Can you imagine a school with only one student There was one on the Out Skerries Islands, and Aron was the only student.
The Out Skerries Islands, which are around 280 km from the coast of Scotland, are home to about 70 people. The nearest town is Lerwick on the Shetland Islands. You can only get there by boat and it takes two and a half hours. Besides Aron’s school, there are also two shops and a community hall on the islands.
Aron wasn’t the only student at the school at first. There were several other children there before. But when they were older, they went to the secondary school in Lerwick. Aron then became the only student.

Aron had lived in Out Skerries since he was born and loved the outdoor life. He enjoyed exploring (探索) the islands on his bike and jumping into the sea from the pier (突堤).
But his mother was worried that Aron might get lonely. She would like to see more families with children coming to live there. Many people have moved away since the local factory closed years ago. 七、阅读与表达
Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else’s world for a while. Reading together with others, known as buddy reading, will make this journey even more fantastic. During the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also deepens their understanding of the books.
Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, schools usually pair up older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a programme and has got a great success.
Both younger and older readers in this school learnt a lot from this two-year programme. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and careful. This activity also provided them with a chance to practise lifelong skills such as exercising leadership or getting on well with others. A student called Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt closer as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
