A new study suggests that dark markings on the planet Mars represent sand — not water. The research in 2015 suggested that lines on some Martian hills were evidence of water. Yet American scientists now say these lines appear more like dry, flows of sand. If water is present, it is likely to be a small amount. Water in liquid form would be necessary for microbial (微生物的) life.
NASA, the American space agency, said more research is needed. Michael Meyer is the lead scientist for NASA’s Mars exploration programme. He noted that the latest study does not reject the presence of water. But he admitted, “It just may not be as exciting as the idea of rivers going down the sides of cliffs (悬崖).”
The new findings come from a team led by Colin Dundas of the United States Geological Survey. His team measured 151 of these lines in 10 areas. Most of the lines end with slopes between 28 degrees and 35 degrees. These measurements are similar to active sand dunes (沙丘) on both Mars and Earth. A small covering of dust that moves and sometimes becomes lighter might help explain the markings. They usually appear in the Martian summertime, and then disappear until the next year. If these lines are dry. this suggests that recent Mars has not had large volumes of liquid water. Dundas and his research team say that many questions remain.
“I still think that Mars has a great potential for having had life early on in its history,” Meyer said. “As long as that’s true, we also have a reasonable possibility of life still being on Mars. It just happens to be cryptic or well hidden.”
NASA currently has no robotic vehicle — either on Mars or in development — with the ability to climb steep slopes. The lack of such equipment has engineers coming up with ideas like Mar-tian helicopters or planes without pilots.

With AI playing a growing role, Dr. Google is often on call for worried patients. Information from the right websites can teach patients about symptoms(症状) and prepare them for a doctor’s visit. But a poorly done search might cause anxiety before someone reaches the waiting room. Knowing where the information is from and avoiding identifying your health issue by yourself with Google AI are important.
When doing a search, don’t click the first link without hesitation. Some companies pay to have their websites listed at the top of a results page. Surf the internet for results that come from sites you can trust for medical information, which can include big health systems like the Mayo Clinic or sites run by government agencies. “We’ve gotten so used to clicking on that first link,” says John Grohol, a psychologist specializing in online behavior. “For your health information, you’d better be careful.”
According to Dr. Eric Boose, how you raise a question plays a big role in the results you desire. They suggest patients should seek for information based on symptoms, but not an expected way to treat. “You’d better ask proper questions in the first place,” added Dr. Eric Boose. “For example, when finding blood in your urine(尿), you should ask, ‘What could cause blood in my urine ’ instead of ‘Does the blood in my urine mean cancer ’” Blood in one’s urine could suggest cancer, but it might be given rise to by kidney(肾) stones or an infection(感染) of unknown causes. Visiting a doctor familiar with your medical history may be the best solution in this situation.
“Similar symptoms may appear in minor conditions as well as major ones,” explained Dr. Sarah Sams, “So focusing on a result means missing other explanations, especially if you just click the first few links listed on the website.” For some issues, give up the search altogether. If you are experiencing chest pains, dizziness or showing signs of a stroke, seek help immediately.
28.What do patients tend to do nowadays
A.Treat diseases themselves.
B.Choose to call Dr Google regularly.
C.Turn to AI for medical information.
D.Seek for doctors’ advice immediately.
29.What can we infer from paragraph 2
A.Mayo Clinic can be reliable.
B.The first link is certainly trustworthy.
C.Websites protect users’ health information.
D.Government sites provide more information.
30.Which question is considered proper when you ask AI for medical help
A.What can bring about cough
B.Are the spots on the skin cancer
C.May high fever be caused by an infection
D.What may be the best solution to headache
31.What is the main idea of the the text
A.AI can provide exact medical information.
B.AI performs better than traditional doctors.
C.Using AI for medical help should be careful.
D.Dr Google will replace traditional doctors gradually.

A new study finds that house cats can tell the difference between the smell of their owner and the smell of a stranger.
The study was done by Tokyo University of Agriculture. In the study, 30 cats were shown three plastic tubes (管子). One tube had the smell of their owner, one had the smell of a stranger, and the last one had no smell. The smells were taken from under the arm, behind the ear, and between the toes (脚趾头) of the people.
The researchers found that cats spent more time smelling the tube with the stranger’s smell than the one with their owner’s smell or the one with no smell. This means that cats can know whether a person is familiar or not just by their smell. Cats are known to have a strong sense of smell. They use it to talk with other cats. But this study finds that they may also use smell to demarcate people.
Other studies in the past have found that cats can also know people by their voice. They can even change their behaviour when they sense that someone is happy or angry. However, the researchers are not sure if cats can know exactly who a person is by their smell. To answer that question, more studies are needed.
One researcher, Hidehiko Uchiyama, said they need to show cats the smells of many people they know, and look for special behaviours when the cats smell their owner’s smell. Another expert, Serenella d’Ingeo, said that we don’t know how the cats felt when smelling the different tubes-whether they were relaxed or nervous. The researchers also saw that after smelling the tubes, cats sometimes brushed their faces against them. This is a way cats mark things with their own smell, which might mean sniffing (嗅) is part of exploring.
In the end, the study finds that cats use their nose to know if a person is someone they know or not.
32.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study
A.Its results. B.Its effect. C.Its progress. D.Its procedures.
33.What does the underlined word “demarcate” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Give in to. B.Tell apart. C.Look forward to. D.Check out.
34.What is the researchers’ attitude to cats’ recognising specific people by smell
A.Uncertain. B.Confident. C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Smell’s Role in Cat Socialising
B.Cats Like Strange Smells More
C.Cats Can Use Smell to Know Humans
D.Cats’ Unique Ability to Recognise Voices

Holidays are a time to come together and make memories. 36
“Screens can be a barrier to true connection during the holidays,” says Hansa Bhargava, MD, an Atlanta-based pediatrician and spokesperson for the Center for Excellence in Media and Mental Health at the American Academy of Pediatrics.
To help families stay in the present this holiday season, Bhargava shared her top four tips for setting healthier boundaries for screen use.
● Start with a family conversation. 37 She suggested discussing the importance of spending time together without screens. A simple conversation about why this matters can set the tone for the season.
● Agree on rules and results. Set clear expectations around when and where phone s should be put away, such as during meals, family walks, or gift-opening. 38 Establishing these rules before the holidays can make it easier to enforce them later.
● Tailor guidelines by age. Younger children may need stricter boundaries, like handing over their devices during specific times. 39 Making them part of the decision-making process helps prevent power struggles.
● 40 Replace screen time with planned activities like movie nights, baking cookies, or playing board games. One recent study found that preteens who unplug for even a few days improve their ability to read emotional cues by over 30%. Keeping everyone engaged helps make screens less tempting.
A.Be a role model.
B.Plan interesting family activities.
C.Children often mirror their parents’ behavior.
D.For teenagers, expect some negotiation (协商).
E.Agree on results ahead of time so there are no surprises.
F.But too often, phones take over and steal the moments that matter most.

Another wildly bright lightning along with a thunder cracked in the sky! Mary swiftly threw herself into her Mum’s arms, burying her face into her chest and trembling with fright. “I think we should leave here right away!” She murmured in a crying tone. Instantly, Dad refused her request again for the fact that the city had already been flooded severely. As he saw through their window, the almost three-meter-high floodwater had already surrounded the apartment building like a wide river, several cars floating on it just like boats.
“Black out!” Mary gasped fearfully, the wind roaring and the rain beating on the roof and windows, which made her even more nervous in the whole darkness. Mum took Mary’s hand and carefully led her to sit on the sofa, trying her best to comfort her. While she performed calmly, Mary could tell she was nervous too. “Let’s try to find a light source first and then see what other supplies we have.” Dad made an arrangement. Luckily, there was a flashlight, some packages of instant noodles, bread and some drinking water, which may help them get through the toughness for the half of the night. Without saying a single word, Dad turned on the flashlight, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. Only the light of the flashlight could now give them some warmth and a sense of little hope.
“What about Mrs. Thomson Old and weak, she must be extremely helpless.” Mum said with great concern when she thought about their nice neighbor who lived alone upstairs of the same building. After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should go and check whether Mrs. Thomson was fire. Mary, with heavy breath and pounding heart, stood up immediately, ready to bring all their supplies to Mrs. Thomson’s house.注意:

The water had already seeped into the stairwell, making each step slippery and dangerous. Mary clung tightly to her parents’hands, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. When they finally reached Mrs. Thomson’s door, Dad knocked gently but firmly. After what felt like an eternity, the door creaked open, revealing Mrs. Thomson’s frightened face. “Thank goodness you’re here!” she whispered, her voice trembling. They quickly helped her gather her essential belongings and led her back downstairs to their apartment, where they all huddled together, finding comfort in each other's presence.
Suddenly, a bunch of searching light from a rescue boat flashed across Mrs. Thomson’s window. “Look!” Mary exclaimed, pointing excitedly. Dad grabbed the flashlight and waved it back and forth, signaling for help. Within minutes, they heard the sound of voices and the gentle lapping of the boat against the building. The rescue team arrived just in time, helping them all into the boat and to safety. As they sailed away from the flooded apartment, Mary looked back, feeling grateful for the bravery and love that had kept them together through the storm.

Good afternoon, everyone! Currently, many of us have poor English handwriting, with messy strokes and irregular letter shapes, which not only affects the neatness of our homework and exams but also leaves a bad impression on teachers.
To improve our English handwriting, I suggest we start from the following aspects. First of all, we need to develop a correct writing posture and grip the pen properly, which is the foundation of good handwriting. Secondly, we should practice regularly. We can start with simple letters and words, and then gradually move on to sentences and paragraphs. Moreover, we should pay attention to the details in writing, such as the slant, spacing and size of letters.
In conclusion, improving English handwriting requires our persistence and patience. Let's take action right now.

How to Improve English Handwriting
Dear teachers and fellow students.
It's my great honor to deliver a speech here. Nowadays, many students have poor English handwriting and ignore the importance of English handwriting, leading to messy and unrecognizable work. This not only affects communication but also leaves a poor impression in exams.
To address this issue, here are my suggestions. First, practice basic letter forms daily. Spend 10 minutes tracing standard alphabets to build muscle memory. Second, slow down when writing. Rushing often results in uneven strokes, so focus on consistency. Additionally, observing and imitating beautiful handwriting samples can inspire improvement. Remember, neat handwriting reflects discipline and boosts confidence in exams.
Let's take action now! With patience and persistence, we can all achieve clear and elegant English handwriting.
Thank you!
