
However, the HB-3 works slower than older models — taking about seven minutes to finish a task — because its small computer isn’t powerful enough. The robot also struggles to judge depth accurately without extra cameras. While it placed parts correctly 87% of the time, mistakes still happen. Additionally, the current version hasn’t been tested in extreme heat, radiation, or other dangerous conditions it might face in real-world jobs.
Engineers plan to make the HB-3 faster by upgrading its computer and adding side cameras for better 3D vision. Scientists believe that by combining beetle-inspired movement, wireless freedom, and smart tools, the HB-3 could change how we handle delicate tasks in factories, hospitals, and even space missions. As one researcher said, “Sometimes nature already has the best solutions — we just need to copy them at the right size.”
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning the HB-3
A. Its power source. B. Its working principles.
C. Its movement precision. D. Its camera functions.
13. Which is the HB-3’s biggest advantage
A. Switching the tools flexibly. B. Repairing electronic circuits.
C. Handling dangerous materials. D. Working alone in tiny spaces.
14. What does the last paragraph intend to tell us
A. Humans and nature should coexist. B. Protecting nature matters.
C. Nature inspires human creativity. D. Technology beats up nature.
15. What’s the author’s attitude to the HB-3
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Tolerant.

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As a mirror reflects our appearance, self-awareness reveals our inner world. For students, building self- awareness is a practical tool to handle academic challenges and personal growth.
Self-awareness begins with honest reflection. During stressful exam preparations, stop occasionally to ask: What are my strengths Where do I struggle Keeping a journal helps track patterns in your study habits and emotional responses. Students who notice they perform better in morning study sessions can adjust their schedule accordingly. ___16___
Feedback is another mirror. Teachers’ comments often highlight blind spots. Your teacher might point out, “You’re great at memorization but you always avoid critical thinking.” ___17___ By discussing these insights with your teacher, you can turn feedback into practical steps — like practicing problem-solving exercises to strengthen weak areas.
___18___ Define specific objectives: “Improve essay writing by practicing weekly” beats unclear aims like “Study harder”. Match goals with your values — if creativity matters most, prioritize subjects or projects that develop it. This prevents burnout caused by following others’ expectations.
Finally, accept imperfections. High school seniors often link self-worth with exam rankings. ___19___ When challenges occur, analyze them calmly. Did inadequate preparation or anxiety cause low marks Such analysis turns failures into stepping stones.
So let me say that self-awareness helps you understand your unique “operating system.” ___20___ Like a compass (指南针), it supports not only academic success but also lifelong growth. As you sharpen this skill, you’ll find confidence in facing an ever-changing future.
A. This is self-awareness in action.
B. So how do you assess self-awareness
C. Accepting it is beneficial to your growth.
D. Learning goals play a vital role in education.
E. Remember that clarity in goals also sharpens self-awareness.

On a sunny Friday afternoon, our class was excited about the upcoming school science fair. Mr. Smith, our science teacher, tasked us with creating a unique project to showcase. He divided the class into groups of four and I was teamed up with three other classmates: Alex, Lily, and Tom. We brainstormed ideas, and I proposed a project about the effects of different fertilizers (肥料) on plant growth. Everyone took the idea on board, and we got started right away.
We divided the work. I was in charge of researching different types of fertilizers, Alex was to prepare the plants, Lily would record the data, and Tom was responsible for making the display board. At first, everything went smoothly. I dug deep into various resources, finding detailed information about fertilizers. Alex carefully planted the seeds and took good care of the young plants. The other two also applied themselves to completing their tasks routinely.
However as the days passed, problems began to surface. Tom, who was not very interested in the project from the start, started slacking off (偷懒). He didn’t spend much time on the display board, saying he was too busy with other things. Lily got frustrated because the incomplete display board affected her data organization. Arguments broke out within the group. I was angry with Tom for not completing his duty, and Tom argued that the project wasn’t as important as we thought. Alex tried to calm us down, but the tension was still on.
The science fair was approaching fast, and we were far from ready. With the project in a mess, we all felt stressed and disappointed. Lily even stayed up late trying to reorganize the scattered (零散的) data, but without Tom’s visuals, her charts looked incomplete and confusing. None of us wanted to see our hard work go to waste, but we didn’t know how to solve the problem.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Alumni Share Wisdom at School Event
Last Friday afternoon, our school hosted a “Learning Experience Exchange” with alumni returning to inspire current students. Graduates from top universities shared their study strategies, time management tips, and stress-relief methods. Interactive Q&A sessions and group discussions allowed personalized advice.
As a senior student, I found their stories motivating. Their practical suggestions, like balancing study and rest, eased my anxiety. This event not only offered us guidance but also strengthened our confidence to tackle future challenges. I am extremely grateful to the school and the alumni for providing us with such a meaningful opportunity!

【答案】
One day, Mr. Smith noticed our troubled faces and came to ask what was wrong. We poured out all our problems to him. After listening patiently, Mr. Smith smiled and said, “Teamwork is the key to success. Each of you plays an important role in this project. You need to understand and support one another.” He then helped us rearrange the tasks according to our strengths. Tom was given less time-consuming tasks but something that he was more interested in, while others took on some of the workload that Tom couldn’t handle.
With a new plan in place, we started working together again. Tom became more motivated, putting his heart into his new tasks. Lily and I shared the data-recording work, and Alex took on more responsibility for plant care. We communicated constantly, sharing ideas and supporting each other. Day by day, our project took shape. When the science fair finally arrived, our hard work paid off. Our project not only looked great but also won the second prize. Through this experience, we truly learned the power of cooperation.
