Yiran Duan, a Bai ethnic minority member from Dali, Yunnan, founded Yi Crafts to share traditional Chinese handicrafts globally. After graduating from a UK university in 2019, she launched her studio to promote cultural exchange. During the later COVID-19 pandemic, however, she was forced to move her studio online, unexpectedly expanding her reach worldwide. “A crisis is also an opportunity,” she remarked.
While an opportunity, teaching online is not the same as speaking face to face. So in 2022, Yiran set up her official studio in London, emphasizing face-to-face interaction. She said, “Exchanges are not merely verbal communication. A glance, a smile, or a touch can change one’s mind.” Her workshops highlight crafts like Zharan, a tie-dye technique often mistaken for Japan’s Shibori. “Many think it’s Japanese, but its roots are in China,” she explains, noting its 1,000-year history.
Yiran views cultural exchange as mutual (相互的) learning. During a 2024 trip to Dali, British visitors joined Bai elders in singing. Surprisingly, a local song’s melody (旋律) matched a British folk tune. “They felt the culture without words,” Yiran realized. She stresses common human joys — beauty, food, art — over differences.
Misunderstandings still exist. Once asked if she was native American due to her braided hair (编发),Yiran replied, “I’m Chinese, part of an ethnic minority.” She aims to challenge stereotypes (刻板印象) of China as a single culture. “The West knows dragons or china, but China has diverse beauty,” she said.
Growing up on Dali’s “foreign street,” Yiran learned English informally. “My unique childhood made me realize my voice matters,” she shared. Her advice “Never think no one listens. Every story deserves to be heard.”
Through handicrafts, Yiran builds bridges — not just between places, but between hearts. “The bridge matters, but the people willing to cross it matter more,” she smiled.
4. Why did Yiran Duan move her studio online
A. To attract more British customers.
B. To avoid face-to-face communication.
C. To respond to the impact of the pandemic.
D. To learn from international handicraft masters.
5. What can we infer from the British visitors’ trip
A. British folk tunes are from China.
B. Different cultures share common human joys.
C. Bai culture is better than British culture.
D. Cultural misunderstandings are easy to solve.
6. What is more important in cultural exchange according to Yiran
A. The popularity of traditional handicrafts.
B. Face-lo-face communication skills.
C. The willingness of people to connect.
D. The support from universities and communities.
7. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To share Yiran Duan’s experience in cultural exchange.
B. To introduce a traditional Chinese tie-dye technique.
C. To describe the challenges of running a handicraft studio.
D. To compare Chinese and British folk cultures.

Language: More Than Just a Tool for Communication
Language does more than help us talk to each other. A new study shows that it also plays a key role in how our brain stores information from our senses.
Published in PLOS Biology by researchers at Beijing Normal University, the findings show that our ability to remember details about everyday objects—like knowing bananas are typically yellow—relies on strong connections between the brain’s visual and language systems.
When we see an object or think about its color, the brain’s visual processing area (VOTC视觉处理区域) becomes active. However, language-related regions, such as the anterior temporal lobe (ATL前颞叶), also play a role. For example, dementia (痴呆) patients with ATL damage struggle to recall object colors, even if their sight remains normal. This suggests that language helps organize our sensory knowledge.
To test this connection, scientists studied 33 stroke (中风) patients and 35 healthy individuals. Participants were asked to match objects (e.g., bananas, apples) to their usual colors while researchers monitored their brain activity. Using scans, the team mapped communication pathways between language and visual regions.
Results showed that the stronger the connection between the language and seeing parts of the brain, the better people were at remembering object colors. This link also helped the VOTC work better. The results stayed the same even after considering how serious the strokes were or common vision problems.
The study highlights real-life impacts. For example, learning a new color name like “turquoise” helps your brain remember and recognize the color more easily. In contrast, damage to brain connections between language and sight might explain why some people forget basic links, such as grass being green. This research deepens our understanding of how deeply language and vision interact, shaping how our brain organizes information from our senses.
8. What is the focus of the new study
A. The influence of language on communication skills.
B. The connection between brain injuries and memory.
C. The challenges in the process of color recognition.
D. The role of language in storing sensory information.
9. What can we know from the example of dementia patients
A. Visual processing areas are not important for color memory.
B. Language-related brain regions help organize sensory knowledge.
C. Dementia patients have stronger VOTC activity.
D. Object color knowledge depends on normal eyesight.
10. The underlined word “monitored” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.
A. recorded B. studied C. controlled D. improved
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The importance of learning new color names.
B. The process of turning experiences into knowledge.
C. The real-life significance of the study’s findings.
D. The negative effects of brain connection damage.
D
Allison Okamura, a leading robotics researcher at Stanford University, is developing a new generation of helper robots to solve global caregiving challenges. As populations get older, birth rates go down, and people live longer because of better healthcare, many countries lack enough human caregivers. For example, Japan, with many elderly people and little immigration, has quickly used robot helpers. The U.S., however, is slower to accept this, even though the need is growing.
Traditional industrial robots, made for repeating the same factory tasks, are too unsafe for caregiving. Okamura’s team pioneers “soft robotics,” using flexible materials such as knitted fabrics to make machines that can safely work with people. For example, soft robot arms can gently lift someone from bed without hurting them. Also, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) help robots adapt to unpredictable home environments. New Al systems can tell when an elderly person has trouble standing up and thus change the way they help.
Okamura says there will be two types of home robots: single-task devices and multi-purpose humanoid (像人的) robots. Specialized robots (like machines that organize clothes) could be in homes in 5—10 years. These would be like today’s robot vacuums (真空吸尘器), but for personal needs. But general humanoid robots that can cook, clean, and keep people company will take over 20 years to develop because they are technically hard. “It’s like how self-driving cars took time,” Okamura says.
Socially, the impact of robot carers is debated. While they may reduce loneliness by enabling independent living, they could also lack the emotional warmth of human interaction. Okamura emphasizes, “Robots shouldn’t replace people but complement care systems. A balanced approach respects both practical needs and emotional well-being.”
“Care robots represent hope, not a perfect solution,” she concludes. “They offer tools to preserve dignity in aging while addressing a universal human challenge.”
12. What makes in-home robot carers in demand
A. The popularity of robots in popular culture.
B. The high expense of human caregivers.
C. Aging populations and a lack of caregivers.
D. Government policies promoting robotics.
13. What material is used to make soft robots safe
A. Flexible knitted fabrics. B. Strong metal parts.
C. Heavy plastic components. D. Advanced glass materials.
14. Why does Okamura mention self-driving cars in Paragraph 3
A. To illustrate the rapid development of robotics.
B. To show the technical challenges of humanoid robots.
C. To compare the costs of robots and self-driving cars.
D. To argue for faster government approval of robot carers.
15. Which is the best title for the passage
A. Helper Robots: Widely-used in Caregiving.
B. Soft Robotics: Safe for Helping People.
C. Caregiving Robots: Replacing Humans or Not.
D. Robot Carers: Solving Global Caring Challenges.

How to eat and drink fewer microplastics
Microplastics are everywhere. They’re in your liver, blood and even in your brain, and they’re almost impossible to avoid. ____16____ Here are four ways to reduce your exposure in what you eat and drink.
____17____
Drinking bottled water could be introducing you to thousands of microscopic pieces of plastic. In fact, bottled water is the biggest pathway to microplastic exposure. Researchers have found that an average liter of bottled water contains about 240,000 plastic particles (微粒). Switching from bottled water to filtered tap water has the potential to reduce microplastic intake.
Avoid plastic food containers.
Using plastic is often unavoidable, but there are many ways to reduce your food’s interaction with plastics, and that includes the plastic storage containers, said experts. ____18____ That could be as simple as buying butter in a glass container.
Use glass in heated conditions.
One study found that microwaving food in plastic containers and reusable food bags could release more than 4 million microplastic particles per cm in just three minutes. Heat causes microplastics to get into your food, so avoid putting hot food into plastic packaging. ____19____
Avoid highly processed foods.
____20____ One study found microplastics in all 16 protein products that researchers sampled. Of the products tested, breaded shrimp had the highest concentrations of plastic particles. Highly processed chicken nuggets contained 30 times as many microplastics per gram as chicken breasts.
A. Choose to drink clean tap water.
B. Avoid plastic shopping bags.
C Highly processed foods contain lots of microplastics.
D. Wash fruits and vegetables with warm water before eating.
E. Fortunately, some steps can be taken to reduce your exposure.

My best day ever began when I decided to take a trip to explore the world alone. Leaving my home and family, I set out to discover new cultures and ways of life.
The moment that made this journey so meaningful for me was when I visited an orphanage (孤儿院) for children with disabilities. Seeing the courage and strength these kids had and the determination they displayed in their daily lives was truly inspiring. This experience changed my view on life forever.
My visit to the orphanage happened by chance when I wandered into a small village during my travels. A kind local woman noticed me looking lost and invited me to join her for a meal. Over plates of fragrant rice and fresh vegetables, she shared the story of the orphanage, located just a short walk from her home. Her eyes shone with pride as she spoke of the children. I felt a tug at my heart and asked if I could visit the place.
The next morning, she led me to the orphanage, a modest building with colorful walls painted by the children themselves. As soon as I entered, I was greeted with laughter and a deep sense of warmth. A young boy named Ravi rolled up to me in his wheelchair, his face beaming with a smile. “Welcome! ” he said with infectious enthusiasm, holding out a hand for a handshake. At that moment, I realized I wasn’t just a visitor. I was stepping into a world full of extraordinary strength and beauty.
I spent the day learning about their lives. Each child had a story that could break your heart and mend (修复) it in the same breath. There was Meena, who had lost her parents in a flood but now created amazing art with just her toes. And Ajay, who was born with cerebral palsy (脑性麻痹), was the most talented chess player I had ever met. These children faced challenges I could hardly imagine, yet their spirit remained unbroken. They radiated a kind of joy that didn’t depend on circumstances but came from a deep well of gratitude for life itself.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I participated in our school's Career Experience Day, trying my hand at being a teacher. I prepared lessons, taught in front of the class, and even graded assignments. It was both exciting and challenging. I felt a great sense of achievement seeing the students learn, but I also realized the patience and dedication required for this profession. This experience has deepened my respect for educators and sparked my interest in pursuing a career in education.
Yours,
Li Hua

Now, whenever I face challenges, I think of Ravi, Meena, and Ajay, who remind me that no matter what life throws at me, I can choose to rise above it.
