Two Canadian teenagers, Faiz and Leo, really like challenges. Their most recent achievement was following the Lake Ontario coastline for 73 kilometers, walking from Toronto to Hamilton, Canada, in about 18 hours.
“We enjoy trying new things that are good for our bodies and minds. We like to overcome challenges like these. And we feel going on a long walk seems to be really meaningful,” Leo said.
With very little preparation, the two 16-year-olds began their journey at 6 a. m., starting in darkness and finishing before midnight. They took several breaks, stopping at places with nice sights along the way.
On their walk, one of the interesting things was an old ship. “You’d be surprised by the things you see when you’re taking your time walking. You can’t see them when you’re driving,” said Leo.
However, the journey was not only a challenge for bodies but also an important test of minds. There were moments of loneliness for the pair, but they always supported each other.
Around 70 km into the walk, they met a person on a bridge who seemed to be very unhappy. “I wasn’t sure what was going to happen to me and Leo. We tried to talk him out of it and ended up calling the police. Luckily, everyone was OK,” Faiz said.
The walk is now long over but Faiz and Leo don’t want to stop, with plans to start a two-day 100 km walk in the near future.

In difficult times, art can bring hope and happiness to people’s lives. Colleen Wall, an artist, paints beautiful murals (壁画) in hospitals to help patients feel better. Her goal is to give them a “window view” of nature, allowing them to imagine being in peaceful, sunny places instead of hospital rooms.
Colleen first became interested in this work in 1995 when she had cancer (癌症) herself. After getting better, she decided to help other patients through art. One day, while volunteering at a hospital, she happily said to a patient, “It’s such a beautiful day outside!” The patient sadly said, “It always looks the same from here.” This conversation deeply moved Colleen and inspired her to start her project—“A View for a Room.” She wanted to change hospital rooms by creating paintings that looked like windows to nature.
After raising enough money for her project, Colleen created 20 large paintings. Each one shows lovely natural views like forests, beaches, and country roads. The paintings also have uplifting messages like “Stay Strong” and “Hope Heals” to cheer patients up. Doctors say that looking at nature pictures can actually help people feel less pain and get better, making Colleen’s work even more meaningful. Many patients say the colorful murals make their rooms brighter and happier. For Colleen, this work is special because she understands what patients are going through. “I want to share the same hope that helped me when I was sick,” she says.
9. Why did Colleen paint murals in hospitals
A. To make hospital walls look more colorful. B. To help doctors work in a better environment.
C. To teach people how to paint beautiful art. D. To give patients a feeling of being in nature.
10. What made Colleen start her project “A View for a Room”
A. Her study on mural paintings. B. Her conversation with a patient.
C. Her need to raise money for art. D. Her love for painting nature scenes.
11. What does the underlined word “uplifting” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Encouraging. B. Tiring. C. Interesting. D. Surprising.
12 Which words best describe Colleen according to the passage
A. Kind and creative. B. Quiet and helpful. C. Outgoing and humorous. D. Talented and honest.

My name is Will Charouhis and I live in Miami, in the U.S. state of Florida. The city is known for its warm weather and many beautiful beaches. It’s very popular with tourists. However, scientists say it’s in trouble. Because of climate change (气候变化), the sea level is rising. By 2070, the city will probably be under two feet of water.
Life will be hard then. I know this because I once experienced the effects of climate change. It was September 2017. Hurricane Irma (飓风“厄玛”) hit Florida. It caused serious flooding in Miami. My city was almost completely underwater. For days, I thought about what I could do. How could I help to stop this from happening again
I became interested in mangroves. These trees grow in or near water. They are good at taking in greenhouse gases from the air. They can also protect cities against rising seas. I started the “A Million Mangroves” project. I asked people to help protect mangroves.
Three years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic (疾病大流行) shut down the world. I couldn’t go to school. Neither could I spend time with my friends indoors. But I could work along Florida’s coastlines for months. I planted more than six miles of new mangroves.
I’ll go on planting trees and teach people about the importance of protecting trees. It’s useless to just be afraid of climate change. Turn your tear into action. We can all do something to save our planet.
13. Why is Miami very popular with tourists
A. Because of the climate change. B. Because of the nice weather and beaches.
C. Because of the rising sea level. D. Because of many beautiful mountains.
14. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Hurricane Irma
A. It hit Florida three years ago. B. Miami was totally underwater because of it.
C. It was the result of climate change. D. There were floods all over the state of Florida.
15. What did Charouhis do during the COVID-19 pandemic
A. He planted many trees in his school. B. He often invited his friends to his home.
C. He planted mangroves along Florida’s coastlines. D. He thought about how to prevent hurricanes.
16. What does Charouhis wish people to do
A. To take a holiday in Miami. B. To spend time with friends.
C. To show fear of climate change. D. To do something to save the Earth.
17. Which magazine does this article probably come from
A. News. B. Fashion. C. Technology. D. Environment.

From food lovers to exercise and travel partners, young people have been looking for new ways to connect with others and share their hobbies. A popular way to do so is through dazi socializing (社交).
The word dazi comes from the Shanghai dialect (方言). People first used it to talk about card-playing friends. Now, it refers to (指代) the partners who take part in certain activities together. And a dazi is not like a close friend. People usually don’t have a long and strong friendship with their dazi.
Recently, more people are trying to find a dazi to enjoy food, go on a trip, or study together. Xiaomei is one of them.
Xiaomei, born in 1999, is an office worker in Shenzhen. She has looked for travel partners more than once. In March, Xiaomei went to Gansu Province and found a travel partner there. She also found another dazi during the trip. The three had a good time together during the journey.
“We later started a chat group on WeChat, and we often shared good books. Starting as travel partners, we have become friends. I think I’m lucky.” Xiaomei said.
However, the dazi culture doesn’t come without risks. Although looking for a dazi is not difficult, finding a perfect or nice dazi is not easy. Remember to be careful and pay attention to personal safety when looking for a dazi.

An Experience of Helping a Neighbor
Last Sunday morning, when I was doing my homework at home, I heard weak voice from next door. It was my elderly neighbor, Mrs. Li. She had accidentally fallen down and couldn't get up.
I quickly ran to her house. First, I helped her sit on the sofa and asked if she was seriously hurt. Then, I gave her a glass of water to calm her down. After that, I called her daughter, who rushed back home soon.
Mrs. Li thanked me repeatedly. Her daughter also said I was really helpful. This experience made me realize that helping those in need is not only a kind act but also makes me feel happy and fulfilled. It encourages me to be more ready to lend a hand in the future.
