Ruiz predicts the weather for her community.
In 2020, a tornado hit Ruiz’s hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee — and, even closer to home, her house. So she said she knew what a lifesaving job this could be.
However, her job isn’t without difficulties. “Hearing people have been injured, like in a big hurricane, is really hard,” she said. “We try our best to predict the weather as best as we can, and we are getting better. But it can always change.”
Ruiz talked about the new and changing weather patterns. She said, “We are absolutely seeing changes in weather, with more intense and more frequent storms, which relate to climate change.” Weather is changing everywhere, as the planet warms. There are more frequent droughts, stronger storms, and increasing temperature changes. This makes predicting the weather difficult.
Ruiz always knew she was interested in weather and how it affected the world. But her path to a career in meteorology wasn’t easy. She said, “I struggled so hard with math and wanted to give up. But I kept pushing and working hard, and now I’m the first woman chief meteorologist in the Baton Rouge TV market. I’m proud of that.” She wants kids to know they should never give up on their education or their dreams.

People who have trouble walking often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It’s called Seatrac.
Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (轻便梯) that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can also help anyone else who has a hard time walking, including older people and pregnant women.
Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. The idea for it came when one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn’t like having to be carried into the ocean as if he were a sack (袋) of potatoes.
Mr. Fotiou realized that there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr. Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. In time, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell it.
The company worked hard to make the system simple to put in place and easy to run. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar-powered. It doesn’t require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when the swimming season ends.
This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Latvia. TOBEA hopes to offer Seatrac in other countries soon.
The Seatrac service in Greece is being offered for free. The Greek government has helped pay for it, with local cities buying and managing the equipment. Greece’s government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.
8. Who is Seatrac designed for
A. Older people who move freely.
B. Youths who like to swim in the sea.
C. Women who enjoy beach baths with their children.
D. People who have trouble moving around on the beach.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The system. B. Potato. C. Ramp. D. Normal wheelchair.
10. What can we learn about the Seatrac system
A. It’s not easy to operate.
B. Users don’t have to worry about charging it.
C. People need to have a big cost to use it in Greece.
D. It has been available at more than one thousand beaches.
11. Why does the Greek government help pay for the Seatrac service
A. To improve the government’s image.
B. To promote the development of tourism.
C. To set up an organization for the disabled.
D. To support small and medium-sized local companies.
D
In late June, the US government agreed to allow two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, to sell chicken meat that has been grown in a laboratory. That makes the US the second country to approve lab-grown chicken.
Unlike normal chicken meat, lab-grown meat isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Instead, it’s a meat product developed from animal cells that are grown in a lab. So it is also called “cell-based” or “cultured” meat.
The process of creating lab-grown meat is completely different from the normal meat-raising process. The first cells come from live animals. The cells are grown inside large steel tanks, where they’re fed with everything they need to grow. In a few weeks, the cells grow to look like normal meat. The companies then form this meat into more familiar shapes.
The companies say that their meat is better for the environment than meat from animals.
Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. It also creates a lot of pollution. Raising animals for food creates about 15% of the world’s greenhouse gases. That’s why cutting back on eating meat is one of the easiest ways to fight climate change. Lab-grown meat can also help out in other ways. Raising animals for food is extremely hard on animals. They are often kept in small spaces and are treated badly.
Polls (民意调查) have shown that many people aren’t too interested in lab-grown meat. Lots of people believe that it just sounds weird. But Amy Chen, who works for Upside Foods, says that once people try the meat, “The most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’”
But right now, the meat is far more expensive than meat from animals. Even though the companies have been approved, they have the huge challenge of figuring out how to make much more meat far more cheaply.
12. What can we know about lab-grown chicken meat
A. It is created from animal cells in a laboratory.
B. It is cheaper than the normal meat.
C. America is the first country to approve selling it.
D. Two companies are allowed to do research on it.
13. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The necessity of eating normal meat.
B. The process of creating lab-grown meat.
C. The disadvantages of raising animals for food.
D. The similarities between lab-grown meat and normal meat.
14. What does the underlined word “weird” in paragraph 6 mean
A. Easy. B. Ordinary. C. Strange. D. Attractive.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Lab-grown Meat Is Outdated
B. What Exactly Is Lab-grown Meat
C. How Is the Lab-grown Chicken Made
D. Lab-grown Chicken Meat Is Coming

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a senior and team captain as a middle linebacker. We were a good football team with a 12-1 record so far in the season. In November, we traveled to meet our cross-state competitors, which were a strong team. If we won this game, we would play in the State Championship game in December.
Playing in the championship game in Birmingham was something my dad did as a senior in high school. To make it that far was a dream of mine. I wanted to do something my dad had done, even better.
That November night, the stadium was filled with one hundred or so faithful fans that followed us to the battle. My parents sat closest to the field.
The game started. It was a fight to the finish with both teams leaving everything they had on the field. However, with under a minute left in the game, our team made a mistake that caused us to lose the game. I knew where my parents sat and hid my face from their seats. I could hear the disappointment in the sighs(叹息)of the crowd. Worse still, I couldn’t bear the thought of what my dad was thinking.
The clock struck zero, signaling that our chances of making it to the finals were over. We were disappointed. Not enough energy to cry. I remained silent. I didn’t want to speak to anyone, especially my dad.
I feared how the conversation would go. I didn’t want to hear “Good game” because I knew it wasn’t true. I didn’t want to hear “You’ll get them next time” because there was not going to be a “next time”. I didn’t want to hear “You should’ve done it in this or that way”. I wasn’t ready to face the reality of falling short in my father’s footsteps. In fact, I’d been trying so hard to make my dad proud of me, even though he didn’t ask me to do so.
I walked alone across the field to the clubhouse. I looked up into the stands where my parents once sat. Empty. Every seat was empty.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, a familiar sound from a whistle(哨子)fell on my ears.

I participated in the poetry recitation contest organized by the school. I arrived early, nervous and excited to wait for the start of the competition. When it was my turn, my heart heat really fast. I took a deep breath and began to recite the carefully prepared poem loudly. The audience were deeply attracted by my performance and burst into warm applause from time to time.
At that moment, I felt a sense of joy and accomplishment that I had never had before. This experience has given one a deeper understanding and appreciation of poetry.
Yours,
Li Hua

I stepped forward and hugged him tightly. In that moment, I understood that no matter how many dreams I might miss, as long as I had my dad's love and support, I could face any failure bravely.
