Ⅲ.阅读理解
A
Charlie Chaplin, a British comedian, producer, writer, director and composer, is widely regarded as the greatest comic artist of the screen and one of the most important figures in film history.
Chaplin was named after his father, a British entertainer. He spent his early childhood with his mother, the singer Hannah Hall, after she and his father separated, and he took the place of his mentally unstable mother to appear on the stage. However, he and his mother were soon separated from each other because the sick Hall was sent to a hospital. Then, Charlie was sent to a series of boarding schools.
Using his mother's show-business contacts, Charlie became a professional entertainer in 1897 when he became a member of The Eight Lancashire Lads, a dancing group.
His early stage characters include a small role in William Gillette's Sherlock Holmes(1899). While touring America with the Karno company in 1913, Chaplin was signed to appear in Mack Sennett's Keystone comedy films. Though Making a Living(1914) was not the failure that historians have claimed, Chaplin's first screen character did not show him to the best advantage.
To come up with a more workable screen image, Chaplin created an outfit consisting of a too-small coat, too-large pants and a walking stick. As a finishing touch, he put on a mustache(小胡子). It was in his second Keystone film, Kid Auto Races at Venice(1914), that Chaplin's classic screen character, “the Little Tramp(流浪汉)”, was born.
In truth, Chaplin did not always play a tramp; in many of his films his character was employed as a waiter, store clerk, fireman, and the like. But the Tramp's attraction was universal: audiences loved his cheekiness(厚脸皮), unexpected bravery and especially his recovery in the face of difficulties which moved the audience most.
Some historians have traced the Tramp's origins to Chaplin's Dickensian childhood while others have suggested that the character had its roots in the motto of Chaplin's teacher, Fred Karno, “Keep it eager, gentlemen, keep it eager.” Whatever the case, Chaplin was the screen's biggest star.

Humor is a most effective yet frequently neglected means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used to patch up differences, apologize, say “no”, criticize, and get the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it is the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects which are so sensitive that a serious dialogue may start a riot(骚乱). For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.
Humor is often the best way to keep a small misunderstanding from escalating(加剧) into a big deal. Recently a neighbor of mine had a quarrel with his wife as she drove him to the airport. Airborne, he felt miserable, and he knew she did, too. Two hours after she returned home, she received a long-distance phone call. “Person-to-person for Mrs. I Apologize,” intoned the operator. “That's spelled ‘P’ as in...” In the twinkling of an eye, the whole day changed from bad to lovely at both ends of the wire.
An English hostess with a quick wit was giving a formal dinner for eight distinguished guests whom she wished to enlist(争取) in a major charity drive. Austerity was a fashion in England at the time, and she had asked her children to serve the meal. She knew that anything could happen and it did, just as her son, with the studied concentration of a tight rope walker, brought in a large roast turkey;he successfully elbowed the swinging dining-room door, but the backswing threw the bird onto the dining-room floor.
The boy stood rooted, the guests staring at their plates. Moving only her head, the hostess looked at her son and said,“No harm, Daniel. Just picking him up and taking him back to the kitchen”—she enunciated(发音) clearly so he would think about what she was saying—“and bring in another one.”
A wink and a one-liner(俏皮话) instantly changed the dinner from a red-faced embarrassment to laughter.
5.What caused the roast turkey to drop onto the floor
A.The son's rude behavior.
B.The bird raised by the family.
C.The backward movement of the door.
D.Someone who happened to be at the door.
6.What do you think would probably be the result if the hostess got angry and scolded the son
A.It would make the embarrassing situation worse.
B.The son would refuse to serve the guests any more.
C.The son would talk back and make the mother angrier.
D.The guests would leave before the dinner was over.
7.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Humor is the best way to criticize someone without his losing face.
B.Humor enables us to deal with difficult situations effectively.
C.Humor is the key to success in our work and lives.
D.Humor makes fun of any difficult situation.
