A woman named Ruth Lambert with Alzheimer’s disease has gained widespread attention online. Ruth was born in Ohio in 1937. After her family moved to Cincinnati, she studied at the University of Cincinnati. After graduation, she married her sweetheart. They had a happy 62-year marriage with four children, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
“Grandma always had fun crafts (手艺) for us to do, and made up songs and games to play...definitely the teacher in her!” Ruth’s granddaughter Woodford shared. Woodford described her grandma as an incredibly supportive figure, always present at grandchildren’s events with smiles on her face.
But around the age of 79, Ruth was found suffering from Alzheimer s disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, early in the disease, people may be aware of having trouble remembering things and thinking clearly. Over time, memory gets worse and other symptoms (症状) occur. So Ruth’s husband helped her move into a retirement community. In 2021, her daughters moved her to an assisted living facility and then to a memory care wing. The doctors there told Ruth’s family that brief moments when memories resurface are highly beneficial for the patient, who gets to see the person she once knew.
On New Year’s Day, Woodford invited Marilyn, who had been close friends with the Lamberts for decades, for dinner as a surprise for her grandma. “To our delight, grandma recognizes Marilyn. They sit and talk and laugh, and it’s absolutely precious. What’s really amazing is that Marilyn is still extremely sharp, and she is 92!” Woodford explained.
The holiday reunion (团聚) of Ruth and Marilyn has deeply moved many people, who shared their own experiences in the comments. It has made people realize the importance of treasuring every moment with their loved ones.
4. What can we know about Ruth from the first paragraph
A. She has a loving family. B. She is into digital products.
C. She used to be a teacher. D. She was born in Cincinnati.

A. To pass down a long-held tradition. B. To honour a sharp-eyed neighbour.
C. To help her grandma recall memories. D. To give a complete surprise to Marilyn.
7. What does the text mainly talk about
A. An old people’s home. B. A heartwarming story.
C. An inspiring teenager. D. A laboratory experiment.

Researchers have discovered the remains of a medieval (中世纪的)city in the mountains of southeastern Uzbekistan, high above the Silk Road. This finding was made possible by drones (无人机)equipped with lidar, a remote sensing method that can create detailed 3D maps.
The main city, called Tugunbulak, was active between the 6th and 11th centuries. It is located at about 7,200 feet above sea level—comparable to Machu Picchu in Peru. The remains cover nearly 300 acres, making it one of the largest regional settlements of its time. Lidar images showed five watchtowers connected by walls along the mountain ridges, as well as a central fortress protected by thick stone and mud-brick walls.
It’s hard to picture cities of this size growing in a snow-covered environment with strong winds. The long winters and dry land made large-scale farming nearly impossible—a fact that may explain why historians mostly overlooked this remote region for so long.
Yet experts believe these high cities were more than just places to live. Tugunbulak’s location would have made it easier to harness strong mountain winds for metalworking. Researchers have found what appears to be a workshop where ancient smiths (铁匠)may have made swords, armor, or tools. “By mid-morning, the ground heats from the sun and winds rush up the mountainsides, perfect conditions for metalworking,” explains Michael Frachetti, who leads the study.
Frachetti thinks Tugunbulak’s economy relied heavily on blacksmithing and other metalwork. Iron and steel were in high demand and these mountains likely supplied metal goods to traders on the Silk Road.
For years, historians focused on lowland kingdoms of Uzbekistan, often ignoring the highlands. The discovery of Tugunbulak shows that mountain communities had complex societies, and busy economies. “Further research will throw more light on who these people were, but it’s already clear that they developed their own ways of life, separate from the typical agricultural societies of their time,” says Fazchetti.
8. What did the researchers discover in southeastern Uzbekistan
A. A perfect place to test advanced drones.
B. A scientific method of surveying the land.
C. The farming practices in the mountain areas.
D. The remains of an ancient city in the mountains.
9. Why did historians mostly ignore the highland region
A. It was explored in the 11th century. B. It is packed with sand in summer.
C. It is too challenging for agriculture. D. It once featured a large population.
10. What does the underlined word “harness” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Use. B. Stop. C. Record. D. Survive.
11. What can we infer about the finding
A. It focuses on lowland kingdoms of Uzbekistan.
B. It offers new insights into mountain populations.
C. It shows the mountain areas are under-developed.
D. It explains agricultural societies are advantageous.

Dolphins are some of the noisiest and smartest animals in the ocean. They live in groups and use many different sounds—clicks, whistles (哨声), and buzzing noises—to communicate with each other and find their way underwater.
One of the most interesting things about dolphins is that they use special whistles as names. These “signature whistles” are unique to each dolphin. The whistles are produced by one individual and repeated by another—like saying “Jeff, Jeff”—to re-establish contact. This shows dolphins can learn and remember sounds, which is a big step for animal communication.
But dolphins have-another talent: they appear to be using a wide range of whistles that are not names. So far, researchers have identified 22 of these “non-signature whistles” used by dozens of dolphins.
“We have these non-signature whistles that seem like they could function like words of some kind, with specific meanings,” says Laela Sayigh, a marine biologist, Two of the whistles—with the catchy names NSWA and NSWB—seem to have special uses, one sounding an alarm, the other asking a question, respectively.
The research comes from the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program in Florida. For over 40years, scientists have been recording dolphin sounds using special underwater microphones and tags (标签) attached to the dolphins’ backs. These tags record high-quality sounds and movement underwater, helping scientists build a huge library of dolphin calls.
In one case, two dolphins heard their own signature whistles played from a speaker. They answered with the NSWB whistle—maybe asking, “What’s going on ” In another case, when NSWA was played, many dolphins swam away, which made researchers think it might be an alarm sound.
Although it’s still too early to say dolphins have a full language like humans, clearly there’s a lot of complexity in what they do as it is. They use names, ask questions, and maybe even warn each other of danger. If any animal can “talk” in a language-like way, dolphins might just be the best example we have.
12. What is the purpose of “signature whistles” for dolphins
A. To attract their mates. B. To identify themselves.
C. To drive away hunters. D. To find food underwater.
13. Why do scientists conduct the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program
A. To train dolphins to perform tasks. B. To build a theme park about dolphins.
C. To ensure dolphins live in clean waters. D. To study dolphin sounds and movement.
14. One dolphin probably produces the NSWA whistle when ______ .
A. the food is sufficient. B. it greets another dolphin.
C. a danger is approaching. D. it wants to ask a question.
15. What can be learned about dolphin communication from the text
A. It is quite easy to understand. B. It is a fully developed language.
C. It is available to a range of sea life. D. It is complex with various functions.

My friend Clara and I were excited to join our school’s nature exploration camp last weekend. It was the first time we had ever taken part in such an outdoor adventure, and we couldn’t wait to explore the national park. Early Saturday morning, after a short safety briefing from our instructor Mr. Turner, we set off on the hiking trail (小径) with our backpacks, water bottles, and maps. Everyone was full of energy and excitement.
The sun was shining, birds were singing, and the light wind made the air feel fresh and clean. As we walked along the narrow dirt path, we chatted happily and took photos of wildflowers, butterflies, and even a deer in the distance. After two hours of hiking, we reached a hilltop that offered a breathtaking view of the green valley below. We sat on a big rock, ate some snacks, and laughed as we shared our favorite parts of the trip so far.
Then Clara pointed to a spot on the map. “There’s a waterfall nearby,” she said. “Let’s go to find it!” I agreed, and we decided to explore a little deeper into the woods. We told Mr. Turner and he reminded us not to go too far. The deeper we walked, the quieter it became. The tall trees blocked out most of the sunlight, and the path beneath our feet became slippery (滑的) with leaves and moss.
About half an hour later, we heard the sound of rushing water and quickened our pace (步伐),excited to finally see the waterfall. But just as we thought we were close, the sky suddenly darkened. The wind picked up, and the thunder rolled in the distance. I looked at Clara, and for the first time that day, I saw worry on her face. We had no umbrellas and were far from the main trail. We hesitated, unsure whether to turn back or move forward.

My Views on the Life in the Future
I’m convinced that our lives will undergo remarkable changes in ten years. Firstly, transportation will be revolutionized. Flying cars will be common, allowing us to travel faster and more conveniently. Secondly, our homes will become smarter, where intelligent appliances will be able to learn our habits and preferences. Thirdly, environmental protection will be highly valued. Many buildings will be covered with solar panels to generate clean energy, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
These changes are driven by the advances in technology and our growing demand for a more sustainable lifestyle. I believe the future life will be full of surprises and excitement. Thank you!
47. One possible version:
The first drop of rain fell on my face as the thunder rolled again. We looked up nervously as the sky turned almost completely dark. Within minutes, rain poured down, soaking our clothes and blurring our vision. I grabbed Clara’s arm as a flash of lightning lit up the forest. “We can’t stay here!” she cried. The narrow trail was now muddy and hard to follow. I could barely see where we were stepping, but we had no choice. I pulled her gently and pointed ahead, “Let’s move — quickly, before it gets worse.”
We held hands and struggled through the dark forest. Branches scratched our arms and legs as we rushed forward, dodging rocks and fallen logs. My heart pounded with fear, but I knew we had to stay calm. Just as I was concerned that we were completely lost, we spotted a small wooden sign. “Main Trail — 200 meters,” it read. We followed the arrow and soon heard voices. Mr. Turner and two classmates were waiting for us with flashlights. At that moment, I finally felt safe again.
