Text 1
W: Good morning, sir! What can I do for you
M: (1)I’m looking for a book about chocolate. It’s called The History of
Chocolate.
W: You are lucky. (1)There’s only one copy left on the shelf and it’s on sale now.
Text 2
W: I got a ticket this morning.
M: Were you parking in the wrong place
W: No. (2)I was running late and didn’t notice the speed limit.
Text 3
M: I heard Bruce quit his job at a big company and left this city.
W: Yes. (3)He has his own plan—go back to where he comes from and build his
dream house.
Text 4
W: We need to arrive at the station at 11 a. m. tomorrow, right
M: No. (4)All passengers are required to arrive at the station half an hour before
their train. So we need to be there before 9:30.
Text 5
M: Why didn’t someone say my dinner was ready It has almost gone cold.
W: Philip. (5)I told you it was ready before you went upstairs. Then I sent your

W: I am so excited to be at the music festival!
M: That makes two of us!
W: The last time I went to a music festival was three years ago.
M: (6)Didn’t you attend one in Xiamen at this time last year
W: (6)Oh, yes. I forgot it. I was only there for a moment. Well, there is a free face
painting service. I would like to try it. The sun painted on that girl’s face is beautiful.
M: I want the cloud pattern. What about you
W: (7)I like roses these days, you know.
M: OK. Let’s go.
Text 7
W: Jamar. (8)I really like the river view. What do you think of this apartment
M: It’s great, Lara. And the apartment seems very spacious. But it seems awfully far
from our current health club. And I don’t think we could give that up.
W: (9)This complex has its own health club and swimming pool. It’s all located in
the basement of the main building. I’ll show you on our way out.
M: That sounds fantastic! I noticed there is a supermarket near the entrance to the
community. And it seems they have parking space here, too.
W: But do remember, you are only allowed one vehicle per apartment. (10)Parking
here is quite limited.
M: With such close access to public transportation, it shouldn’t be too much of a
problem. It will be a comfortable place after we set up the furniture.

W: Michael. (11)Thanks for sparing some time to answer a few questions.
M: No worries.
W: You’ve stayed here for about a year. So what brought you here
M: Well. I lived in Toronto, but our team are based out of Montreal. So I live and
train here. Now I’m working my way towards the winter Olympic games in Milan, so
I seldom visit my family in Toronto.
W: It must be a challenge. So what does your schedule look like
M: Well, for a normal week, we have anywhere between seven to ten ice sessions.
Sharpening our skills on the ice is the main part of our training, but we also received
various kinds of other training as well, biking, running, etc. (12)So it’s a full
schedule.
W: I am also wondering how you got into speed-skating.
M: Well, I started speed skating at four when my brother was in it. I went with him
and found I was really into it. He quit a long time ago, because he just couldn’t see his
future in speed-skating. (13)But I think I’m on the right track. I’m ready for the
challenges ahead.
W: Thank you, Michael. We look forward to your excellent performance.

M: Wild Animal Park, hello.
W: Oh, hello! I’m ringing to ask whether you have any jobs available.
M: Uh, what sort of work are you looking for Is that a permanent or a part time, or…
W: (14)Actually, I’m just looking for temporary work. I’m a student.
M: Oh, right. When are you available to start work
W: (15)I’ll finish college on the eighth of July. But I can’t start work till the
eleventh because I’ve got a hospital appointment on the tenth of July.
M: No problem. Do you have any particular kind of work in mind
W: Well, I’ll do anything. And I have worked as an assistant animal keeper before
when I was still in high school. But I am studying at a college now, (16)and I’d
really like to get some experience as an assistant cook if possible.
M: Right. So that’s your first choice. Have you done that kind of job before
W: No. But I’ve helped my aunt sometimes. She runs a café in Newcastle.
M: Good. (17)I’ll pass your application on, and you will get a reply in a few days.
W: Thanks very much, bye!
Text 10
The old tree has been around for more than 200 years, standing at the entrance of
my village. This tree is so big that it takes two people to hug it properly. When I was a
kid heading to school in town, I would walk past it every day. Back then, I was too
worried about staying fed and warm to think much of it—it was just a tree, as
ordinary as any rock on the side of the road.
Then, after years of hard study, waiting for my college letter, I found myself staring
at that tree, hoping for good news. Days passed when it felt like, somehow, this tree
and I had built up this connection, this friendship. And guess what The letter came!
When I went to the city for college that September, walking past that tree hit me
hard. I looked back, and through its branches, I could see my home, my family
waving goodbye. After my college graduation when I was 21, I chose to work in a
village. There were times I just felt the urge to see that tree and my family, so I would
walk those thirty kilometers of mountain roads.
And you know what (18)When I got into writing, that tree found its way into
my stories. I am successful. However, (19)when I find myself stuck in my writing,
I will go back to see it. It’s fortunate how a tree I once passed without a second
thought has become such a big part of my life. (20全文理解)
