It has been five years since I left my staff job and became self-employed. I
remember my terror as I walked out of the office for the last time and the ex
citement when I sold my first piece days later. Working for yourself, setting y
our own hours and being responsible for your success or failure are exciting. I l
eft my job just as summer was starting, and my first few months were as bri
ght as the fair days.
When winter came, an office where someone else paid for the heating syste
m and my salary was guaranteed seemed attractive. January is tough for freel
ancers(自由职业者), and it was no different for me —— after masses of work,
I earned none. I shared my fears with some businesswo men I knew— what if
the reality would be more like what I was experiencing
Whether through choice or circumstance, the number of freelancers is risin
g and, if you' re just starting out, it is scary. I' ve been lucky that these women

You can't feel half-hearted about what you do because, at some point, you'
re going to have painful days. When that happens, you have to remember wh

you think might be more interesting, quit it for something you can't stop thin
king about.
Setting up a business is tough. Rather than waiting until all is perfect, go f
or the moment when it feels as if momentum(势头) is with you. Look after you
rself. There is no sick pay when you are self-employed. You can't do a bad day'
s work and blame it on your boss. You are the backbone of your business and y
ou need to prioritize your health and well-being. Rest regularly and find like-
minded people to support you and lift you up when things get hard.
Finally, enjoy it. Freedom is yours and. if you can make it work, there is no
thing better.

Tourists visiting Tokyo can now take part in a special tour of the city's modern wonder:pu
blic toilets. Penelope Panczuk recently went on a two-hour tour known as Tokyo Toilet Shuttle
to explore the city's artistic public bathrooms. She got the idea after seeing the Oscar-nomina
ted film Perfect Days, which describes the life of a toilet cleaner in the city's Shibuva district.
Among Japan's most-loved technological exports in recent years are its toilets produced b
yTOTO、The devices have cleansing sprays. heated seats, music, and more. In response to this t rend, the nonprofit Nippon Foundation started the Tokyo Toilet Project in 2020. It asked crea tors, including Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, to develop new toilets. The goal w
as to improve the functionality and artistry of 17 public toilets in the Shibuya district, making
them more welcoming and enjoyable for users.
While the project was not intended as a tourist attraction, Shibuya's government saw an o
pportunity to draw visitors to the area beyond its famous street crossing. The Tokyo ToiletShut
tle tour now takes visitors to nine unique public toilets, allowing visitors to explore the less-visit
ed parts of Shibuya while checking out the toilets. This is a highlight for visitors.
“In the U. S. or France, where I originally come from, you just don't go,” Panczuk said of u
sing public bathrooms. She added that in Tokyo, the bathrooms are extremely clean. It feels like
a new discovery every time she visits. Tourists pay $32.76 to visit nine different toilets in the
Shibuya district, each with unique designs. The toilets include one with clear walls that turn opa
que when users enter.Another is operated by voice commands. It's unusual, unique, and honestly

To show empathy (共情) is to identify with another's feelings. It is to emotionally put yourse lf in the place of another. The ability to empathize is directly dependent on your ability to feel y our own feelings and identify them.
If you have never felt a certain feeling, it will be hard for you to understand how another p
erson is feeling. If you have never put your hand in a flame, you will not know the pain of fire. If
you have not experienced jealousy (妒嫉), you will not understand its power. Reading about a fe eling and intellectually knowing about it is very different than actually experiencing it for yourse lf.
Among those with an equal level of emotional intelligence, the person who has ac
tually experienced the widest range and variety of feelings — the great depths of de
pression and the heights of fulfillment, for example — is the one who is most able to
empathize. On the other hand, when we say that someone“can't relate to” other peo
ple, it is likely because they haven't experienced, acknowledged or accepted many fee
lings of their own. Once you have felt discriminated(歧视) against, for example, it is
much easier to relate with someone else who has been discriminated against. Our em
otional intelligence gives us the ability to quickly recall those instances and form assoc
iations when we encounter discrimination again. We then can use the“reliving” of th
ose emotions to guide our thinking and actions. This is one of the ways nature slowly
evolves towards a higher level of survival.
For this process to work, the first step is that we must be able to experience our
own. emotions. This means we must be open to them and not distract ourselves from
them or try to numb(使麻木) ourselves from our feelings through drugs, alcohol, etc.
Next, we need to become aware of what we are actually feeling— to acknowledg
e . identify, and accept our feelings. Only then can we empathize with others. Th t is
one reason why it is important to work on your own emotional awareness and sensit
ivity — in other words, to be“in touch with” your feelings. 32. How does the author explain the feelings of empathy
A. By giving examples. B. By having classification.
C. By making comparison. D By providing data.
33. According to paragraph 3, which statement may the author agree with
A. Low empathy level leads to fewer feelings.
B. Empathy is a survival skill recently picked up.
C. Empathy is related to the depths of emotions.
D. Rich experiences of emotions may match high empathy.
34. What's the purpose of the last two paragraphs
A. To advise a sincere attitude to one's experiences.
B. To suggest a right understanding of empathy.
C. To recommend recognizing one's emotions. D. To call for true acceptance of one's identity.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. How Empathy Works B. Be Open to Your Emotions
C. Why Is Empathy Important D. Accept Your True Self
