Working animals, like horses, camels, cats and pigeons, help people a lot. Guide dogs, for
example, help blind people. For blind people, their dogs are not just helpers but also close friends.
This story shows the strong ties between a girl and her guide dog.
Jenny can’t see anything, but she has Charlie, her guide dog. For Jenny, Charlie isn’t just a
dog—he is her eyes and her best friend.
One day, Jenny and Charlie arrived at a hotel. “Good evening,” said the doorman. “You’re
welcome to stay, but I’m sorry that we don’t welcome pets here.” “Charlie isn’t a pet,” said Jenny.
“He’s my eyes. I can’t go anywhere without him.” The doorman said sorry and showed Jenny and
Charlie to their room.
Jenny was very tired. She was asleep soon. Some time later, Charlie started barking (吠叫)
Jenny woke up and smelt smoke. A fire! Smoke started to come in from under the door. With
Charlie’s help, Jenny put some wet towels (毛巾) under the door. Then she got down on the floor
next to Charlie and waited.
A fireman came and helped Jenny get out, but he did not take Charlie. But Charlie stayed
close to Jenny and wouldn’t leave her. Jenny hugged Charlie in her arms and said, “He’s my eyes.
I can’t go anywhere without him.” The fireman was deeply moved by the ties between the two.
