23-year-old Rachna Kumari is a soft-spoken young woman selling her handmade wheat stalk paintings, a traditional cultural art form using natural wheat straw. Every morning, even before her mother awakens, she finishes cooking and cleaning before cycling 5km to run her shop alone. Over the past years, she has sold about 200 of her paintings.
However, back in 2019, Rachna almost gave up on life after having to leave school due to family’s financial problems. She became depressed, thinking she would have to spend the rest of her days doing household chores.
Around this time, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) came into the picture with Project Lehar, starting to provide vocational training, and courses on entreprencurship (创业) and life skills for young women. Project Lehar, run by AKF in partnership with The King’s Trust International, an organisation founded to tackle the crisis of youth unemployment, enables girls and young women from disadvantaged backgrounds to rediscover and realise their potential. This was a good opportunity for Rachna not just to continue her studies but also to convince her parents to drop her marriage plans.
After she was admitted into college through Project Lehar, she was also given some suggestions on entrepreneurial and career prospects. One such session regarding wheat stalk painting made her fall in love with this traditional art form and her creativity was brought out.
Now she is economically independent by selling wheat stalk paintings. However, Rachna is not resting on her achievements. Her shop also doubles up as a training centre where other girls from disadvantaged backgrounds like her who want to stand on their own feet get a second chance to change their lives like she did.
While teaching these enthusiastic young girls is a joyful experience, what gives Rachna more pride is being chosen as a wheat stalk painting trainer by the foundation. From being a trainee under this project to now becoming its qualified trainer, Rachna’s life has come full circle.
4. What left Rachna in low spirits initially
A. Losing her favourite job. B. Doing household chores.
C. Dropping out of school. D. Running the shop by herself.
5. How did Rachna benefit from Project Lehar
A. She got a degree from it. B. She had a new attitude towards marriage.
C. She managed to proceed with her studies. D. She was sponsored to start her own business.
6. What brings Rachna the greatest sense of achievement
A. Expanding her business scale. B. Being selected as a trainer.
C. Financing disadvantaged families. D. Teaching ambitious girls.
7. Which of the following best describes Rachna
A. Motivated and creative. B. Wealthy and independent.
C. Sociable and critical. D. Talented and modest.

For the past 20 years, I’ve searched libraries and the Internet for others who are thinking about the possible effect of the breakdown of multigenerational families. I’ve been surprised at how few resources exist on this topic. It’s the main reason I chose to finally write Family Revision.
While I’ve expected one of the countless marriage and family writers and thinkers to address this topic, none seem to really understand that the transition (转变) from multigenerational families to nuclear families is at the root of so many of the other symptoms they discuss.
Well, the silence on this topic was finally broken and it was not from a traditional family publication but from David Brooks, The New York Times columnist writing for The Atlantic. In an article nearly the length of a dissertation on this subject, Brooks masterfully exposes the root problem with the modern family.
In the article, Brooks wrote, “When we discuss the problems the country is facing, we don’t talk about family enough. It feels too judgmental, too uncomfortable, and maybe even too religious. But the fact is that the nuclear family has been collapsing in slow motion for decades, and many of our other problems — with education, mental health, and the quality of the labor force — stem from that breakdown. We have left behind the family structure of the past. For most people it’s not coming back.”
Many Americans are hungering to live in multigenerational families, in the way that is new and ancient at the same time. This is a significant opportunity, a chance to thicken and broaden family relationships, a chance to allow more adults and children to live and grow under the loving gaze of a dozen pairs of eyes, and be caught, when they fall, by a dozen pairs of arms. For decades we have been eating at smaller and smaller tables, with fewer and fewer relatives. It’s time for a change.
8. Which word can best describe the breakdown of multigenerational families
A. Damaging. B. Extraordinary. C. Meaningful. D. Ineffective.
9. What does the author think of Brooks’ article
A. It’s a tradition. B. It’s a victory.
C. It’s a comparison. D. It’s a breakthrough.
10. What can be inferred from Brooks’ article
A. Most Americans have health problems.
B. America is facing a sea change in society.
C. Focusing on family-related issues is urgent.
D People benefit from the present family structure.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the structure of multigenerational families
A. Dismissive. B. Approving. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.
D
Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare(噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched.
Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored.
While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS has undeniably transformed how we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with self-guided navigation. Over time, those who depended more on GPS showed a sharp decline in spacial memory and problem-solving skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can lead to discomfort. In seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort.
That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better outcomes. Research shows that mild stress can enhance adaptability. Neuroscience(神经科学) reveals that neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to form new connections—is enhanced through challenging experiences. This adaptability is crucial for developing resilience, (抗逆力), a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort.
But this doesn't mean we should reject comfort entirely; it's to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think of it as “microdosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the resilience we've buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck Choosing discomfort isn't easy, but sometimes, it's worth it.
12. What does the underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Possible to change. B. Certain to function.
C. Unlikely to be settled. D. Unable to be accepted.
13. What may digital conveniences cause according to the text
A. The fast but worthless relief. B. The meaningful engagement.
C. The loss of thinking capacity. D. The lack of necessary comfort.
14. Which is a real-life application of “microdosing hardship”
A. Taking the stairs instead of the lift. B. Ordering take-out food after work.
C. Exploring a new city by using GPS. D. Writing an email using voice-to-text.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. GPS: the invisible cost of convenience B. Stress: the main cause of brain damage
C. Discomfort: a hidden source of resilience D. Smartphones: barriers to human progress

It was a gloomy afternoon, with dark clouds hanging low in the sky, making the already old-fashioned campus seem even more deserted. After the last class of the day, I walked across the campus with my close classmate, Tom. As we neared a quiet corner beside the old library, a series of faint meowing sounds (猫叫声) pierced the stillness. Our curiosity piqued, we exchanged a glance and immediately traced the source of the noise.
Behind a messy stack of old boxes, we discovered a minuscule, emaciated cat. Its once-soft fur was now caked with dirt, and its small body trembled ever so slightly, a clear indication that it had suffered from days of hunger and cold. A profound sense of pity welled up within us. Tom bent down slowly, his hand extended gently, his voice soft as he tried to lead the frightened animal out. At first, the cat was frightened, its wide-eyed gaze fixed on us in fear. But gradually, after a few moments of cautious sniffing (嗅), it timidly stepped out from its hiding spot.
We knew we couldn’t abandon this helpless creature. Tom proposed taking it to the school infirmary (医务室), believing the school doctor might be able to assess its condition. I nodded in instant agreement, yet a tinge of worry crept in as we pondered how the school authorities would respond to us bringing a cat into the infirmary.
Just at that moment, Lily, a classmate with a kind heart and a skill of animal care, happened to pass by. The moment she laid eyes on the pitiful cat in our arms, her expression softened. She informed us that she had experience in dealing with stray (走失的) animals and eagerly offered her assistance. With Lily on board, our determination to save the cat grew tenfold. We held the cat gently and made our way towards the infirmary, filled with hope and a touch of nervousness.

On reaching the infirmary, the school doctor greeted us with a surprised look.

【答案】Dear Sir or Madam,
I am applying for the activity planner for the coming-of-age ceremony falling on Dec 30th.
This once-in-a-lifetime ceremony, I believe, is a golden opportunity to impress upon us students the significance of shouldering responsibility and fulfilling our obligation as a young adult.
To make this event memorable, firstly, we will invite the principal to deliver an inspiring speech articulating the real meaning of being a mature grown-up. Then, we will walk through the Longmen, a typical signifier of adulthood, with our parents, with photos taken to mark this special occasion.
Hope my creativity above will land me this position.
Yours sincerely,

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1:
On reaching the infirmary, the school doctor greeted us with a surprised look. However, after listening to our earnest plea and the cat’s tragic situation, her expression softened. She quickly got to work, conducting a thorough examination. She told us the cat was severely malnourished and had a respiratory infection. While treating the cat, she patiently explained to us the care it needed. We listened intently, absorbing every word, grateful for her expertise. With the doctor’s professional treatment, the cat’s breathing gradually became more stable, and we felt a glimmer of hope.
Paragraph 2:
Over the next few days, we took turns to take care of the cat. We divided the tasks among us. I was in charge of bringing fresh food and water every morning, Tom cleaned the cat’s temporary shelter, and Lily monitored its health closely. As the days passed, the cat’s condition improved remarkably. Its fur became smoother, and its eyes sparkled with newfound vitality. It even started to play with a small ball we brought for it. This experience not only saved a life but also strengthened the bond between us classmates. We realized that with unity and compassion, we could make a difference.
