参考答案
“Flowers may not be as practical as food.” I said. “Food will feed her for the day, but flowers will delight her for days or longer.” one of them insisted. Looking at the bunches of blooming flowers neatly arranged there, sweet scent filling the air, I changed my mind. With my consent, the kids rushed forward, chose a bunch of beautiful purple flowers, and carefully placed it into the cart. Soon we jumped into the car and drove toward Mrs. Wilson’s home. The little ones talked and giggled on the way, unable to hold back their excitement.
With a food box and a bunch of flowers, we finally arrived at Mrs. Wilson’s home. With great hospitality, she led us into her house. When one kid sent her the sweet flowers, she simply couldn’t conceal her excitement, tears glittering in her eyes. Holding the flowers to her nose, she seemed to regain her youth and vigor. At that moment, the kids had found the power they possessed to make another life better. Sometimes a bunch of flowers could nourish another soul on a dark November day.

W: My feet hurt. I think I need some new shoes.
M: What size do you wear

W: Andrew, what was it like growing up in Kelowna You know, I’m from Ontario, which doesn’t have mountains and is a little bit more flat, and I’m always jealous of people who are from the West Coast and have beautiful natural scenes around them.
M: Yeah, absolutely, Maura. We have summer, a beautiful long summer, and I swim a lot. Although it’s fairly grey in the winter but it’s not too cold, which is nice. And of course there are many places for skating. I like it but I like skiing in the mountains more. It was so great.
W: How cold is it there in winter
M: I think the coldest it would get in Kelowna during the winter is maybe minus 10 degree. So it’s not that bad in Kelowna. And then in the summer it’s... Yeah, it’s really warm.

Text 9
M: Tonight with us is Ms. Louise Graham, a group leader at Ravensfield Outdoor Adventure Center for children. Louise, how long have you been there
W: Well, I first went there two years ago. I thought I’d probably only stay for a year, but after six months or so I really started to enjoy the job. I’m really glad I stayed.
M: So, you were not really sure about the work at first
W: Well, to be honest, I was lacking in self-confidence, and when I first arrived, I was frightened I might put the children in danger because of my inexperience.
M: What’s the best thing about your work
W: I like to see children have so much fun, and I can suggest activities that haven’t been tried before. But for me the most rewarding part is getting the less-abled kids to succeed in things they haven’t managed to do before.
M: Mm. I know sometimes you have to be on duty at night.
W: Yeah, and I can’t say I look forward to starting work at 10:00 p.m., but someone has to do it and all the staff take turns.
Text 10
W: During World War II, every one in three American men left home to serve in the military between 1941 and 1945, and women worked in jobs out of the home. These women not only continued to manage their households, but they also worked in factories, labs, power plants and etc. The war completely changed the responsibility of women in the workforce during these years — and this completely changed how they dressed. Because women were doing more tasks requiring labor like driving trucks. Safety and practicality became more important over looking attractive. Working women put away their high-heeled shoes and silk dresses and wore cotton shirts and blue jeans instead. During the war, certain materials were saved for military purposes. And to use less of cloth, clothes makers began designing shorter skirts and slimmer clothing. By the end of the war, over six million American women had joined the workforce, and nearly one out of every four married women worked outside the home. Although many were replaced by men once the men returned from war, working out of the home changed people’s views of what women could do.南安一中2024~2025学年度下学期高一年第一次阶段考试

Ivan Pavlov was a Russian physiologist (生理学家) best known for his discovery of classical conditioning (经典条件反射). During his studies on the digestive systems of dogs, Pavlov found that the animals salivated (流口水) naturally upon the presentation of food. However, he also noticed that the animals began to salivate whenever they saw the white lab coat of an experimental assistant. By associating the presentation of food with the lab assistant, he finally found that a dog would salivate to the presence of a stimulus (刺激物) other than food. He called this response a conditional reflex.
Ivan Pavlov was born in a small village in Ryazan. Russia, where his father was the village minister. His earliest studies were focused on theology (神学), but reading Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species had a powerful influence on his future interests. He soon stopped his religious studies and devoted himself to the study of science at the University of Saint Petersburg. Pavlov’s interests were the study of physiology and natural sciences. He helped found the Department of Physiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine and continued to manage the program for the next 45 years.
Pavlov received much praise for his work. He worked in the Russian Academy of Science and won the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology. The Soviet government also offered lots of support for Pavlov’s work, and the Soviet Union soon became a leading center of research on physiology. While Ivan Pavlov was not a psychologist, and reportedly disliked the field of psychology, his work had a major influence on the field, particularly on the development of behaviorism. Frank Herbert’s science fiction Dune was the first coming-of-age story that helped me survive my lonely junior high school. At age 12, my life was the tiny, boring cycle of home, school and my parents’ store. Dune cracked it all open and led me to a universe that made my little world a lot more bearable. Unlike Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye who kept breaking windows, Dune’s main character, Paul Atreides, equipped me with a junior-high survival guide.
Paul is not a classic underdog. He’s the son of a king. He’s been trained since birth in war arts, politics and critical survival skills by a group of smart and experienced men with impossible-to -pronounce names. But when his world is turned upside down - when he leaves his home, loses his father and enters a physically and politically hostile environment - he doesn’t complain and cry. He adapts.
To this day, I still can recite his words against fear: “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total ruin. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
The steady diet of literary fiction assigned by my teachers was escapist and the very act of reading (whatever the content) usually took me out of a given moment, but didn’t provide much advice on how to face my daily conflicts and painful insecurity.
Dune was escapist, too. However, it was eye-opening and literally redefined possibility for me who had been struggling along with eyes on the ground, just trying to make it through another day of boredom and hardship of being a teenage girl. Paul lifted my eyes up so I could see the stars.
28. Which best explains “hostile” underlined in paragraph 2
A. Safe. B. Unfriendly. C. Unbeneficial. D. Pleasant.
29. What is probably the author’s deepest impression about Paul
A. His good education. B. His noble birth.
C. His courage to face fear. D. His escapist attitude.
30. What does the author say about herself as a teenager
A. She was an optimistic girl. B. She was not loved by her parents.
C. She had a carefree childhood. D. She felt insecure and unconfident.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. The Catcher in the Rye Should Be Banned
B. Teenagers Should Not Read Literary Fictions
C. Dune Became My Junior-High Survival Guide
D. Science Fiction Is Better Than Literary Fiction
D
Imagine driving behind a huge truck shooting clouds of smoke into the air while your new fully electric vehicle cleans up its carbon emissions (排放). This dream may soon be a reality. A team of students in the Netherlands has created an electric car that not only doesn’t produce carbon dioxide when driving, but actually pulls it out of the air.
The two-seater sports car was designed and built in less than a year by a team of 32 students at Eindhoven University of Technology. Called “ZEM”, which stands for “zero emission mobility”, the car is equipped with special devices that remove carbon dioxide from the air as it drives. The team says if ZEM is driven about 32,000 kilometers, it can remove 2 kilograms of carbon dioxide from the air. That’s not a huge amount. The team calculates that 10 ZEM cars on the road for a year would remove as much carbon dioxide as a typical tree does during that time. However, they also point out that there are over a billion passenger cars in the world that could be using this technology. And if a billion cars were removing carbon dioxide instead of producing it, the result would be huge.
ZEM also has several other innovations that help to make it more capable of being sustained: the car’s frame and panels (面板) are 3D printed to reduce waste; it was built using recycled and recyclable materials; and it can be easily taken apart so that many of its parts can be reused. ZEM’s battery is also reusable, and has another handy feature: it can be charged with solar panels on the car’s roof—and can even be used to provide power to your house when the car isn’t on the road.
According to the statistics, transportation was responsible for over 20% of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2020—and of those emissions, cars were responsible for 41%. The Eindhoven team says its goal is to challenge the electric car industry: If 32 students can build a car like this in less than a year, then surely car manufacturers (生产商) are expected to adopt these innovations, too.
32. What is special about ZEM
A. It can end the world’s CO2 release. B. It can cut the truck’s CO2 emissions.
C. It can reduce the level of CO2 in the air. D. It can absorb dirty air as well as CO2.
33. Why does the team run the calculation of ZEM in paragraph 2
A. To demonstrate a superb vision of ZEM cars.
B. To explain how ZEM removes CO2 as trees do.
C. To illustrate the ongoing change in car making.
D. To show the influence of ZEM on the car market.
34. What do we know about all the components of ZEM
A. They are of high quality. B. They are easy to process.
C. They are convenient to print. D. They are environmentally friendly.
35. What does the Eindhoven team hope to achieve in the future

Thanksgiving for the Soul
Working as a primary teacher in Pompton Lakes Primary School, New Jersey, I particularly believed in cultivating(培养) love in children from an early age. I wanted children to experience that it’s more blessed to give than to receive. I wanted them to understand that love of society and love of life is not just lip service; that people somehow have to make it come alive. I hoped they could experience a sense of their own power to make a difference.
There was a rural area nearby where a lot of aged people lived in solitude (孤独). They either had no family or their children had left to work in big cities. Most of them lived on government aid to keep body and soul together. An agency, which was in charge of the elder people in this region, had once told me about a needy grandmother, Mrs. Wilson, who had lived alone for many years. I had always desired to do something for her. So I came up with the Thanksgiving plan.
In October, I told the eight-year-olds in my class about my plan. “I’d like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said. “Then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for a needy grandma who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”
Early in Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class clutching (紧握) their hard-earned money. They had cleared rubbish, set tables, washed dishes, helped with younger siblings. And now they couldn’t wait to go shopping.
I watched while they ran up and down the supermarket aisles (货架通道). At last we headed toward the checkout, pushing a cart filled with turkey and all the trimmings (配料).
