Yi Houzhang is 77 years old this year. Since 1985, he has kept doing just one thing—planting trees day after day.
In 1985, to make his dream of greening the mountain near his home come true, Yi sold one cow and three pigs to buy young trees. His seven family members all worked with him, including his mother. It was difficult to plant these trees, and it was even more challenging to water them. They had to use a shoulder pole (扁担) to carry water up to the mountain.
After ten years of hard work, he planted over 130 hectares (公倾) of trees, but a wildfire in 1996 burned most of his trees, and only about 20 hectares of the trees remained alive. Yi quickly restarted his work with his family. For months, they lived on the mountains so that they would have more time to plant trees.
The fire taught Yi a lesson. He visited many places to learn about fire control. Later he changed the kinds of trees and built fire paths. Now, the mountain is covered with trees, and Yi has a tea garden which spreads over almost 5 hectares. He can make about 50,000 yuan a year from the garden.
