In 1984, Carter became a member of Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization focusing on building affordable homes.
Founded in 1976, Habitat had built 342 homes by 1980. After the Carters joined, that number climbed rapidly, reaching 10,000 by 1991. By 2023, the organization had built or repaired more than 45,000 homes. Now, it has branches in all 50 U. S. states and works in more than 70 countries.
Carter’s connection with Habitat began with a visit to one of its work sites in New York City, where volunteers were repairing an old building. Struck by the challenging task, he joked that he would have to return to lend his carpentry (木工的) skills. Soon after, Carter organized a group of volunteers and returned to the site. He and his wife, Rosalynn, worked alongside other volunteers during the day and shared dormitories with them at night.
Over the course of more than 35 years, the Carters worked with over 104,000 volunteers in 14 countries to build and repair nearly 4,400 homes. They also raised funds for Habitat, connected its leaders with global officials, and helped promote its mission round the world. Known for his discipline, Carter was a demanding taskmaster. He expected volunteers to arrive on time to ensure focus on the task at hand. Typically on the Tuesday night of the workweek, Carter would visit each home construction site to see if the projects were on schedule. If they weren’t, he would call on additional volunteers to keep progress on track.
In 2019, at age 95, Carter took part in his final Habitat project in Nashville. He had fallen at home the day before and showed up at the work site with a bandage on his forehead. Despite this, he still assembled (组装) and painted wooden pieces for multiple homes. For many Americans, Carter was the face of Habitat for Humanity, as he truly put his muscle where his mouth was.
4. What can we learn about Habitat for Humanity from the first two paragraphs
A. It aims to improve the standard of living.
B. It develops rapidly around the world.

In Vancouver, Canada, doctors have cured a patient of blindness — by putting his tooth into his eye. The “tooth-in-eye” operation was performed in late February, making it Canada’s first, reported The New York Post.
Officially called osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis (OOKP,骨齿人工角膜手术), the technique was inaugurated by Dr. Benedetto in 1963 in Italy, according to ScienceDirect. From then until the most recent Canadian case, OOKP had been performed in only nine more countries, including the UK. Although the success rate is high and the effect even lasted 27 years for most patients in Italy, the procedure remains rare.
OOKP was designed to avoid immune rejection (免疫排斥), a major issue in traditional transplantation between different people, which happens when the patient’s immune system identifies the new organ or tissue as something foreign, attacks it and eventually destroys it. That’s why some medicines are used to help control the reaction, which weakens the entire immune system. The “tooth-in-eye” technique doesn’t have this problem, as it mainly uses the patient’s own body materials.
The Canadian doctors first took out one of the patient’s teeth. They shaped it, drilled a hole at its center and put a tiny plastic lens (透镜) in. The doctors then implanted the tooth into one of the patient’s cheeks, where it stayed for several weeks. During that time, the doctors took some healthy tissues from the patient’s other cheek to replace the bad tissues in his eye. Finally, the tooth was taken out and placed into the eye, allowing the patient’s sight to recover.
At the moment, the operation can only be used for blindness caused by damage to the cornea, the clear outer part of the eye. “Hopefully, this will break some ground, making more people in need receive the treatment.” said the leading doctor Greg Moloney.
8. What does the underlined word “inaugurated” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Launched. B. Reported. C. Needed. D. Ended.
9. What’s the advantage of OOKP
A. It can prevent immune rejection.
B. It can strengthen the immune system.
C. It identifies the foreign organ or tissue.
D. It requires medicines to control reactions.
10. Paragraph 4 is mainly about the tooth-in-eye operation’s ________.
A. challenge B. process C. benefit D. risk
11. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A textbook. B. A novel. C. A brochure. D. A newspaper.
D
A special project is underway to fix and repair the ancient murals (壁画) of the Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves in Xinjiang, China. The project aims to use advanced technologies like AI, to address the long-standing challenges of preserving these invaluable cultural relics.
The Kizil caves, dating back to the late 3rd century, are among China’s earliest and largest Buddhist cave complexes. The murals show the life of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, and are a vivid record of the ancient Silk Road and cultural diversity. However, many murals have been damaged or lost due to varieties of natural factors and human activities.
In order to address these problems, the project applies a mix of advanced technologies. A team from Zhejiang University is going to apply terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (光谱技术) to discover and identify the color layers of the smoke-damaged murals in Cave 161 in a non-invasive way, which will allow for virtual repair. Meanwhile, a digital team will use AI models and thought-chain strategies to repair the damaged murals in Cave 38. The project is expected to complete in late May.
Zhao Li, a research fellow who has spent over 30 years on mural preservation, stressed the challenges of identifying and digitally repairing smoke-covered murals and accurately recognizing and completing missing sections using AI. He also noted that while Al models good at recognizing geometric patterns and architectural design, they still require further training to accurately identify curved lines and human figures in the murals. However, the newly developed DeepSeek model, with its improved capabilities, offers hope for more exact and efficient reconstruction.
This reconstruction project is just one example of how technology, especially AI, is changing archaeology. Around the world, archaeologists are using AI to unlock the secrets of the past. In China, students are now taking courses like “AI Archaeology”, where they learn to use AI to identify mold on paper relics or determine the age of bronze relics. The future is bright.
12. What’s the purpose of the project
A. To build new cultural heritage sites.
B. To promote tourism in Xinjiang.
C. To protect the ancient murals.
D. To train more AI experts.
13. What can be inferred about the project from paragraph 3
A. It will address all problems.
B. It has already achieved its goals.
C. It is expected to last for several years.
D It applies different high-end technologies.
14. How does Zhao Li feel about using DeepSeek model in the project
A. Concerned. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Positive.
15. Why does the author mention students in China in the last paragraph
A. To give an example. B. To explain a rule.
C. To make a suggestion. D. To present an argument.
