A
In China, people call a man of great virtue a gentleman. In the world of flowers, plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums are known as the four gentlemen in China because these plants' natural characters have something in common with human virtues.
Plum blossoms
Plum blossoms are cold resistant flowers that bloom in early spring and together with pines and bamboos they are considered as the “three friends in winter”.“Without going through the bone chilling cold, how can the plum blossom smell fragrant?” By praising the strong character of plum blossoms, the poem aims to inspire people to overcome difficulties and make achievements with firm determination.
Orchids
Orchids are one of the top ten well known flowers in China. With delicate fragrance refreshing people's minds, and the elegant figures swaying slightly in the wind, orchids are equal to elegance in Chinese people's eyes. It is said that Su Shi, a famous poet in the Song Dynasty, once painted orchids with some thorns between them, implying that a gentleman can put up with a mean person.
Bamboo
In traditional Chinese culture, bamboo is a metaphor of energy, elegance, plainness, longevity and perseverance. Their firm and unbeatable willpower was admired by many ancient literati (文人). Famous poet Su Shi once wrote down “I would rather eat without meat than live without bamboo” in his poem to express his deep love for bamboo.
Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemum is a traditional flower loved by Chinese people. When nearly all the flowers are dried up and bare in late autumn, only the chrysanthemums resist the heavy frost and bloom energetically in graceful shapes and bright colours. Chrysanthemums have been given more meanings under the pen of literati. The most well known verse about chrysanthemums is “Plucking chrysanthemums under the eastern hedge, I calmly view the southern hills”, which comes from the famous poet Tao Yuanming's poem Drinking, showing the leisure of Tao's reclusive life.

My family visited the coastal town of St.Pete Beach, Florida. With its pretty sandy beaches, deep blue waters and year round sunshine, it's clear to see why St. Pete is a popular tourist destination among travellers from around the world.
Just a few feet from our apartment, we found ourselves walking on white sand towards the bright blue ocean. We were soon greeted by a man offering us the use of one of his luxury beach cabanas (小屋) for the day at a very reasonable price and settled into a full day of relaxation. The peaceful atmosphere was a true escape from the hustle and bustle (喧嚣) of the city. It was so easy to while away the days from morning until dusk, enjoying the warmth of the sun's rays and getting lost in a good book, before taking a quick swim in the calm waters to cool off.
Once the sun set, there was a various range of bars and restaurants to choose from just a few steps away. The warm evening atmosphere was peppered with the mouthwatering smell of sizzling freshly caught fish. The only hardship was trying to decide where to dine each evening with so many tasty options!
After a while, we began to desire a bit more adventure on our trip which, to our delight, we discovered was easy to come by. On one of our outings, we took a boat trip to the undisturbed island of Egmont Key State Park. There we explored the ruins of a military outpost built in 1898 and a 150 year old working lighthouse. The island is also a protected wildlife reserve. On our return journey, we were excited to discover we were being followed by over a dozen dolphins, who were taking turns to leap out of the water playfully in the wake of our boat.

Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing.
Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are not protecting the places for birds to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration or flight paths of almost 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas.
The major danger for migratory birds is development.Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. One of the scientists who worked on the study says “Many of these important places have been lost to land reclamation (开垦) because of urban, industrial and agricultural land expansion.”
The problem, according to scientists, is that many of these small birds die along their migration paths because they don't have a safe place to feed and rest. There is no place to restore their energy for the next part of their journey.Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time in protecting land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that doesn't exist now is the Eskimo curlew.“Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says.
The researchers say countries need to work together and come up with safe stopping areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have preserved safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbour country might not.A bird might die.
One scientist who is not connected with the report tells Los Angeles Times that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds.
He says small changes, like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of the areas birds would be likely to use, could make a big difference.
8.What mainly caused the disappearing of birds' habitats
A.The decrease of awareness to protect birds.
B.Natural disasters.
C.Overuse of land by human beings.
D.The rising sea level.
9.What may be the main reason for many birds' death on the way of migration
A.Exhaustion and hunger.
B.Beast attacks on the ground.
C.Hunting of humans.
D.The long journey.
10.According to the last two paragraphs, how should we protect the migrating birds
A.By keeping fewer cats or dogs.
B.By restoring their destroyed habitats.
C.By helping change the birds' migration paths.
D.By preserving the ecological environments on their migration paths.
11.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage
A.To tell us a huge percentage of bird species are in danger.
B.To analyze the reasons for disappearing of birds' habitats.
C.To limit the urban development.
D.To call on people to protect birds' habitats.
D
Listening to birds sing or watching them fly is more than just entertaining. Being around birds offers benefits to emotional well being that can last as long as eight hours, a new study finds.
“The motivation behind the research comes from my interest in exploring both protective and negative environmental factors which could impact mental health,” lead author Ryan Hammoud says.“Most previous studies looked at the benefits of nature as a whole. We chose to focus on birdlife to know and understand which specific characteristics of nature favour mental well being.”
Researchers used an app to follow 1,292 people who completed nearly 27,000 assessments. Three times each day, the app asked participants whether they could hear or see birds. They were asked to answer follow up questions on their state of mind at the time, so researchers could see if there was a connection and how long it lasted. Mental well being was measured with questions about whether they were feeling confident, happy, for example, or more negative feelings such as whether they felt anxious or lonely.
The study collected data on people who have mental health conditions and those without. They discovered bird activity is linked to improvements in emotional well being in both groups. The effects were still observed in the following assessment which was up to eight hours later. Researchers also experimented to figure out the pertinence of the benefit to other environmental factors such as trees, plants, and waterways. Eventually, they found it was all about the birds.
This is the first study to demonstrate time lasting mental health benefits of encounters with birds in everyday life.“The result is interesting. It gives us new ideas and a better understanding of the planning and design of healthier cities,” Hammoud says.“It highlights the importance of protecting environments that encourage and sustain birdlife, not only for biodiversity but also for our mental health.”
12.Why did Hammoud conduct the research
A.To find why nature affects emotion.
B.To raise public awareness of protecting birds.
C.To see how long birds' impact lasts.
D.To identify natural factors good for mental health.
13.What are the participants asked to do every day
A.Spend some time with birds.
B.Record the locations of birds.
C.Report their emotional state.
D.Measure mental well being with a notebook.
14.What does the underlined word “pertinence” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Contribution. B.Limitation.
C.Connection. D.Application.
15.How does Hammoud find the result
A.It's inspirational. B.It's reliable.
C.It's comprehensive. D.It's unexpected.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The year I turned 30, my friend Erin and I decided to hike part of Newfoundland's East Coast Trail — 215 kilometres between Cappahayden and St.John's where the wild scenery was very charming! The path there would bring us great fun.
Neither of us had gone on a hiking trip longer than five days and now we were in for 14, but we were excited. Nature! Strength! Character! Our hike would end up giving me all of those things in cruel abundance, but there was one take home I didn't expect: proof of the astonishing kindness of strangers.
As a shy woman schooled in the risk of stranger danger, I'm not one to open up to people I don't know. In Toronto I don't even chat with my seatmate on the subway or in a grocery line, and I certainly don't ask for help unless I'm desperate. But on this hike I had to learn new ways to cope.
Over our first two days we covered less than 30 kilometres, most of it in the rain. What had been a gentle mist when we started evolved into a downpour by the second day. Nothing dried overnight, and everything was wet. The roads were rugged, with muddy patches so deep that stepping in the wrong place meant mud to mid calf — which is to say over and into your boots. We squelched (发出嘎吱声) with every step.
All that was very awful for me. On our second day, as we were still on a road looking like cats left in the rain, a woman and her parents making their way from car to house caught sight of us and took pity. “Would you like to come in for a cup of tea?” Jenny asked.
“Thank you!”
注意:1.续写词数应为150 左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
We hurried to their lovely home.

We'd encounter more kindness on the trip.

第一节 参考范文:
Dear Jack,
I'm glad to hear that you have made great progress after six years of Chinese learning.I fully understand your difficulties in learning poetry.I would be happy to share with you strategies we Chinese use to learn poetry.
The best way of learning poetry is reading.Only by reading more and accumulating more can you master poetry to the greatest extent. At the same time, having a Chinese dictionary can also be a good choice, so that you can refer to it when you come across Chinese characters you can't understand in reading.
Wish you success in your future poetry learning!
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
第二节 参考范文:
We hurried to their lovely home. I was totally at a loss what to say when the woman supplied us new clothes since ours were all wet through the rain. Wearing the new clothes, I felt warmth spread throughout my entire body. Throwing a warm smile at the woman, I thanked her from the bottom of my heart. “Would you like a cup of coffee?” she questioned. Then, a cup of hot coffee was handed to me. I smiled, “Sure!” The next moment witnessed our happy time when we shared most of our travelling story. For the first time, the stranger's warmth found its way straight into my heart.
We'd encounter more kindness on the trip. The next day, we continued our trip. Whenever we got into trouble, the travellers or the passers by would extend their helping hand to us. Tired and exhausted as we were, the kindness from the strangers really astonished me. From that trip on, I would always open up to people I don't know because I know most of them would be always ready to show their kindness.
