On a spring day, Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis,74, began working at the Dorset resort when he was 16. “It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working and helping people. What could be better ”
His colleagues were just half his age. But he is still fighting fit. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25m pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The tests are still reasonably comfortable for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 meters of sea swimming each month.
Lewis’s adventure began in 1965 when a police officer spotted that he was a keen swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges. The following year he began volunteering as a lifeguard at the age of 16. Then he became part of the RNLI lifeguards in 2001 and began providing beach patrols for local authorities.
Now the RNLI patrols more than 240 beaches across the UK. Lewis laughed when asked if he had seen many changes. “The RNLI’s equipment in 2024 includes jet skis, rescue boats and quad bikes. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a coat if you were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different.”
His most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when three children got into trouble while swimming. There was a combination of wind and a lively spring tide. One of them was being hurled into a rock with severe cuts. The other two were being “knocked around” by the waves. Lewis swam out just with a rescue tube but managed to get all three back.
Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out rescues. “I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.”
4. Why is the training of RNLI mentioned
A. To explain the importance of swimming skills. B. To stress Lewis’s efforts and capacity.
C. To show demands of being a safeguard. D. To describe the test process of fitness swimming.
5. What made Lewis begin his life-saving career
A. His voluntary experience. B. His passion for swimming.
C. An invitation from RNLI. D. A police officer’s suggestion.
6. What can be inferred from Lewis’s words in Paragraph 4
A. RNLI cares for the safety of lifeguards. B. RNLI currently needs more lifeguards.
C. Lifeguard work was not easy in the past. D. The former lifeguards were more skilled.
7. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase in paragraph 5
A. hit repeatedly B. turned around C. hung out D. broken down
C
Researchers have found that short and intense bursts of stair climbing, which can be done almost anywhere, have great benefits for fitness.
The findings make the two most common excuses of couch potatoes (懒惰的人) untrue: no time and no access to the gym. “Stair climbing is a form of exercise anyone can do in their own home, after work or during the lunch hour,” says Martin, a lead author of the study. “This research takes interval (间歇) training out of the lab and makes it accessible to everyone.”
Early studies have shown the benefits of stair climbing over continuous periods of time up to 70 minutes a week — but researchers wanted to determine if interval training, which includes short and intense exercise separated by short periods of recovery, was a good way to improve heart health.
Researchers recruited (招收) 31 women and tested the effect of two different experiments, each of which required a 10-minute exercise period, including warm-up, cool-down and recovery periods. The exercise periods were done three times a week over the course of six weeks.
The first experiment included three 20-second periods of continuous climbing in an “all-out” manner. The participants were then compared to those who went through the same experiment using an exercise bike which has already been shown to improve fitness.
For the second experiment, some women climbed up and down one flight of stairs for periods of 60 seconds, an experiment which could be easily done at home.
Both experiments, each including a total time of 30 minutes a week, increased cardiorespiratory (心肺的) fitness, an important healthy marker that is connected with long life.
8. What does Martin say about stair climbing
A. It wastes lots of time. B. It is convenient to do.
C. It requires special training. D. It is better than going to the gym.
9. Why did researchers do the two experiments
A. To test the results of early studies.
B. To encourage people to climb stairs.
C. To prove the benefits of continuous stair climbing.
D. To find out interval training’s effect on heart health.
10. What can we learn from the two experiments
A. The first one was better for fitness. B. The second one required less total time.
C. Both of them were good for heart health. D. People in the second one turned out healthier.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. How Stair Climbing Benefits People B. Why Stair Climbing Is the Best Exercise
C. Stair Climbing — A Good Way to Increase Fitness D. Simple Stair Climbing Exercises at Home
D
When tennis player Sam Bencheghib recognized the way the oceans in his home country, Indonesia, were polluted, in 2009 he and his older brother, Gary, co-founded Make a Change World, an organization supporting sustainability(可持续性) as well as helping to cut plastic(塑料) pollution. The company shares short videos encouraging eco-friendly actions.
Bencheghib has worked on several projects overseas. But he wanted to do something in the United States on his own. In January, Bencheghib came up with the idea to run from Los Angeles to New York, to make people pay attention to plastic pollution and its influence on oceans. Starting on June 8, Bencheghib has kept running 20 miles a day for 140 days. Along the way, he plans to host education speeches at schools, universities and town halls as well as organize street and city cleanups to influence people.
Bencheghib said he understands the difficulty of his task but recognizes that taking risks often has advantages. Unsurprisingly, when he told his team and coaches about his plan, he was met with surprise.
“We were all really excited but couldn’t believe it,” teammate Christopher Auteri said. “It’s crazy how long it is, but we know if there’s anyone who’s going to do it, it’s going to be Sam.”
Since Bencheghib broke the news to the team, there have been no plastic water bottles in the locker room, and teammates join Bencheghib on training runs. Coach Wouter Hendrix said Bencheghib’s work shows his persistence(坚持) and courage, which he believes will serve as invaluable qualities for completing his run.
12. What encouraged Sam to set up his organization
A. A conversation with his brother.
B. The sea pollution in Indonesia.
C. The videos he watched.
D. A match he played.
13. What decision did Sam make to protect the oceans
A. Meeting local leaders.

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

【47题答案】
【答案】范文:
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.
