I. Teaching Aims
1. Knowledge Aims
Students can master the new words and phrases: weight, shoulder, goal, coach, courage, pull, nod, agreement, disappoint, let... down, kick sb. off, be hard on sb., rather than, pull together, etc.
Students can understand the key sentences in the passage, such as "He felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone...", "His mind would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the school soccer field."
2. Ability Aims
Students can improve their reading skills, including skimming for the main idea, scanning for details, and recognizing idioms and phrases.
Students can use the target language to talk about their own experiences of making mistakes and feelings, and express their opinions about teamwork.
3. Emotional Aims
Students can learn to face failure bravely and have an optimistic attitude towards life.
Students can realize the importance of teamwork and learn to support and encourage each other.

Step 1 Warming - up
Show students some pictures of famous soccer players, such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and ask them: "What do you think of these soccer players Do you like playing soccer "
Then play a short video of an exciting soccer game. After watching, ask students: "How do you feel when you watch a soccer game Do you think winning is the most important thing in a game "

Step 2 Pre - reading
Work on 2a
Ask students to work in pairs and discuss the questions: "Have you ever made a mistake How did it make you feel " Give them 2 - 3 minutes to talk.
Then invite some pairs to share their experiences with the class.
Prediction
Show students the title "The Winning Team" and the picture in 2b. Ask them to look at the title and the picture carefully and predict what the passage may talk about. For example, ask: "What can you see in the picture Who are they What might have happened to them " Let students share their predictions.

Step 3 While - reading
First Reading (Skimming)
Ask students to skim the passage quickly and divide the passage into three parts according to the related meaning. Tell them to read fast and find the key words. Give them 3 minutes.
After that, ask students to share how they divide the passage and use one sentence or phrase to summarize each part. Guide them to find key words or related meanings in every paragraph. Finally, show the correct structure on the screen:
Part 1 (Paragraph 1): Peter missed scoring a goal and his team lost the game. He felt very bad.
Part 2 (Paragraphs 2 - 6): Peter's father talked to him and gave him some advice.
Part 3 (Paragraphs 7 - 11): Peter went to the soccer practice and had a good talk with his teammates.
Second Reading (Scanning)
Ask students to scan Para. 1 and answer the questions:
Q1: What happened in the game (He missed scoring that goal and his team lost the game.)
Q2: How did he feel after the game (He felt angry and worried.)
Q3: Why did he feel angry and worried (Because his stupid mistake made him angry and his team lost the game because of him. He was worried that his coach might kick him off the team.)
Then ask students to scan Para. 2 - 6 and find out some advice Peter's father gave him. Let them underline the advice sentences in the passage.
Next, ask students to scan Para. 7 - 11 and circle T for true or F for false for the following statements:
Statement 1: Peter didn't go to the soccer practice the next day. (F)
Statement 2: His teammates were angry with him. (F)
Statement 3: They decided to work together and support each other. (T)
Third Reading (Recognizing Idioms and Phrases)
Explain the reading strategy of recognizing idioms and phrases. Read aloud the first paragraph and ask students to find the idioms and phrases, such as "let... down", "be hard on sb.".
Let students read the rest of the passage and find more idioms and phrases. Then have a group competition to see which group can find the most.

Step 4 Post - reading
Work on 2d
Ask students to discuss the questions in 2d in pairs. Then ask them to replace the underlined parts with the phrases they found in the passage.
Invite some pairs to share their answers with the class and check the answers together.
Role - play
Work on 2e. Ask students to role - play a conversation between Peter and his father. First, let them read the passage again to get a better understanding of the characters' feelings and words.
Then divide students into pairs. One student acts as Peter and the other acts as his father. Give them 3 - 4 minutes to practice the conversation.
Finally, invite some pairs to act out their conversations in front of the class.
Group Discussion
Divide students into groups of four. Give them the following topics to discuss:
What can we learn from Peter's experience
In your opinion, what is the most important thing in a team
Have you ever had a similar experience How did you deal with it
Give each group 5 minutes to discuss. Then ask each group to choose a representative to share their group's opinions with the class.

Step 5 Summary and Homework
Summary
Summarize the key points of this class with students, including the new words, phrases, key sentences, and the main idea of the passage. Also, emphasize the importance of facing failure bravely and the significance of teamwork.
Homework
Ask students to write a short passage about an unforgettable experience of making a mistake. They should include how they felt at that time and how they dealt with it.
Encourage students to read more stories about facing difficulties and share them in the next class.
