如本文由feel a bit scared,I'm shocked,makes me feel nervous,worrying too much等语句可判断,作者主要表达的是对气候变化可能会导致的一系列灾难性后果的忧虑之情。
1.Today, the temperature in London is expected to reach 30 plus degrees!
Hot! Hot!”,所以此处具体描述高温情况:预计达到30多度。相比于常见的表示“超过”的more than, over,此处plus的用法更地道准确,给文章增加了亮点,让人有耳目一新的感觉。
2.It's just typical that my journey is on one of the oldest lines, as well as one of the deepest. It's the hottest on the whole Tube system.
3.It's lovely at the beach, but not so when you're wearing a suit and in a crowd of passengers!
4.Looking through my newspaper, I'm shocked by photos showing that a typhoon in Asia has destroyed a town.
5.After all, it's only 30 degrees outside!
①The _________ (tall) student in our class is the one who ran _________ (fast) in the last sports meet.
②My parents were initially __________ (shock) at this disease but they were prepared to positively change my life.
③The trees are under threat and ten percent __________ (destroy) in huge wildfires last summer.
④Sophie knew clearly what that would mean to Caroline. ______________, they shared the same hobby, and they went through many competitions together.
1.Sure enough, going down the stairs and onto the platform is like jumping into a volcano that's erupting.
2.I'm sure the passenger next to me and I are melting and becoming one!
①Time flies ______________!
②“__________________________,” Granny used to say, “because every step shows.”
That way, But wait, Most importantly, Then等衔接词将作者的各种天马行空的想法有序地连接在一起,各种画面切换自然,毫无凌乱之感。I'll ...
The Science of Earthquakes
What is an earthquake The surface of the earth is divided into different pieces. These are called tectonic plates. This shakes the ground and everything on it.
What causes earthquakes and where do they happen
The earth has four main layers. They are the inner core, outer core, mantle and the earth's crust. The crust and the top of the mantle make up a thin skin on the surface of the planet. But this skin is not all in one piece. It is actually made up of many tectonic plates. They are like puzzle pieces. These pieces are always sliding around and bumping into each other. Sometimes their edges get stuck together. When this happens, the rest keeps moving. Eventually the edges come unstuck. That is when an earthquake happens.
Why does the earth shake when there is an earthquake
Earthquakes send out waves in all directions. When they reach the earth's surface, they shake the ground. There are different types of earthquake waves. The P wave squeezes and stretches the earth. The S wave shakes it up and down.
How are earthquakes recorded
Scientists use special tools to record and measure earthquakes. These tools are called seismographs. Recordings from seismographs tell scientists when and where an earthquake took place. They can also tell scientists the size of an earthquake.

Today, we have the ability to predict dangerous tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms and floods with more accuracy than ever.We know the areas that are likely to be struck by earthquakes, and the areas that are easily harmed by wildfires, and we can tell hours in advance whether a tsunami will hit our shores.
However, in spite of all the abilities for warnings, Americans are still quite poor at preparing for these disasters. In a 2006 survey carried out by TIME Magazine, only 16% percent believed they were well prepared for the next one.
A few weeks ago, I was listening to NPR (National Public Radio) as I was cooking dinner, and I heard a moving story about a young boy, Noah Stewart, who lived through a tornado that hit his Alabama home.
Noah was sucked (卷入) up into the tornado and then dropped. He landed on his head first, with a fall of such force that, under normal conditions, would have killed him. However, he survived because his mother made a quick decision to put a baseball helmet (头盔) on his head right before the tornado hit.Noah was unhurt in the storm. But the helmet cracked down the middle.
The CDC states that they can't say whether helmets can save lives during a tornado impact. However, it still seems wise for anyone in a tornado-prone (可能的) area to keep several helmets at the ready.Any added protection is going to increase your chance of survival, and as Noah's story clearly shows, helmets can save lives.
You don't have to buy new helmets — picking up used bicycle, football or baseball helmets at economical stores and yard sales can save money and keep your family protected.
However, it's necessary that you keep these helmets in an easily reachable place; they should not be used for any other purpose, as they may be misplaced.Remember, when a tornado hits, you might only have minutes — or even seconds — to find shelter. You don't want to run around your house, searching for those helmets.
1.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A.Americans are afraid of disasters.
B.There are many disasters in America.
C.Most Americans are not well prepared for disasters.
D.Disasters are better predicted in America.

根据第二段的 “However, in spite of all the abilities for warnings, Americans are still quite poor at preparing for these disasters.”
2.Why could Noah Stewart survive in the tornado
A.Because he was protected by a helmet.
B.Because he was brave in the tornado.
C.Because he was quick-minded in emergency.
D.Because he stayed with his mother.

根据第四段的 “However, he survived ... before the tornado hit.” 故选A。
3.What should you do to make the helmets function well
A.Choose new ones.
B.Use professional ones.
C.Put them at hand.
D.Save money to buy expensive ones.

根据最后一段的 “However, it's necessary ... as they may be misplaced.”
4.What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A.To describe the moving story of a boy.
B.To warn us of the tornado impact.
C.To advise us to keep helmets handy.
D.To ask us to prepare for the disasters.

Tsunamis (海啸) are one of the most terrifying natural phenomena that the world suffers. The series of waves produced by the displacement (位移) of a large volume of water can be caused by several events, including earthquakes, underwater explosions and landslides. Once triggered (引发), a tsunami can hit the coast within minutes and its destructive power can be enormous.
At present, early warning systems rely on measuring the movement of DART (Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami) buoys (浮标), which record changes in the sea level, or assessing the bottom water pressure of the developing tsunami. But they require the tsunami to physically reach the measurement location. The buoys could be fixed in the deep ocean, but this requires an unrealistically big number of buoys. Or people can fix the buoys along the shoreline, but due to the high speed of the tsunami, this method may leave no warning time for people on the land.
Instead, there is a new system using sound waves to predict tsunamis. Sound waves caused by an earthquake can travel much faster than the tsunami that has been triggered. Using standard underwater microphones, we can record these sound waves long before the tsunami arrives regardless of the direction in which the tsunami will travel. The sound signals come from changes in pressure, so what we actually analyze is a series of data on how the pressure is changing overtime.
Though buoys also show changes in pressure, the tsunami front must actually reach the buoys to inform us that there is an increase in the water surface. By using underwater microphones, however,we only need to catch the sound signals.
Though the idea of using sound waves to predict tsunamis has been put forward previously, the key to our idea is a new mathematical method that can be used to analyze these recorded sound signals in near real-time. Once this is worked out, we can not only warn people of a tsunami but also more accurately estimate its size long before it reaches the shoreline.
5.From paragraph 1, we know .
A.what can trigger off tsunamis
B.how to predict tsunamis effectively
C.why tsunamis are the worst natural disaster
D.how to protect the coastal areas from tsunamis

6.What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.The dart buoys.
B.The changes in the sea level.
C.The changes in water pressure.
D.The present early warning systems.

7.What can we infer about the new warning system from paragraph 3
A.It has high accuracy.
B.It can increase warning time.
C.It can monitor changeable sea levels.
D.It can adapt to various water wave conditions.

根据第三段中的“Instead, there is a new system using sound waves to predict tsunamis ... in which the tsunami will travel.”
8.What's the best title for the text
A.Ways to Guard Against Tsunamis
B.Methods of Analyzing Sound Signals
C.A New Real-time Tsunami Warning System
D.Tsunami — the Most Terrifying Natural Disaster

How to protect a home from a hurricane
A hurricane is one of Mother Nature's most deadly creations. It takes place all over the world and can easily destroy unprotected homes. 9 Some should be done well before hurricane season, while other measures can be taken after a hurricane alarm is issued (发布).
Protect your home from falling trees and branches. At the beginning of each hurricane season, examine all of the trees surrounding your house carefully. 10 If a tree is weakened, remove the tree completely. You may choose to remove small branches yourself or hire a professional tree care service.
11 Windows and doors breaking or opening during a hurricane can lead to great damage inside the home and possibly threaten the home's structure. You can buy specially designed hurricane shutters for each of the windows and doors in your house, or you can make your own.
Secure (缚牢) your garage door. One of the fastest ways for a home to receive damage is from an unsecured or weak garage door. Check your door to see whether it meets local requirements. 12
Remove unsecured items from around your house quickly. 13 Go around your yard and secure, store or throw away any objects found. You can store furniture in your yard in a pool or place it indoors or other safe storage.
A.If not, replace the door or hire a professional service to strengthen it.
B.There are several things you can do to defend your home against this threat.
C.This can be done after a hurricane is predicted.
D.Other common items to look for include trash cans and yard tools.
E.Measure the exact size of each window and door.
F.Protect your home's windows and doors.

5.From paragraph 1, we know__________.

A.It has high accuracy.
B.It can increase warning time.
C.It can monitor changeable sea levels.
D.It can adapt to various water wave conditions.
8.What's the best title for the text
A.Ways to Guard Against Tsunamis

How to protect a home from a hurricane
A hurricane is one of Mother Nature's most deadly creations. It takes place all over the world and can easily destroy unprotected homes. __9__ Some should be done well before hurricane season, while other measures can be taken after a hurricane alarm is issued (发布).
Protect your home from falling trees and branches. At the beginning of each hurricane season, examine all of the trees surrounding your house carefully. ___10__ If a tree is weakened, remove the tree completely. You may choose to remove small branches yourself or hire a professional tree care service.
__11__ Windows and doors breaking or opening during a hurricane can lead to great damage inside the home and possibly threaten the home's structure. You can buy specially designed hurricane shutters for each of the windows and doors in your house, or you can make your own.
Secure (缚牢) your garage door. One of the fastest ways for a home to receive damage is from an unsecured or weak garage door. Check your door to see whether it meets local requirements. __12__
Remove unsecured items from around your house quickly. __13__ Go around your yard and secure, store or throw away any objects found.
