Playing social games is an excellent way to stay occupied during winter. Read on as we
look at some of our favourite social games.
Slots
Millions of people developed a passion for slots during their young age, which often stays
with them into adulthood. Operators offer hundreds of different titles to suit every budget level,
making them a great way to spend your social time.
Bingo
Bingo was a main social activity for the working class in the UK after World War II and
remains popular today. Land-based venues still host games regularly, although most players
favor modern bingo sites where they can interact with others via attached chatrooms. It can also
be played “live” with friends and family at home, and even incorporate a winter theme.
Poker
While the Internet makes it easy to access poker games, we prefer organising a “poker
night” at home with friends and family. You can set up a game that costs just a few pounds. A
single game with five or six players can take two or three hours, making it the perfect platform
to build a social get-together.
Upwords
Players are required to build words using letter tiles on a gameboard. Letters can be piled
on top of others already on the board to create new words. The higher the pile of letters, the
more points are scored, which typically makes words built later in the game more valuable.
21. Which activity might recall memories of the childhood
A. Slots. B. Bingo. C. Poker. D. Upwords.
22. What do Bingo and Poker have in common
A. They both suit every budget level.
B. They can be both played online and offline.
C. They can both be combined with a winter theme.
D. They both originated in the UK during World War II.
23. What is the main purpose of this text
A. To persuade people to stay occupied in winter.
B. To introduce different creative types of winter sports.
C. To recommend some popular social games for winter.
D. To compare the differences between various social games.

As a mushroom scientist, you are vastly outnumbered, with estimates suggesting that there
are between 2.2 million and 3.8 million species of fungi (真菌), the majority of which are yet
to be identified. However, professionals in the field are not alone in their efforts to uncover new
species. An enthusiastic community of amateurs has emerged, bridging the gap between
professionals and non-professionals. These amateurs have even made significant discoveries.
One such amateur is Taylor Lockwood, a 74-year-old mushroom enthusiast and professional
photographer.
In 1984, while living on the Mendocino coast of California, Taylor Lockwood developed a
fascination with mushrooms. “Outside my cottage were these amazing mushrooms,” he says.
“And it was as if these mushrooms looked at me and said, ‘Taylor, go out and tell the world
how pretty we are.” Lockwood answered their call and purchased camera equipment to capture
their true nature. His passion for photographing mushrooms was so intense that he would even
dig holes next to the mushrooms to get the perfect angle for his shots.
In the Monongahela National Forest, Taylor Lockwood discovered an unusual mushroom
that looked like tiny fingers wearing off-white gloves. Upon deeper investigation, fungi
researcher Amy Rossman confirmed that it was a “hazel glove” mushroom, which is a rare find.
“Mushrooms are not like plants,” Rossman says. “They don’t come up at the same time every
year, and so sometimes it can be decades between when a fungus fruits.” Rossman says that’s
why it’s so valuable to have people like Taylor Lockwood searching through the forest with a
trained eye.
A few years ago, Taylor Lockwood realized that still photos weren’t sufficient, so he chose
to create time-lapse (延时拍摄的) videos of mushrooms. “When I do time-lapse, I see so much
life happening around the mushrooms—insects, worms and other small creatures interacting
with them,” he says. Lockwood’s love for art is evident in his approach to filming mushrooms
over time. Although he appreciates the scientific aspect of his work, he identifies himself as an
artist at heart.
24. What can we learn about mushroom amateurs from paragraph 1
A. They keep close track of the growth of fungi.
B. They help identify new species of mushroom.
C. They replace professional scientists in the field.
D. They classify the majority of mushroom species.
25. What inspired Lockwood to photograph mushrooms
A. His desire for knowledge.
B. His curiosity about nature.
C. The beauty of nearby mushrooms.
D. The appeal of outdoor photography.
26. Why did Lockwood decide to make time-lapse videos of mushrooms

3D printing, a technology that creates objects layer by layer, has revolutionized the way
we make things. Recently, a group of Chinese scientists took things a step further by using this
technology to create realistic reproductions of human organs.
Human organs have various textures (质地 ) with our bones being the hardest and the
brains being the softest, which made it demanding to create a single material that could print
different human organs previously. The research team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences
started by using hydrogel, a soft gel-like (类凝胶) material as the main ingredient. To replicate
the hardness of material like bone, the researchers added elements containing metal to the
hydrogel and adjusted their ratio to create the texture of each organ. However, the structure
inside human organs is also incredibly complicated with many interweaving channels. To make
sure the printing results are correct, the team used light-curing technology in the 3D printing
process. A special lamp was placed under the printing machine, causing the gel to become solid
right after it was printed.
According to the team’s published paper, they were able to produce organ models
including the brain, lungs, which are essential for research purposes, such as testing medical
equipment and demonstrating pared to live organs and animal models, these are
also ethically acceptable since they’re printed artificially. They can help researchers develop
new treatments more efficiently, due to their lower relative cost.
However, they usually cannot be used as transplants, because human cells probably
recognize them as “enemies” and start to fight against them. What scientists have been
exploring in “printing” the organs is bioprinting: using 3D printing technology to build up
various types of cells and materials layer by layer. This way, the printed product will be more
acceptable to grow inside the human body. However, this method is still developing, and
experts are hoping it’ll be used in the medical field within a decade.
28. What made it challenging to print human organs formerly
A. The complexity of human organs.
B. The high cost of printing materials.
C. The difficulty in creating various materials.
D. The lack of appropriate printing technology.

29. What is a benefit of 3D organ models according to the text
A. They can fully replace animal testing.
B. They can be used to test surgical tools.
C. They work even better than live organs.
D. They are easily made and relatively affordable.
30. What does the underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Efficient new treatments.
B. The objects created layer by layer.
C. Various textures of human organs.
D. The organ models created with hydrogel.
31. What is a suitable title for the text
A. The Innovative Material Used for Printing Human Organs
B. The Most Advanced Technology in Creating Realistic Objects
C. Producing Lifelike Copies of Human Organs by 3D Printing
D. Making Organ Models Acceptable to Grow Inside the Human Body

Expecting the worst to avoid feeling bad later is known as “bracing”. It may help them
prepare for emotionally challenging situations, particularly in the moments before these
situations occur. People brace for the worst while awaiting potentially negative outcomes.
Someone might also brace for the worst in anticipation of stressful events like giving a
presentation at work.
Some psychological theories suggest that bracing should help. For example, “decision
affect theory” proposes that how we feel about a situation is determined partly by comparing
what actually happened with what could have happened. Based on this, people should be happy
when an event goes beyond their expectations, and disappointed when an event falls behind.
Therefore, by anticipating the worst, one can safeguard themselves against future
disappointment, as any result is likely to surpass their expectations.
Other psychological theories, nevertheless, undermine the idea that bracing will be helpful.
It has been theorized and scientifically established that expectations can powerfully influence
reality. There are two key ways that expectations can shape reality.
First, people may behave in ways that fit with their expectations. If you expect to fail an
upcoming test or interview, then you might not invest efforts in preparation, which in turn
reduces your chances of doing well. Second, people may interpret a situation in line with their
expectations. Imagine you believe you are insufficiently qualified for a job you’ve applied for.
During the job interview, you’re likely to interpret blank expressions from the interviewer in
line with this belief, which could negatively affect your performance. In fact, the interviewer
did not want to give anything away.

{#{QQABLQYh5wAQkhQACA76F0UeCAuQkICSJYomRQCaqARKSANABAA=}#}
Drawing together the scientific studies, it seems that expecting the worst is anything but a
wise way to prepare for upcoming news or results. It might be more sensible to hold positive
expectations than to brace for the worst.
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The logic of preparing for the worst.
B. The theory of comparing past and future.
C. The conflict between people’s expectation and reality.
D. The emotions hidden behind anticipating the worst.
33. What does the underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Strengthen. B. Propose. C. Weaken. D. Justify.
34. How can negative expectations probably affect people’s performance in reality
A. By reducing people’s chances of doing well.
B. By stimulating people’s ambition and motivation.
C. By giving weight to people’s potential of excellence.
D. By causing less preparation and some misinterpretations.
35. Which would the author most likely agree with regarding “bracing for the worst”
A. It fully guarantees people a positive emotional experience.
B. It may bring more drawbacks than benefits in practice.
C. It is a universal solution for handling difficult situations.
D. It has no impact on how people view real-life events.

Conversations are like two-way streets: we take turns speaking and listening. While we
often focus on what we say, there’s something profoundly positive in the act of listening.
___36___ But here’s where it gets tricky: being a good listener isn’t easy. It can be emotionally
draining, especially in tough conversations.
My colleagues and I recently explored the downsides of listening in a study with school
teachers. We asked the teachers how much effort they put into listening to their students. And
we found that the more effort teachers put into listening, the more they reported feeling burned
out. Why does this happen For teachers, listening isn’t just about hearing words. ___37___
This can be incredibly draining, especially when teachers feel responsible for solving problems
they may not have the resources or time to address.
This isn’t just a problem for teachers, it affects all of us. Whether we’re parents, partners,
friends, or colleagues, we all find ourselves in situations where we have to listen to others’
worries and stresses. And without realizing it, we absorb that emotional weight. ___38___ In a
world where we’ re constantly connected, we need to be aware of the emotional costs of

listening.
___39___ First, focus on listening without planning your response. This keeps you
present and allows the speaker to feel truly heard. Second, understand that sometimes listening
is enough; don’t feel you have to fix the problem. ___40___ Finally, don’t always feel like you
have to reflect. When someone is sharing a deeply negative experience, like the loss of loved
ones, reflecting those emotions back to them may only deepen their pain.
Ultimately, while listening is one of the most powerful tools we have for connection, it’s
important to know when to fully engage and when to take a step back to protect our own
well-being.
A. So, how can we listen without burning out
B. How can we fix their problems while listening
C. Often listening, even without taking action, is healing.
D. Over time, this emotional burden can wear us down, leading to burnout.
E. It involves absorbing their students’ emotional challenges and struggles.
F. As is often the case, attentive listening brings unintended bad consequences.
G. It can build trust, strengthen bonds, and expand our understanding of the world.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly
educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this ” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few
minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this ” The son said, “Father, I
told you just now. It’s a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is
this ” At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his
father. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth
time, “What is this ”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question
again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’ Are you not able to
understand this ”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept
since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page: Today my little
son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window.
My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I
hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel angry, but
instead felt affection for my innocent son.

第二节
After reading the diary, the son was in tears and began to reflect on what he did to his
father. He realized how patient and loving his father had been when he was just a child, eagerly
asking the same question over and over again. The father had not only answered each time with
kindness but had also embraced him warmly, showing unconditional love and patience. The son
felt a deep sense of shame and regret for his own impatience and anger towards his father. He
thought about how time had passed, and now the roles had reversed, with his father needing the
same patience and understanding that he had once received.
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. With a heavy heart, he
gently took his father’s hand. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him
for his bad behavior. He said aloud, “I promise to make you happy forever, Dad. It is you who
have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. I will
serve you in the best way.” The father looked at his son with a mixture of sadness and forgiveness
in his eyes. From that day on, he made a promise to himself to always treat his father with the

We’ll keep him in hospital for further observation.

use.
M: I know that you have already got millions of followers. What makes you stand out
W: That’s possibly because I do it in a little different way. You know, I am a funny person. I think
the audience like jokes.
M: No wonder you are so popular among young people. But is there anything that bothers you
as an influencer

Though social media and messaging apps have taken over some of the roles from email as
a form of communication, email is likely to keep an important role for business communication
in the future. Surprisingly, though, a lot of companies and organizations lack formal guidelines
for emailing. As most of you will soon be entering the workforce, I would like to share with you
my own rules for emailing. If someone sends you an email, reply to the sender to acknowledge
the email. It’s not necessary to reply to a mass email sent to numerous people. But it’s common
politeness to respond to a personal message, preferably within 24 hours of receiving it. It’s also
important to use proper English. Think of an email as a letter. Spelling, grammar and even the
format should not be overlooked. And finally, never use capitals to emphasize a word or words
in an email. It’s the same as shouting loudly. All right. That’s as deep as the explanation goes.
Now I’m going to open up for questions.
